Florence to turn sludge to dollars -- Black Friday deals include LC Waste Transfer -- What to do with leftovers.

Sewage waste? Or black gold?

Florence’s Waste Water Treatment plant produces an end product right now that has to be trucked to the Willamette Valley and dumped in the Short Mountain Landfill. Depending on demand, it can be as many as six to eight large truckloads each month, and it can add up to an expense of about $80-thousand a year. But, the city is in the midst of a pilot project that could turn that sewage sludge into a marketable product that can be used on lawns and flower gardens.
210 – “Basically a demonstration project to take the bio-solids and mix it with chipped yard debris and compost it basically to get it to a class A material.”

Florence public works director Mike Miller says several Oregon communities already have similar projects. The local effort is based on one in Josephine County.
211 – Josephine County has a product they call Jo-Grow. They compost it and they sell it to a pretty big customer base. They go through it, you know, quite a bit. I mean they don’t usually have any on hand.”

If it works out, and so far, miller says it appears to be, then the city will consider purchasing the equipment that is currently on loan. That could cost about $3.5-million but Miller says the payback would be quick.

You may not have thought of your nearest waste transfer site as a shopping stop on this Black Friday, but it could be. Lane County Waste Transfer Sites are offering reusable shopping bags, made from recyclable materials, for only three dollars… Plus, according to Waste Reduction Specialist Sarah Grimm, for every bag you buy, Lane County will throw in two additional reusable produce bags. On top of all that says Grimm… all proceeds from the bag sales will be donated to Food For Lane County. Grimm says all 16 waste transfer sites, including ones in Florence, Mapleton, Walton and Swisshome are participating.

If you’re like many Americans you have plenty of left over turkey today… Local restaurateur Cindy Wobbe says there’s a lot of potential there.
215 – “The first thing I do after that turkey dinner is I put that turkey carcass in a pot and I start to boil it with vegetables and stuff and it simmers for a good five or six hours. I freeze that.”

That stock can be the base of many good soups or sauces. As for the leftovers themselves…
216 – “I use those in casseroles, like, I’ll do instead of a chicken enchilada I’ll do a turkey enchilada. You know, any of those things… a taco that I might put shredded beef in, I’ll do turkey. Turkey has no cholesterol. It’s the healthiest meat.”

It may take a little bit of extra effort now, but in the end it’ll pay off in healthy, economical home cooked meals.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - C. Norman Winningstad, a computer
entrepreneur and philanthropist considered to be Oregon's
"grandfather of technology," has died of a self-inflicted gunshot
wound at his Newport home. He was 85. Police say Winningstad, who
had been ill, died Wednesday. Gov. Ted Kulongoski says
Winningstad's "contributions and legacy will be realized for
generations."

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Eugene police are searching for a suspect in
the robbery of a coffee kiosk that ended with the death of his
alleged accomplice. Authorities say the pair tried to rob the Dutch
Bros. Coffee drive-through Wednesday night, when Sirus Combs got
into a struggle with the shop's employee. Police say the employee
shot Combs, who died at the scene. The other suspect fled.

MONMOUTH, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a 22-year-old
employee of an armored truck company was badly injured when the
truck he was in went off the road and rolled near Monmouth. The
Statesman Journal reports after the Wednesday morning crash, Joseph
Michael Pablo Jr., of Corvallis, was taken to a hospital where he
was in critical condition.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - After four years of trying, Medford
resident Vanessa Driskell has finally located her long-lost birth
certificate. Driskell was born on Clark Air Base in the Philippines
and the U.S. Air Force moved her birth certificate and other
documents stored at the base after Mount Pinatubo erupted there in
1991. The certificate was ultimately found in an Illinois
warehouse.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A new view of Mount Hood National Forest is
now available and it can be carried in your pocket - on a U.S.
quarter released this month.
The Oregon State Treasurer's office said the newly minted coin
went into circulation as part of the "America the Beautiful"
series by the U.S. Mint.
The quarter shows Mount Hood from the east, with Lost Lake in
the foreground. The national forest covers just over 1 million
acres and includes the mountain.
State Treasurer Ted Wheeler said the coin is a complement to the
image of Crater Lake on the Oregon quarter issued in 2005.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Police didn't have to go far to find a bank
robbery suspect in Oregon.
They say 23-year-old Nathan Alan Bramlage was spotted after
walking into the Eugene police station Wednesday to use a public
phone in the lobby.
The Register-Guard reports an officer recognized the man from
surveillance video of the bank robbery the day before. Detectives
followed and arrested him about two blocks away.
Detective Ralph Burks says Bramlage apparently assumed police
wouldn't recognize him.
Bramlage was booked into Lane County Jail on a robbery charge
and told police he had used the phone to call his parents.
