Domestic Violence needs increase while donations drop

More women and children than ever before are being served by domestic violence programs in Oregon. That’s what according to a recent national survey that showed on one particular day almost 600 Oregonians were in emergency shelters or transitional housing. At the same time, another 700 received other types of services. But, says Kerry Naughton with the Partnership for Safety and Justice, the most sobering statistic may be the 277 people that did not get the help they asked for that day because there wasn’t enough staff or money.
210 -- “45 percent of the programs in Oregon reported that they don’t have enough funding, and unfortunately, because of this funding shortage, women and children who are trying to flee abuse are often forced to return to, or remain in, dangerous situations, or they face homelessness.”

Naughton says domestic violence program directors also reported shortages of basics like diapers and baby food. Her group’s web site has a statewide list of shelters’ needs for those who want to donate… that’s safety and justice dot org.

Oregon’s Rose Bowl Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli will be in a Lane County Courtroom this afternoon to hear formal burglary charges in connection with a theft at a campus fraternity in late January. The Lane County D-A’s office says Masoli and former Oregon receiver Garrett Embry have each been charged with one count of burglary for allegedly stealing two laptop computers and a guitar from a campus fraternity. Running back LaMichael James was in the same courtroom this morning where he was expected to enter a plea other than not guilty in an unrelated domestic violence case. Ducks’ football coach Chip Kelley issued a statement last night saying he would not comment on either situation until tomorrow.

Daylight Savings time begins overnight Saturday night and fire officials says it’s a good time to check the battery. Despite an 11-year old law requiring most battery powered smoke detectors use 10-year lithium batteries, there are still a large number of alarms that use the 9-volt or other type of power supply. Siuslaw Valley Fire Marshall Sean Barrett recommends monthly testing of the alarms themselves and battery replacement with the start of Daylight Savings Time.

You too can be a guitar hero. Seacoast Entertainment Association, formerly known as Florence Performing Arts, will present the California Guitar Trio in concert this Friday evening at the Florence Events Center. At 3:30 tomorrow they’ll also offer a free 90-minute “Master Class” for intermediate level guitar players. Organizers says space is limited. Individual tickets to the seven pm performance are $20 and are still available at the FEC box office.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A judge has dismissed a deliberate homicide
charge filed last June against an Oregon man for the shooting death
of his wife during an October 1990 hunting trip in southern
Montana. Retired Montana Supreme Court Justice John Warner found
Cary Greenlee of Bend, Ore., could not get a fair trial because
evidence he might use in his defense had been lost. Warner also
said the state reopened its investigation "for no good reason."
Greenlee is a former Montana minister.

STEVENSON, Wash. (AP) - A multi-day search for a Portland hiker
missing near Bonneville Dam in Washington state has been suspended.
Skamania County (Wash.) Undersheriff Dave Cox says Cox made the
announcement yesterday afternoon after about 45 ground searchers,
two dog teams, two horse teams and a Coast Guard helicopter
searched through another day for 24-year-old Kathrine Huether
(HEET'-er). She was last heard from last Thursday when she sent a
text message to a friend.

ETHEL, Wash. (AP) - Two Eugene, Ore., dog owners who earlier
this week used the assistance of two volunteer pilots to search
part of Washington's Lewis County for two missing Pharaoh Hounds
have recovered both animals. Owners Cynthia Guinn and Bill Martin
were staying with friends in Ethel, Wash., last weekend while they
attended a lure coursing event in Auburn. Martin says he let his
four dogs out in the yard to run around Sunday morning, but the
animals got away before the dog event.

FLORENCE, Ore. (AP) - For the third year in a row, truffle
thieves have trespassed on Roy Marshall's carefully managed
woodland along the Siuslaw River, exposing tree roots with their
rakes and scattering trash. They're not hunting for chocolate, but
for the gourmet fungus that grows a few inches below the surface.
Those truffles are worth $80 to $100 a pound wholesale.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The University of Oregon has moved a student
group that has drawn protests for inviting speakers with views
considered racist or anti-Semitic. The Register-Guard reports the
Pacifica Forum was moved off campus to the Baker Center in downtown
Eugene. Forum members say the move should prevent their meetings
from being canceled.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A state report says the number of young
children with developmental delays has risen in Oregon. The
Department of Education reported the number of special education
students increased by 260 children, or 6 percent since last year.
Nearly all the increase was reported in Multnomah County. Education
leaders told The Oregonian many preschoolers in need of help were
missed in the past.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Zookeepers at Oregon Zoo are donating
$56,000 to install several "sway poles" in the new Red Ape
Reserve exhibit. The poles will mimic the movement of small trees
that orangutans and gibbons would use to navigate through a forest
in the wild.

SEATTLE (AP) - Les Schwab Tire Centers has paid $2 million to
settle a hiring discrimination suit. The U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission says the company failed to hire qualified
women for tire-changing jobs at stores throughout the West.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Medford police continue to investigate a
shooting that left a man bleeding on a sidewalk with bullet wounds
to his torso. A suspect was arrested 90 minutes after yesterday's
shooting.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon State University wrestler who
failed to follow a diversion program after pleading guilty to
disorderly conduct has been sentenced to probation and community
service. The case began last May, when Michael Mangrum and a former
OSU wrestler were arrested after Mangrum sparked a fight by making
inflammatory comments toward bicyclists.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - Existing tenants of the Port of Astoria are
concerned about a proposal that would allow a company to use the
central waterfront to export logs to Asia. The operation would
shift the Port's business strategy back to shipping after more than
a decade of focus on fisheries, marine services and tourism.
Current tenants are worried about noise, dust and log truck
traffic.
