Fire District wins another grant; Planning Commission begins sign code revisions; volunteers feted; STEP ends winter steelhead season

Siuslaw Valley Fire nets second straight grant…

Local firefighters will be safer when they do their job according to Siuslaw Valley Fire Chief John Buchanan. His agency recently received news of their second consecutive Homeland Security Fire Grant. This year’s $368-thousand will be used to replace self contained breathing apparatus, along with a compressor to fill the air bottles and equipment to test them regularly. Also provided: funding for four thermal imaging devices. Those devices can literally ‘see’ differences in temperature and can aid in finding downed firefighters or occupants of a burning building. Additional ‘rapid intervention’ equipment for firefighter safety will be purchased. Last year the fire district won a grant for just under a million dollars to replace all emergency communication systems for fire and ambulance in Western Lane County. That brings the two year total received by the agency to about $1.3-million.

One volunteer will win $500 that will be donated to their charity of choice tomorrow afternoon. That’s one highlight of the annual Volunteer Celebration hosted by the Florence Area Coordinating Council. Several different agencies will honor their volunteers during a special reception from one to four pm at the Florence Events Center. Each participating agency has been asked to nominate their ‘volunteer of the year’. FACC will select one of those for the $500 award.

The Florence Planning Commission will get to work this evening on possible revisions to the sign code. Commissioners held a private joint session with the City Council two weeks ago to hear advice from the city’s attorney about the matter. Following the private session, the two bodies briefly talked about whether or not the sign code should be moved to the building regulations portion of the code as opposed to the zoning regulations. There are no other action items on their agenda, they meet at City Hall at seven P.M.

Helping to rebuild native salmon runs on tributaries of the Siuslaw River is one goal of the local Salmon Trout Enhancement Program… also known as STEP. The winter steelhead trapping and broodstock collection program on Green and Whittaker Creeks recently wrapped up with volunteers handling nearly three-thousand adult fish. Most were hatchery fish, but a few were native. Eggs were collected and raised to a certain point at the group’s facility on Munsel Creek, then transferred to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for rearing and eventual return to the wild.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Corrections Department says a
21-year-old inmate serving a life sentence for murder has been
found dead in his cell in the Eastern Oregon Correctional
Institution in Pendleton. Prisons spokeswoman Jeanine Hohn in Salem
said yesterday that Timothy Waddell was found unresponsive on
Sunday. The Oregonian reports Corrections officials and Oregon
State Police are investigating the manner of death.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The jury in a $29 million sex abuse
lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America has finished a second day
of deliberations without a verdict. Deliberations are scheduled to
resume at 9:00 this morning in Portland. The lawsuit claims the Boy
Scouts were negligent for failing to take steps to prevent child
sex abuse after keeping a secret list of suspected pedophiles for
decades. Jurors got the case on Friday.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Salem police have helped corral two wandering
toddlers and have taken action against two sets of parents. Neither
child was hurt although one wearing only a diaper was very cold. In
both cases, police say the parents had been using marijuana. Two
21-year-old parents of a 2-year-old boy were arrested for
investigation of criminal mistreatment. Two other parents were
cited for endangering the welfare of a minor.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police Commissioner Dan Saltzman
says a Portland police sergeant who unholstered his gun during an
off-duty road dispute with another motorist will be assigned to a
desk job. Saltzman said Monday he made the decision about Sgt. Kyle
Nice in consultation with Police Chief Rosie Sizer. The Oregonian
cites Detective Mary Wheat in reporting Nice has been on family
leave but is returning to work.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon secretary of state's office says
thousands of Oregon workers get away without paying state taxes
because revenue officials don't do enough to identify them. A new
audit found that Oregon missed at least 66,000 who should have
filed state tax returns in 2007 but did not, and that it cost the
state more than $100 million that year.

SANDY, Ore. (AP) - The latest in a series of mysterious tree
cuttings near a stretch of U.S. 26 southeast of Portland is the
first to involve injuries. Molly Rose Oregan haed just been to her

tree about 18 inches in diameter. Oregon State Police say her car
was totaled; she suffered minor injuries.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Conan O'Brien kicked off a nationwide tour
that evoked his late-night brand of edgy humor in Eugene last
night, bringing a college-town crowd to its feet. The former
"Tonight Show" host took swipes at former employer NBC -- and
himself -- in an evening of jokes, music and wild costume changes
that at one point had O'Brien in a pink leather outfit.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Trail Blazers beat the
Oklahoma City Thunder 103-95 last night without injured guard
Brandon Roy. Marcus Camby scored a season-high 30 points and pulled
down 13 rebounds. Roy said before the game that he had a torn
meniscus in his right knee that will also keep him out of
Portland's regular-season finale tomorrow night against Golden
State.
