Firefighters rescue man from cliff - Gubernatorial candidtates to square off - fire crews labor over weekend

Firefighters pluck man from precarious spot…

A specially trained rescue squad plucked a suicidal man from the side of a thousand foot cliff above the Pacific Ocean just south of Sea Lion Caves late Friday night. The 45-year old Elmira man, who police declined to identify, was reported missing and possibly suicidal by family members. His pickup was found by state troopers at an overlook on Highway 101 just after ten-pm Friday night, at about the same time that family members arrived. The man was spotted, hanging upside down in dense brush, about 75-feet below the roadway. He did not respond when called to. A crew from Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, specially trained in steep-angle rope rescue rappelled to the man and found he was alive. They were able to hoist him to medics above and he was transported to Peace Harbor Hospital. Firefighters and police said had the man’s fall not been stopped by the brush, he likely would have fallen to the ocean a thousand feet below.

Oregon governor candidates Chris Dudley and John Kitzhaber have agreed to a September 30 televised debate sponsored by KGW-TV and The Oregonian. The Oregonian reports that Republican Dudley's campaign sent Democrat Kitzhaber's campaign a letter Friday morning offering several dates for a televised debate. By Friday afternoon, Kitzhaber's campaign had agreed to September 30. Kitzhaber campaign director Patricia McCaig says it's in everyone's interest to hear from the two candidates. Dudley campaign spokeswoman Brittany Bramell says Dudley looks forward to sharing his plans for Oregon. The candidates also will share a stage September 25 in Eugene as part of a conference held by the League of Oregon Cities. However, they have been given those questions for that event in advance.

Fire crews started off Labor Day Weekend in Oregon battling three wildfires. The largest, according to federal agencies, ins about ten miles northwest of Selma in Southern Oregon. The Oak Flat Fire started three weeks ago and is raising a smoke column that can be seen from much of the Rogue and Illinois Valleys. In the Northern Willamette Valley, Mount Hood Forest officials say the Olallie Lake Scenic Area is closed south of the Camp Ten Campground as crews work the View Lake Complex of fires. And, in the central Cascades the Scott Mountain fire has led to the closure of portions of the Mount Washington Wilderness and nearby Willamette National Forest Lands.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Three months after Kyron Horman vanished
from his Portland school, his father remains optimistic. Kaine
Horman tells the Oregonian newspaper he has signed his son up for
soccer and bought a backpack and stuffed it with supplies in
anticipation that Kyron will attend the first day of third grade
Tuesday. Kaine Horman says the family is, "operating as if he will
be at school."

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - Oregon liquor dealers and lobbyists are
looking northward this fall to Washington state, where two
competing initiatives would privatize liquor sales. If either
passes, Oregon would be the last state on the West Coast where the
government holds a monopoly on hard liquor. An Associated Liquor
Stores of Oregon lobbyist tells the Eugene Register-Guard that
passage might give Oregon reason to re-examine its system.

PHILOMATH, Ore. (AP) - A Benton County man says a neighbor has
shot and killed a young cougar prowling around poultry pens. Reed
Glasmann told the Corvallis Gazette-Times the animal was on his
property when Shane Mooney shot it.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A Marion County Jail inmate has been charged
with second-degree manslaughter and witness tampering in the July
19 death of a fellow inmate. Robert D. Haws suffered fatal head
injuries during a July 13 fight in the recreation yard of the
jail's minimum-security cellblock.

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. (AP) - Police say the 16-year-old son of a
Vietnamese-American family moving into a home in the southeast
Portland suburb of Happy Valley is responsible for threatening
messages and racist graffiti. Happy Valley police say the teen was
unhappy about his family's move and the prospect of attending a new
high school. No criminal charges are planned.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Despite some rare August showers, Southern
Oregon rainfall was 13 percent below average to mark the fourth
straight year of below-average precipitation. The Mail Tribune
reports the region closed out its 2009 water year with rainfall
measuring just under 16 inches between Sept. 1, 2009 and Tuesday.

TAKING A LOOK INTO COAST RADIO SPORTS:

College Football:
Kenjon Barner (KEN-yonn) bobbled the opening kickoff, but that was his only miscue of the day as he found the end-zone five times in all… four on the ground and one via pass… in number 11 Oregon’s 72-nothing rout of New Mexico Saturday afternoon. Cliff Harris found the end-zone twice himself for the Ducks, returning two punts for touchdowns in the second half.

Oregon State couldn’t overcome several miscues against number six ranked TCU, falling in Arlington, Texas 30-21 to the Horned Frogs Saturday night. The Beavers led by seven twice in the game, but had difficulty overcoming Frogs’ quarterback Rob Dalton. He ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Oregon State was beginning what could have been a game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter when a miscommunication caused the center to snap the ball early to Ryan Katz. Rather than fall on it, Katz instead booted the ball out the back of the end zone for a safety.

Northwest League Baseball:
The Eugene Emeralds ended their 2010 campaign with a four game losing streak… the final three losses coming at Volcano Stadium against Salem-Keizer. Friday the Vols came out on top 2-1; Saturday it was one-nothing, then yesterday the season came to an end 9-4.
