School Board facing full load - Food share shelves empty - gas prices steady in Florence - OSU turning the ocean green

School may be out, but administrators still have work to do…

When the Siuslaw School District Board of Directors meet tonight, they’ll have plenty on their plate. Superintendent Jeff Davis says they’ll deal with curriculum, personnel and…
Davis – “We’ll be talking about facilities and we’ll be talking progress on the Elementary roof. It’s a huge project actually, so, we’re monitoring that.

The goal is to have the bulk of the work done by the time classes begin in September, although, says Davis, the rain has slowed progress. The board will also hear an update on a new program started this past year in the high school: Advanced Placement classes offering college credit to successful participants.
Davis – “Advance placement literature… evidently 11 out of the 15 that took the test got college credit for doing the coursework, so, that’s pretty neat.”

There are plans to add more A-P classes this year and in subsequent years. But that’s not all…
Davis – “Maybe of significance to me is that I hope they approve my contract. I’ve asked for a reduced contract this year, and I don’t think that’s controversial so…”

A sub-committee has been working out the details of reducing Davis’ schedule to four-days a week… he’ll take a commensurate 20-percent pay cut in the process. The board meets tonight, 6:30 PM at district offices.

The Power of Florence, this Saturday, will feature dozens and dozens of volunteer events. Anyone can help out with the “Ducks vs. Beavers food drive” organized by Courtney King and her friend Siarrah Rain. They’ll be standing by at Grocery Outlet, in front of the Florence Food Share truck with the scales, duly weighing and logging all donations. Food Share director Karen Lyn says last month her agency served an unprecedented 617 households leaving the shelves:
Lyn – “Pretty empty… unfortunately. Summertime is the time when people forget. I mean, it’s really popular to donate during the holidays and we welcome those donations… any time.”

The Ducks vs. Beavers food drive is just for pride… and is one of several events based in the Grocery Outlet parking lot on Saturday. But, there’ll be Power of Florence activities all over the area.

For the second week in a row the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has moved up, while Oregon’s average price shows a slight decline. Locally, the average price held steady at $3.65 a gallon. Oregon’s average, as measured by Triple-A fell a penny to $3.75 and the national average jumped up seven cents… it’s now at $3.64.

Scientists from Oregon State University will be ‘going green’ for a short time tomorrow when they study near-shore water movement at Yaquina Head in Newport. A dye called Flourescein will be used to turn the water a bright green as part of the study. Oceanographer Kipp Shearman says it’s pretty spectacular looking, but dissipates quickly, leaving no environmental impact. Shearman says it’s just part of a complex study.
Shearman – “So in addition to the dye we’re also putting in some ‘drifters’ which have GPS’ attached to them, so we will get information almost right away from this. So we will get a track of where the drifters went and we will also get images of where the dye went from cameras that are up on Yaquina Head.”

Shearman says the study will help scientists gauge the impacts of pollution and oil spills on inter-tidal areas and how best to help nature recover from those impacts.
