Christmas baskets will make do…
An estimated 550 households will get a box with the makings of a holiday meal the week before Christmas, but Jan Nieberlein says just how much goes in that box is dependent on fund-raising.
210 – “It is slower this year. We’re about $10,000 below what we should be right now.”
The Community Christmas Basket project started in Florence more than 30-years ago. Each holiday season they raise money, collect food, toys and even clothes, then pass them out to whoever thinks they may need it. Nieberlein said donations usually trickle in early in the fall, then come in stronger around Thanksgiving.
211 – “We spent $28,000 last year. We shoot for $30,000 and that’s with everything, not just the money, but, like the Rotary which, bless them, you know, raised funds for the turkeys.”
This year’s fund raising has been lagging behind even the last two years. Nieberlein says they don’t question why, they just make-do with what they have.
212 – “Then the baskets won’t have quite as much as they had last year. You know, we we, we’re on a cash only basis and so if we don’t have the money then we can’t buy the product.”
Cash contributions can be mailed to Post Office Box 1209, Florence. This year’s distribution will be at Three Rivers Casino Bingo Hall December 18th.
The National Weather Service is saying a wet and warm storm system laying up off shore is expected to bring a lot of rain to Western Oregon this weekend. But, they’re not sure just exactly where or when. Three to six inches of rain are expected in areas along the coast and on the coast range, likely on Saturday. One to three inches could fall at lower elevations inland. The rain could lead to sharp rises in river levels and flooding. Forecasters are saying they could issue a flood watch by later tomorrow or Saturday morning.
For the past 40 years or so the community has gathered together to honor the ‘First Citizen’… someone who has made a significant contribution in one way or another. An outstanding high school student has also been recognized as being the “Future First Citizen”. Three years ago the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce added five more categories and branded the entire evening as the Siuslaw Awards. The presentations are set for January 14th and nominations are now open for all categories… The business awards categories include Curb Appeal, Customer Service, and Community Caring. One goes to an area non-profit or service club… that’s the Spirit of Community. The key award, the Stu Johnston Business of the Year, is presented to the business that embodies qualities of growth, innovation, volunteerism and outstanding customer service. Last year’s winner was Coastal Fitness. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber Visitor’s Center.
Parent-teacher conferences at Siuslaw High School postponed because of snow the week before Thanksgiving will be offered a week from today. Administrators say the conferences will be offered on a ‘drop-in’ basis Thursday, December 16th from two to four pm. There will be no assigned conference times and meetings will be on a first come, first served basis.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a pickup truck
driver speeding away from police on Interstate 5 died in a crash
last night. Lt. Gregg Hastings says investigators think the man was
involved in a hit-and-run crash northbound on I-5 in the Roseburg
area. When a Sutherlin officer saw the pickup on the freeway about
15 minutes later and tried to stop it, Hastings says the driver
raced off at speeds close to 80 mph. He later smashed into a
deputy's car.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland-area transit agency has been
sued for $30 million by parents of two women killed by a bus and by
a young man injured in the same crash. Danielle Sale's father,
David, Sale and Jenee Hammel's mother, Vicki Flynn, filed separate
lawsuits against TriMet this week in Multnomah County Circuit
Court. Danielle Sale's boyfriend, 22-year-old Robert Gittings, also
filed suit, on Tuesday. Each of the lawsuits seeks $10 million.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Convicted Oregon child killer Diane Downs
says she won't participate in a parole hearing set for Friday. An
Oregon parole board official says the hearing will take place with
or without her. Downs made the same threat in 2008 when she was
first eligible for release, but then took part. This hearing will
take place in Salem, but Downs can testify via video from
Chowchilla, Calif., where she is imprisoned at the Valley State
Prison for Women.
ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada authorities say a worker was killed
while working on a section of the Ruby Pipeline that will carry
natural gas from Wyoming to Oregon. The Elko County Sheriff's
Office says 61-year-old Charles Kuhn, of Dresden, Ohio, died
Tuesday north of Elko. The pipeline will run from Opal (oh-PAL'),
Wyo., cross northern Utah and northern Nevada and end at Malin,
Ore. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will
investigate the accident.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - A pickup truck driver speeding away from
police on Interstate 5 is dead after read-ending a county sheriff's
cruiser last night. Troopers say a Douglas County sheriff's officer
parked his car on the shoulder and got out to deploy some spike
strips. The deputy managed to get out of the way before the truck
hit his patrol car.

2011 Leadership Classes in Jeopardy
A free leadership program that has been offered in the Florence area for the past several years is struggling to find participants in a new class set to begin in January. In an email to the ten people already enrolled in the Ford Institute Leadership Program, Sara Worl encouraged them to recruit additional students. Worl is one of the trainers for the class and is a Regional Program Associate for Rural Development Initiatives. The class is funded by a Roseburg based organization, the Ford Family Foundation, that aims to strengthen rural communities. The free program has already produced several classes in the Florence area. The intention is to recruit and equip people to take leadership roles in the community and broaden the pool of candidates for such things as local elected offices, volunteer positions and other key leadership roles. The class is free. Worl says they need to recruit about 15 more potential students by the end of the week or the 2011 class will have to be cancelled. Information is available at TFFF.ORG.

Flags at all public buildings in Oregon have been ordered to half-staff until sunset today in remembrance of Pearl Harbor. Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski ordered the flags to be lowered and encouraged all Oregonians to pay tribute to not only those who died in World War II, but also take the time to recognized all veterans and Americans currently serving overseas.
Each month on the second Saturday emergency planners present a workshop aimed at helping local residents prepare for disasters and wide-spread emergencies. This month they’ve reduced the scale a little bit. The monthly workshop presented by the Western Lane Emergency Operations Group will focus on ‘in-home’ safety. Instructors will present a variety of topics including the proper use and maintenance of smoke detectors. A demonstration of new ‘voice alert’ detectors will also be provided. This month’s workshop will be this Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 at Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue.
A high wind warning has been posted for the Oregon Coast from Reedsport south through the early morning hours of tomorrow. Forecasters are predicting strong south winds of 30 to 45 miles an hour gusting to 65 miles an hour beginning this afternoon. Gusts as high as 85 miles an hour are anticipated at Cape Arago and Cape Blanco. The highest impact area is expected to be between Cape Blanco and Port Orford.

Then his team was selected to play in the BCS championship game. Yesterday he was announced as the winner of the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. In his second season at the helm of Oregon football Kelly led the 2nd ranked Ducks into the national championship game for the first time. They’ll face top ranked Auburn in Glendale, Arizona January Tenth. The award has been presented by the Football Writers Association of America every year since 1957. In 1997 it was named in honor of the legendary Grambling State Coach Eddie Robinson. That was the same year it was last earned by a Pac-10 coach… Washington State’s Mike Price. One other Oregon Coach has been honored with the award, Rich Brooks in 1994.
The Siuslaw Vikings begin the basketball pre-season tonight in Bandon. The girls tip off at six, the boys 7:30. The first basketball broadcast of the year will be this Friday.

Empty bowls fill shelves - Cape Perpetua marine reserve clears hurdle - School Board holding supplemental budget hearing
Empty Bowls temporarily fill shelves…
Proceeds from the annual “Empty Bowls” fundraiser will be used to help fill the shelves at Florence Food Share… at least for a while. Bonnie MacDuffee, one of the organizers of the annual event, marked it as a success.
205 – “Preliminary numbers it looks like, we were able to bring in just over ten-thousand dollars in bowl sales over the weekend.”
Most of the bowls sold during the two-day event but there were some left over. They’ll be offered up for sale later this week at Grocery Outlet.
206 – “We have about 200 bowls left over so we wanted to make them available to whoever might have missed our sale on Friday and Saturday.”
Florence Food Share director Karen Lyn said while the event was successful in raising cash… that only translates into a few weeks worth of food on the shelves. Lyn said other efforts are very important at this time of year. Food drives like the postal food drive that wraps up this Saturday. Volunteers will be shadowing mail carriers to pick up non-perishable food items left by mail boxes.
Three proposed marine reserves off the Oregon Coast have cleared another hurdle. The Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council on Tuesday in Newport endorsed recommendations to create reserves off Cape Falcon, Cascade Head and Cape Perpetua. Under the terms of legislation enacted in 2009, they each include a core no-fishing zone surrounded by a wider area where bottom trawling and industrial development are limited. The idea is to preserve and scientifically study habitat refuges for marine life. The last hurdle comes in the legislative session next year, when the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks funding to regulate the reserves and conduct research. If approved, it will bring to five the number of reserves in
state waters within three miles of the coast.
The Siuslaw School Board will hold a brief supplemental budget hearing tonight to accommodate a $900-thousand loan that was recently approved for roof repairs. The loan, made available through a state and federal program, was not anticipated when the school’s budget committee was meeting earlier this year. That means the board has to hold a special hearing to make changes to the current year’s budget. The note comes with an attractive interest rate of one-quarter of one-percent. The board meets at district offices at 6:30.
More delays are expected over the Siuslaw River Bridge on highway 101 this week. Crews will be holding traffic for ten to 15 minutes at a time tomorrow as they inspect the new epoxy surface that was applied late this summer and this fall. The Fiber Reinforced Polymer is a relatively new and lightweight material. Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Rick Little says engineers want to evaluate the material’s effectiveness for future bridge deck replacement projects. Traffic will be restricted to one lane over the course of a few hours tomorrow.

hands of a jury. Bruce Turnidge and his son, Joshua, are charged

penalty if convicted.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A man who lived in the same grassy Ashland,
Ore., field as a homeless man accused of causing a massive wildfire
testified yesterday that he saw John David Thiry stamping at the
ground, "trying to put the fire out." The Mail Tribune reports
that the 40-year-old Thiry has pleaded not guilty to all the
charges in the Aug. 24 fire.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Passions were heated -- and that wasn't
all -- in the wake of last Saturday's 37-20 Oregon win over Oregon
State in the schools' annual football "Civil War" game -- played
this year in Corvallis. Now Oregon State Police want to talk with
the fan whose victory celebration in the center of the Reser
Stadium field may have charred the Oregon State Beavers' logo,
causing an estimated $1,500 damage to the turf -- and perhaps as
much as $5,000 or more.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man has been charged with murder
after the body of the woman who shared a house with him was found
in the back yard.
The Register-Guard reports that 24-year-old Miguel Angel Chavez
was arrested after the body of 55-year-old Deborah Ann Stone was
found in a shallow grave in the back yard of her Eugene home.
Eugene police say the relationship between Chavez and Stone was
unclear.
No details about the death were released.
Police were called to Stone's home on Monday, after a family
member reported her missing. Investigators discovered her body
several hours later.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A 19-year-old gang member who shot up a
Springfield house has been sentenced to four years in federal
prison.
The U.S. attorney's office in Eugene says the Springfield man,
Uriel Gonzalez-Hernandez, was sentenced Tuesday for being an alien
in possession of a firearm. He may be deported after his release.
Police and federal investigators say he fired five shots last
April into a house where a couple and their baby were sleeping.
When he was arrested, Gonzalez-Hernandez admitted he committed the
shooting to send a message.
As he was booked into the Lane County Jail, he was seen to have
a tattoo on his chest identifying him as a member of a Southern
California gang with ties to Mexico, the Surenos.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar meets
today with veterans of Oregon's timber wars to look for ways out of
decades of conflict over logging on federal lands. Representatives
of the timber industry, conservation groups and timber counties
hope to move forward on two pilot logging projects in southwestern
Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A little girl who survived when her mother
threw her and her younger brother off a Portland bridge has helped
dedicate a new Portland Fire Bureau rescue boat named in the
childrens' honor. Trinity Smith is now 8 years old. Her 4-year-old
brother Eldon Smith drowned when they were tossed into the
Willamette River in May 2009. The new fireboat is named the Eldon
Trinity.

Portland Trail Blazers rallied to beat Phoenix 106-99 last night,
snapping the Suns' three-game winning streak. The Suns led by as

Roblan tabbed as House Speaker Nominee
The balance of power is evenly split in the Oregon House of Representatives. With 30 Republicans and 30 Democrats in the chamber, party leaders on both sides are negotiating not only who will be in charge of the upcoming legislative session, but how the various bills are brought to the floor. Typically the party in majority selects one of their own to be the Speaker of the House… that person presides over the session and has a great deal of say over committee appointments, bill placement and other administrative issues. With the 30-30 tie, one proposal being worked out right now is the possibility of co-speakers… one from each party. Coos Bay Democrat Arnie Roblan has been picked by his party as the nominee for speaker or at least co-speaker. Roblan, recently elected to his third term in the Oregon House says he’s fully prepared to work for a plan that will “honor the will” of the majority of all House members. Dave Hunt, the speaker in the last session, will continue as the House Democratic Leader. The session is set to convene January 10th.

Michael Williams was taken into custody by Bend Police without incident over the weekend. He was indicted by a Lincoln County Grand Jury on a dozen counts. He disappeared from the coast earlier this year and is believed to have been in Bend for the past six months.
Oregon’s Dungeness Crab harvest has been certified as “sustainable” by the Marine Stewardship Council. The designation is based on a variety of factors including balancing harvest levels with the ability of the crustaceans to replenish themselves. Oregon’s Dungeness Crab harvest topped 23-million pounds last year and was valued at nearly $45-million.

Florence Parks Plan hearing set
Parks Plan Face Lift goes to council
The Florence City Council will hear comments Monday night on what’s being called a major face lift to the city’s parks master plan. After a lengthy process that involved several work sessions earlier this year, as well as hearings at the Planning Commission, the plan will make it’s way to the final decision making body, but not until after they hear from the public. The hearing is set for seven pm Monday at City Hall. Written comments can be submitted at any time before then. The plan is available on the city’s website. Florence Senior Planner Wendy Farley says it identifies some priorities for the future. She says residents want to see more walking trails, a dog park and open spaces. Other important findings that came out of the process include the importance of providing parks programming, upgrades to existing facilities and creating additional funding for parks.
Two of the most important events for Florence Food Share are happening this weekend. First up, beginning this evening, the annual Empty Bowls fund-raiser. More than one-thousand hand-crafted bowls, created by local artists and students will be up for sale. Each bowl comes with a coupon good for a cup of soup at any one of about a dozen participating restaurants. That’s from 5:30 to seven at the Florence Events Center this evening, then again tomorrow from ten until two. That event is expected to generate several thousand dollars in cash for the local food box pantry, while a two-weekend event that begins tomorrow will hopefully bring in as much as 12-thousand pounds of non-perishable food. The Cans for Carriers will have a slightly different look. Postal customers are still being asked to place canned food or other non-perishables out next to their mail boxes tomorrow and next Saturday. Instead of the carriers picking it up however, a cadre of local volunteers will be shadowing them and taking the food directly to Food Share.
Tuesday will be the 69th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Backers of the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum will observe the day with a ‘remembrance’ at Three Rivers Casino and Hotel.

Museum board member Cal Applebee says the displays will include a typical living room setup from the early 40s, military vehicles and memorabilia and even a display by tribal members showing wartime contributions made by Native Americans. In addition to the displays there will be some very rare images on display.

body in woods east of the city. Brian Cole has been jailed since he
was arrested July 1 at his home in Sagle, Idaho. His wife, Heather
Mallory, had not been seen since March 8, 2008, when investigators
say she had an argument with Cole at their Portland apartment. Her
skeletal remains were found last June. A trial is now set for
March.

victim has been identified as 32-year-old Randy Lee Willard. Lt.

Hillsboro are trying to determine why four 17-year-old high school
students who know each other became ill. Lt. Mike Rouches says
police suspect the four male Liberty High School students may have
taken some type of drug. Rouches says one student did say he took
brown pills but the teens are not commenting beyond that. The
Oregonian says police found no drugs in a search of the school.

Scott Ramsay has been declared the winner of a City Council seat --
by just three votes. After more than 30,000 ballots were recounted
by hand, Ramsay's victory margin over fellow businessman Chuck
Arnold grew by just one vote. KTVZ says the final tally was 10,503
votes to 10,500.

employers will hit more than 200 real estate agents, biotech
workers and manufactured home fabricators. Liberty Homes is
shutting down its plant in Sheridan; ZipRealty is ending its
operations in Oregon; bioMerieux is closing its Wilsonville
facility.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon regulators are endorsing Portland
General Electric's plan to close its coal-fired power plant at
Boardman by Dec. 31, 2020. They decided yesterday that the
guaranteed early closure date justifies a smaller investment in new
pollution controls between now and then.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Department of Justice will
remain in charge of the Umatilla County district attorney's office
during an investigation into alleged misconduct by DA Dean Gushwa.
The state attorney general's office has accused Gushwa of
intimidating and threatening two women he supervised into having
sexual relations with him.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Less travel could mean more Christmas tree
sales for Oregon growers as families stay home to celebrate the
holiday. Oregon's largest Christmas tree producer is Holiday Tree
Farms of Corvallis, where manager Dave Silen says a shift toward
more family gatherings this year could help sales.

Singler had a career high 19 points for Oregon… 17 of those in the second half. Oregon also had 15 point games from Jay-R Strowbridge, Joevan Catron and Freshman Jonathon Lloyd.
The Oregon Men will be back on the court Sunday afternoon in Eugene against Portland State at three… airtime on KCST is at 2:30. Community Colleges finances will be tight - Crabbers reach price agreement - Tracking whales by satellite - State Parks passes

Community Colleges looking at another tough revenue picture
Despite the most recent economic forecast that shows some revival in state revenue collections for the coming year, Lane Community College President Mary Spilde says the funding picture shaping up for the next legislative session remains gloomy.
205 – “It’s not going to be a good situation for any state-funded service. Whether it’s K-12, universities, community colleges or human services, corrections, I think it’s going to be a very very tight budget.”
The current state budget included $417-million for community colleges. That’s after mid-session cuts earlier this year.
206 – “I would be very surprised if the final number is any higher than that and I would not be surprised if it’s a good deal lower.”
Spilde says that will likely result in shortfalls for Lane.
207 – “How we respond to those will be a matter of working through our budget process over the next five or six months to see how we can deal with yet another round of budget reductions.”
Increasing tuition may not be a desirable option this time around. The College already has the highest rate of any of Oregon’s Community Colleges.

Oregon crabbers and processors have reached a price agreement for the opening of the lucrative Dungeness crab season. But, details of the agreement are likely to delay the opening which was scheduled for yesterday. The agreed price was $1.65 a pound, considerably higher than processors opening offer of $1.35… but ten cents lower than last year’s. Crabbers can get an extra two-and-a-half-cents a pound if they wait until December 12th to begin harvesting. Either price is dependent on quality testing. If samples don’t show a high enough density of meat negotiations would start all over again.
An Oregon State University scientist is helping a Russian-U.S. research team track an endangered western gray whale by satellite to learn more about migration routes and breeding grounds. Dr. Bruce Mate is director of the Marine Mammal Institute at OSU. He was a pioneer in the use of satellites to track whales beginning more than 30-years ago. He’s helping a team track the western gray whale off the coast of Russia’s Sakhalin Island. Researchers say there are only about 130 of the creatures remaining… and only about 30 to 35 of those are mature, reproductively active females.
Oregonians will be able to transfer Oregon State Parks Day-Use passes to a second vehicle this year. The state charges fees to access 26-different parks. Daily permits are $5 each, but annual passes are $30. Recreation Programs Manager Richard Walkoski says the transferable feature makes it good bargain. Adding to the value… the annual passes are on sale through the end of the year for $25. They can be purchased locally at the Honeyman State Park office on Highway 101 three miles south of Florence.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - Police have identified a body found on the

rested their case yesterday. Lawyers for Turnidge's 34-year-old

expected Monday.
JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) - An Army sergeant from
Portland charged with shooting at unarmed Afghans has pleaded
guilty in a deal that requires him to testify against other
defendants. Staff Sgt. Robert Stevens admitted to aggravated
assault and other charges at his court-martial yesterday.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A former Nike executive has pleaded guilty
to filing a false federal tax return and failing to declare more
than $20,000 in travelers checks when returning from South Korea.
Federal prosecutors say Ronald Hartfeil of Oregon City will be
sentenced March 8.

Postal Food Drive this weekend - gas steady - Our Town to look at LCC - Kiwanis Candy
Mail Food Drive to go on as planned…
When Karen Lyn found out that mail carriers would not be picking up food in the annual “cans for carriers” food drive this year, she didn’t panic. But, was concerned.
204 – “We, um, feel like this is too important of a food drive in too important of a year to let it go.”
Mail carriers said it was just too difficult to handle the increased mail delivery this time of year along with the added chore of collecting as much as 12-thousand pounds of food. So, Lyn, the manager of Florence Food Share came up with a solution.
205 – “This year the Florence post office is sponsoring the drive, but Food Share volunteers are actually picking up the food. This is our absolutely biggest food drive of the year and we really need the food.”
But, Lyn says, they need volunteers to shadow mail carriers both this Saturday and next Saturday, following them on their route and picking up donations that have been left by mailboxes. She says the collections during the postal drive can help stock shelves at Food Share well into the new year.
206 – “And that helps us really go for a while. It helps us a lot. So, we have to. We have to get the food.”
The largest food drive of the year also coincides with the largest fund drive for Food Share… the annual Empty Bowls fund raiser is set for Friday evening and Saturday at the Florence Events Center.
Lane Community College has had a dynamic presence in Florence over the years. Beginning with a ‘skills center’ in borrowed space at Siuslaw High School it eventually moved into a free-standing facility. Recent expansion and improvements to the center include a state of the art science lab and a new ‘smart’ classroom. Once focused on vocational and adult education classes, it now offers opportunities for a variety of accomplishments, including an Associate of Arts Transfer Degree and medical services training… even nursing. This afternoon’s Our Town on KCST will focus on what’s in store next for the center. Also during the program, there’ll be a look at the Lane Memorial Blood Bank; the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum and the annual Community Christmas Basket project… the show airs on KCST from four to six pm.
Prices at the pump haven’t shown much movement this week. The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded, as measured by Triple-A, dropped a cent-and-a-half this week and is at $2.85. The local average fell by a similar amount and is at $2.83 a gallon. Oregon’s Average price, according to Triple-A, held steady at $3.01. In Eugene, the average price is $3.06.
One local service organization had been gearing up to begin their annual Christmas Candy Sale today… But you’ll have to wait until Saturday for some See’s Candy. Once again, the Florence Kiwanis Club will be selling See’s inside the Sears Store across from Safeway. Candy will be available from ten to six Monday through Saturday… 11 to four Sundays… through Christmas Eve… or until they run out.

apparent arson fire was set two days after 19-year-old Mohamed
Osman Mohamud was arrested in Portland in an FBI terrorism sting
operation.
INDEPENDENCE, Calif. (AP) - Rescue crews are searching by ground
and by air for a hiker from Oregon who's missing in the wilderness
near California's Mt. Whitney. Inyo County sheriff's spokeswoman
Carma Roper says 37-year-old Christian Meining of Portland has not
been seen since Friday morning.
NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) - The Yamhill County sheriff's office says it
has suspended the search for a Newberg man believed to have
disappeared last Friday while fishing on the Willamette River.
Sheriff's Capt. Ken Summers cited poor weather, rising water levels
and the risk to divers as the search ended yesterday for
49-year-old Kevin Troy Williams.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland man has been sentenced to more
than 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of
unarmed bank robbery. James Michael Wallace had just been released
from a 12-year federal prison stay for bank robbery when
investigators say he began to rob again.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon may face summer water shortages,
an increased wildfire risk and more extreme weather events if
temperatures keep warming up. That from a new report examining
potential responses to an Oregon climate that may increase in
average temperature by up to one degree Fahrenheit per decade
through this century.

Portland metro area harder than many other big cities around the
world. The Oregonian reports Portland fell from a pre-recession
rank of 45th to 139th during the worst of the recession, one of the
steepest declines among the 150 metros in the survey.
