Florence Area native Fred Jensen will be honored Friday night as the First Citizen for 2011. Jensen, who grew up on the Siuslaw River, was an active member of the business community for many years before retiring. He was nominated for the award by Del Phelps who said Jensen’s community service began at Florence High School where he was president of the National Honor Society… but that was just the beginning.
210 – “Most importantly, was service to the museum for many many years, president for three years. And still, comes into the museum three or four days a week and does all the little things that need to be done around there to make it a very nice and wonderful and pleasant place to come.”
Jensen has served on the museum’s board of directors since 1989. He’s also responsible for many of the black and white historical photos of the area that grace the museum and many other homes and businesses in Florence. He’ll be honored Friday evening during the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Siuslaw Awards Dinner. Four others were nominated for the award this year, Art Koning, Michael Cooper, Steve Olienyk and Wendy Wells.
$2-million in left over federal stimulus money will be put to use to create about 20 near-term jobs that, according to Governor John Kitzhaber, will create some potential long-term benefits for the state. Kitzhaber released a list of actions yesterday aimed at creating jobs in the areas of energy efficiency, biomass and manufacturing. He directed the Department of Energy to use the $2-million to conduct energy audits on as many as 500 school buildings in the state. That, he hopes, will lay the groundwork for meeting one of his campaign goals: weatherizing public school buildings.
Snow and freezing rain in the lower Willamette Valley turned to sleet in many areas this morning, disrupting travel in portions of northwest Oregon and the Portland area. Some schools let out early yesterday because of snow accumulation and Interstate 84 near Cascade Locks was closed for a time early this morning. The central coast was spared the icy conditions but did receive some high winds overnight. A high wind of 40-miles was noted locally with the highest gust recorded at Sea Lion Caves was 64 miles an hour. Forecasters say winds will begin subsiding through the day. Snow is expected to continue accumulating in the central and northern Cascades.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Florence area broke through the three dollar mark this week, it’s at $3.03… that’s up four cents since last week. The national average, as measured by Triple-A is up a penny-and-a-half at $3.09 while Oregon’s average price went up nearly three cents and is now at $3.17. Triple A reports that analysts say 2011 could shape up to be a year similar to 2008 as far as gas prices go. That’s when prices soared above four-dollars a gallon.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A 58-year-old Good Samaritan who helped
police catch a car prowler in Eugene collapsed and died while
walking back to his office.
Brad Killian's wife Deborah told The Register-Guard there were
no warning signs, and while it appeared he died of a heart attack
the official cause has not yet been determined.
Killian was a former police officer who worked as an addictions
counselor. He called police Friday when he saw a man trying to
break into cars. Killian followed the man until police arrived and
arrested the 22-year-old suspect.
Killian collapsed minutes later and could not be revived.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Officials in Ontario, Ore., say a Fruitland,
Idaho, man whose body was found in the parking lot of an Oregon
truck dealership died of exposure. The Idaho Statesman reports an
autopsy performed on 27-year-old Israel Zuniga Jr. determined that
Zuniga died of exposure and no foul play was involved. Zuniga's
body was found under a semi truck Jan. 3.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A prosecutor in the murder trial of a
Corbett woman accused of killing her husband and burning his
remains has told jurors that burned bone fragments found on the
couple's property have been verified as belonging to Jerry Stomps.
But a defense lawyer for Hazelynn Stomps told the panel yesterday
that the prosecution can't prove its case because, in Randall
Vogt's words, "the evidence simply isn't there." The trial will
continue today in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A Marion County sheriff's deputy is being
praised for grabbing a suicidal man and refusing to let go, even
when the two of them tumbled into the chilly Santiam River.
Sheriff's officials say had Deputy Jason Bernards let go, the man
likely would have been swept into deeper water to his death. Deputy
Brian Dunkin managed to pull the two to safety.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - PacifiCorp has formally complained it
was not properly consulted by federal agencies before they cut
flows that affect power production by Klamath River dams. It's the
first test of the landmark agreement to remove dams from the river.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Two men have been sentenced in Eugene for
separate rapes in Lane County with one thing in common - the
teenage victims had been drinking. The Register-Guard reports
22-year-old Cuahutomoc Rojas was sentenced to more than six years
in prison, and 27-year-old Kalei Aloha Morris was sentenced to 10
years.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) - Clackamas County commissioners are
considering banning booing, clapping, and carrying signs at
commission meetings. Chairwoman Lynn Peterson says the goal of the
draft policy is to make meetings safe, secure and friendly to all.

Attorney General Eric Holder's comments in the case of a teenager

Siuslaw Wrestling coach Neil Wartnik said every match was hotly contested, but Viking Grapplers were able to only win four of 11 matches last night, losing a dual meet against Brookings-Harbor 42-19. The loss puts Siuslaw at one-and-one in league duals. Individual winners last night… Taylor Porter at 130 pounds, Neil Larson at 160, Zack Ough at 189 and Aaron T’eo at 289. The Vikings are getting ready for the second annual Nick Lutz Invitational this Saturday. Between 15 and 20 teams will spend the day on the mats at Siuslaw High School.
On the prep court last night, for the girls… the Siuslaw Vikings added their third straight victory to the string, opening Far West League play with a 48-39 win over the Douglas Trojans in Winston. Nikki Parry had a career high 17 points for the Vikings, Kasey Strenke 13 and Leigh Aurich added a dozen. In the Sunset league, Reedsport fell to Gold Beach 34 – 14; and in the Mountain West it was Mohawk over Mapleton 77 – 33.
For the boys, the Vikings opened up Far West play last night as well, losing on the road to Douglas 50 – 36. Gold Beach beat Reedsport 50 – 34. In the Mountain West, Micah Espinosa had a game high 34 points, but the Mapleton Sailors fell to Mohawk, 80 – 55.

Oregon misses number one by three…
Auburn running back Michael Dyer turned a short run into a 37-yard gain by spinning over the top of a defender, setting up the winning field goal in the top ranked Tigers’ 22-19 win last night over the Oregon Ducks in the BCS national championship game. After Oregon tied the score with 2:33 remaining, Dyer took a run right and appeared to be down, but his knee never hit the ground and he held himself up with his hand. It was the next run that did the damage, as Dyer exploded up the middle for a 16-yard run to the one, setting up a first and goal. Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton was pushed back a yard, mostly to run the clock from ten seconds to two seconds. Then kicker Wes Byrum capped the 73-yard drive with a 19-yard field goal as time expired, giving Auburn its first national title since 1957 and the Southeastern Conference’s fifth in a row.
Duck fans had gathered all over Oregon to watch the game. About 35-hundred were in MacArthur Court in Eugene for a watch party. More than 350 filled the events-center at Three Rivers Casino. The crowds at both locations were raucous at times, but were quietly stunned as Byrum’s kick lifted through the goalposts…
Three local businesses have been nominated for the top honor that will be handed out this Friday night during the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Siuslaw Awards banquet. Nominated for the Stu Johnston Business of the Year are Siuslaw Bank, Sue Gilday’s State Farm Insurance, and Mon Ami Gourmet Deli and Antiques. Mon Ami, along with the Florence Dental Clinic have been named finalists in the Community Caring category. The Excellence in Customer Service award will go to either Maple Street Grille, Best Western Pier Point Inn or Flowers by Bobbi. Three business have been nominated for the Curb Appeal… The Wren’s Nest, Heceta Self Storage, and Oil Can Henry’s. Awards will be handed out Friday night at the Florence Events Center along with the First and Future First Citizens. Tickets are available at the Chamber Visitor Center.
Oregon’s House of Representatives, evenly split with 30 Republicans and 30 Democrats, handled their first piece of business yesterday with a unanimous decision. Granted, the outcome was expected as they approved the nominations of Bruce Hanna and Arnie Roblan as Co-Speakers, as well as an agreement that spells out how power will be shared between the two parties. Roblan, the Democrat from Coos Bay, says Oregon has a chance to show that bi-partisanship can work and that – quote – “we can conduct our business with respect for our colleagues”. Hanna, the Republican from Roseburg, agreed and said the agreement establishes a “fair process”. Both said a similar bi-partisan approach will be taken to establishing the 2011-13 budget. That intention will no doubt be tested as lawmakers will have to find a way to balance the document that is estimated to be $3.5-billion short of the needed funding to sustain services currently offered.

Oregon’s usually fast paced running game struggled. LaMichael James, the nation’s leading rusher with 153-yards a game, was held to just 49-yards while Oregon’s team rushing reached just 75 yards. There was a bright spot in Oregon’s offense though, despite two interceptions and being sacked twice, Darron Thomas had career highs with 27-of-40 passing for 363 yards

Kitzhaber third term - Geography Bee results - First citizen nominees and "Pull your head out of your Duck!"
Lawmakers get back to work today… for a while.
John Kitzhaber took the oath of office this morning to begin an unprecedented third term as governor of Oregon. After an eight-year hiatus from public life, Kitzhaber is taking back the helm of a state in need of a boost. Oregon is reeling from joblessness with a budget deficit looming that will soon bring steep cuts in services. Kitzhaber has laid out lofty goals to transform the way government thinks and operates. He’ll have to tackle a budget with a $3.5 billion shortfall. Also today, the Legislature will convene for the first time. It’ll be the first test of whether or not a tied House can collaborate to get work done. Roseburg Republican Bruce Hanna and Coos Bay Democrat Arnie Roblan are expected to share Speaker of the House Duties. In the Senate, Democrats hold a 16-14 advantage and Peter Courtney will be sworn in for a fifth term… more than any Senate president in history. Lawmakers plan on laying out their work for this session and spend three or four days in Salem before heading back home later in the week. They’ll return to the Capitol February First when they formally open the session.
Five nominees for Florence’s First Citizen Award have been announced. One will be selected and introduced during the annual Siuslaw Awards this Friday nights. The quintet, Michael Cooper, Fred Jensen, Art Koning, Steve Olienyk and Wendy Wells, represent a vast array of local involvement and community service. In addition to the First Citizen award, one outstanding Siuslaw High School Senior will be named as Future First Citizen. Four nominees were announced… Keenan Bishop, Logan Bliss, Lyndee Center and Meghan Connor. John Kitzhaber took the oath of office this morning to begin an unprecedented third term as governor of Oregon. After an eight-year hiatus from public life, Kitzhaber is taking back the helm of a state in need of a boost. Oregon is reeling from joblessness with a budget deficit looming that will soon bring steep cuts in services. Kitzhaber has laid out lofty goals to transform the way government thinks and operates. He’ll have to tackle a budget with a $3.5 billion shortfall. Also today, the Legislature will convene for the first time. It’ll be the first test of whether or not a tied House can collaborate to get work done. Roseburg Republican Bruce Hanna and Coos Bay Democrat Arnie Roblan are expected to share Speaker of the House Duties. In the Senate, Democrats hold a 16-14 advantage and Peter Courtney will be sworn in for a fifth term… more than any Senate president in history. Lawmakers plan on laying out their work for this session and spend three or four days in Salem before heading back home later in the week. They’ll return to the Capitol February First when they formally open the session.
Five nominees for Florence’s First Citizen Award have been announced. One will be selected and introduced during the annual Siuslaw Awards this Friday nights. The quintet, Michael Cooper, Fred Jensen, Art Koning, Steve Olienyk and Wendy Wells, represent a vast array of local involvement and community service. In addition to the First Citizen award, one outstanding Siuslaw High School Senior will be named as Future First Citizen. Kitzhaber's delay in naming staff concerning to lawmakers - pruning class available - heating assistance put on hold

One of the planks of his campaign platform was that John Kitzhaber was a proven leader and would be ready to govern on ‘day one’ if elected. For the most part, say lawmakers, that appears to be the case. Since November the former two-term governor has been meeting with legislative leaders of both parties in an effort to forge working relationships. But, says Coos Bay Democratic State Senator Joanne Verger, there’s still something lacking.

The Governor Elect has made no secret that he won’t name key staff positions until about a month after Monday’s inauguration. Verger hopes that will change… One example of how the lack of staffers in the governor’s office will impact the Oregon Coast lies in efforts to create jobs.

LIHEAP is a winter-time program that provides qualifying households with a one-time payment towards their energy bill. It can be applied to electricity, propane, heating oil, wood pellets or even firewood. Information on the program can be had by calling 541-682-FUEL.
While many of the Lane County Home Extension programs have withered, there are still some available. Ross Penhallegon says they’ll be holding their annual Florence fruit tree pruning class next week. The demonstration will show proper pruning techniques. Attendees will meet at the Florence Events Center next Thursday at Nine AM then carpool to the class site on Clear Lake Road. Due to the elimination of county funds, Penhallegon says there is a five-dollar charge. You can pre-register by calling the OSU Extension Office in Eugene at 541-344-0265.

valuable fire alarm yesterday -- his insistent barking alerted his
Happy Valley owner to a neighbor's blazing minivan. Fire officials
say Oscar's owner found the dog looking out a window at the fire,
barking relentlessly. She called 911 and fire crews were able to
douse the blaze before it spread to the neighbor's home.

76th Legislative session set to begin - Counting Coho - Gas taxes kick in - Lane County man facing 306 years
Lawmakers to break new ground in Salem…
The 76th Oregon Legislative Session is scheduled to begin next Monday and when lawmakers return to Salem they’ll face some different conditions than what they’re used to. This session, in the house, there’s an even 30-30 split between Republicans and Democrats. That’s prompted an innovative power sharing arrangement. Coos Bay Democrat Arnie Roblan will split Speaker of the House duties with Roseburg Republican Bruce Hanna. There have never been “co-speakers” and the new arrangement will bring an added wrinkle. Hanna says it could force lawmakers to work more closely together and not be concerned as much about partisan politics. What won’t change in Salem this session, however, is the money challenge. Despite having an additional $1.8-billion in revenue, lawmakers still don’t expect to have enough money to fund all programs that have been provided in the past. In fact, one of the first things they’ll have to deal with next week is balancing the current budget that runs through the end of June.

Some of that increased revenue going to Salem is in the form of increased taxes on motor fuel. The 2008 Legislature increased the gas tax from 24 to 30-cents a gallon, but delayed implementation until January First of this year. That’s expected to generate about $300-million for the Oregon Department of Transportation. While State taxes make up about ten-percent of the cost for fuel in Oregon, it’s still less than in neighboring states. In Washington drivers pay 37 ½ cents a gallon in taxes; in California it’s nearly 47-cents. Oregon’s average for a gallon of regular unleaded as measured by Triple-A, is up six cents to $3.14. In Florence the average is up seven cents to $2.99 a gallon.
The number of Coho Salmon returning to Tahkenitch Lake is nearing counts from the 1960s and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has the video evidence to back that up. Fish biologist John Spangler says video recording equipment on loan from the Siletz Band of Indians allowed him to get a good count of wild coho returning to spawn in the lake’s streams. On one day more than 700 fish passed by the camera and totals for the past few months matched numbers recorded in the 1960s. In a story published in the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program Newsletter this week Spangler said there are some modifications still needed in order to get a better count, and, he adds, it may be better suited to monitor smolt counts as they head down stream to the ocean in the spring. Anglers reported good success for wild coho in Tahkenitch as well as Siltcoos this fall.
Florence Police Chief Maury Sanders said the New Years’ holiday in Florence was relatively quiet. Between Friday, December 31st and Sunday the second there were no arrests for driving under the influence by either city police officers or Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies. Sanders said there were also no major crashes or other incidents reported in that time period.
Eugene man pleads guilty to sexually abusing boy

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A Eugene man has pleaded guilty to
repeatedly sexually abusing a boy and filming some of the sexual
encounters.
The Register-Guard reports that David James Woodworth made the
plea Tuesday to 20 counts that included sexual abuse, sodomy and
using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct. He
previously denied the allegations.
Judge Charles Zennache says Woodworth could face more than 306
years in prison, since 16 of the charges carry mandatory minimum
prison terms under state law.
Court documents show that Lane County authorities arrested
Woodworth in September after a woman said she found in his computer
dozens of photos of him sexually abusing a boy.
An affidavit shows the woman also told authorities she found
child pornography in a photo album and on his cell phone.

The 76th Oregon Legislative Session is scheduled to begin next Monday and when lawmakers return to Salem they’ll face some different conditions than what they’re used to. This session, in the house, there’s an even 30-30 split between Republicans and Democrats. That’s prompted an innovative power sharing arrangement. Coos Bay Democrat Arnie Roblan will split Speaker of the House duties with Roseburg Republican Bruce Hanna. There have never been “co-speakers” and the new arrangement will bring an added wrinkle. Hanna says it could force lawmakers to work more closely together and not be concerned as much about partisan politics. What won’t change in Salem this session, however, is the money challenge. Despite having an additional $1.8-billion in revenue, lawmakers still don’t expect to have enough money to fund all programs that have been provided in the past. In fact, one of the first things they’ll have to deal with next week is balancing the current budget that runs through the end of June.

Some of that increased revenue going to Salem is in the form of increased taxes on motor fuel. The 2008 Legislature increased the gas tax from 24 to 30-cents a gallon, but delayed implementation until January First of this year. That’s expected to generate about $300-million for the Oregon Department of Transportation. While State taxes make up about ten-percent of the cost for fuel in Oregon, it’s still less than in neighboring states. In Washington drivers pay 37 ½ cents a gallon in taxes; in California it’s nearly 47-cents. Oregon’s average for a gallon of regular unleaded as measured by Triple-A, is up six cents to $3.14. In Florence the average is up seven cents to $2.99 a gallon.
The number of Coho Salmon returning to Tahkenitch Lake is nearing counts from the 1960s and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has the video evidence to back that up. Fish biologist John Spangler says video recording equipment on loan from the Siletz Band of Indians allowed him to get a good count of wild coho returning to spawn in the lake’s streams. On one day more than 700 fish passed by the camera and totals for the past few months matched numbers recorded in the 1960s. In a story published in the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program Newsletter this week Spangler said there are some modifications still needed in order to get a better count, and, he adds, it may be better suited to monitor smolt counts as they head down stream to the ocean in the spring. Anglers reported good success for wild coho in Tahkenitch as well as Siltcoos this fall.
Florence Police Chief Maury Sanders said the New Years’ holiday in Florence was relatively quiet. Between Friday, December 31st and Sunday the second there were no arrests for driving under the influence by either city police officers or Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies. Sanders said there were also no major crashes or other incidents reported in that time period.
Eugene man pleads guilty to sexually abusing boy

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A Eugene man has pleaded guilty to
repeatedly sexually abusing a boy and filming some of the sexual
encounters.
The Register-Guard reports that David James Woodworth made the
plea Tuesday to 20 counts that included sexual abuse, sodomy and
using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct. He
previously denied the allegations.
Judge Charles Zennache says Woodworth could face more than 306
years in prison, since 16 of the charges carry mandatory minimum
prison terms under state law.
Court documents show that Lane County authorities arrested
Woodworth in September after a woman said she found in his computer
dozens of photos of him sexually abusing a boy.
An affidavit shows the woman also told authorities she found
child pornography in a photo album and on his cell phone.

U.S. embargo against Iran in a money laundering and tax fraud
scheme have pleaded not guilty in an Oregon courtroom. Dr. Hossein
Lahiji (la-hee-zhee) and Najmeh Vahid (nahj-meh vah-heed) appeared
in federal court in Portland, the headquarters of a charity that
prosecutors say was the conduit for more than $1.8 million
disguised as contributions. They were released after yesterday's
brief hearing.
KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) - A 36-year-old man has been charged with
kidnapping and criminal endangerment after a six-hour standoff at a
Montana hotel, where he allegedly barricaded himself with a

Real estate market improving - Antiques Roadshow - Steelhead strategies - Shore Acres lights coming down
Local Real Estate Market showing sluggish signs of recovery
You may not be able to tell on the surface, but the Florence area real estate market is on the rebound. In 2010 there were 255 residential sales, up from 222 the year before, and well above a record low of 214 in 2008. Tawfik Ahdab, a Certified Residential Appraiser with the Pacific Valuation Group says despite more sales, the mean and median prices for homes has dropped.
200 – “This correction is partly due to short sales and foreclosures, but they’re still not dominant factors in the market. Willing sellers are certainly one of the main reasons that we’re seeing these prices lower and that’s helped our sales volume go up.”
Tight financing continues to bog the market down. That’s contributed to the “buyer’s market” atmosphere as it strengthens the position of cash buyers.
201 – “Many people who are prospective purchasers in the Florence area are unable to qualify for financing. So, that’s definitely been an impediment to sales in this market area. As a result we’re seeing what was already a strong cash buying market is in fact extending to a record high.”
Ahdab says he’s checked with many area realtors and they’re reporting light traffic in the final month of December. But he’s optimistic about the future.

The seven pm Wednesday meeting at the Florence Elks Lodge on 12th street coincides with the beginning of the group’s signature activity… the steelhead brood stock program. Volunteers are busy installing a weir on Whittaker Creek to trap fish. Volunteers will harvest the eggs and milt for the hatchery program.
Volunteers at Shore Acres State Park are hard at work this week packing up and storing the more than 300-thousand L-E-D lights that have graced the botanical gardens at that location since Thanksgiving. Holiday Lights organizer Shirley Bridgham says the 24th annual event drew fewer visitors this year than in 2008. According to the count kept by the Oregon Parks and Recreation, just over 49-thousand people toured the park between thanksgiving and New Years’ day. That’s down from a high of 53-thousand last year.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A 31-year-old Creswell man has been
sentenced to 35 years in prison for kidnapping a Eugene
acquaintance last summer, driving her to a remote location and
repeatedly sexually assaulting her. The term includes Matthew

asking the bureau to study the shootings to determine if changes to
protocols or tactics are needed.

Two councils to convene tonight - Western Douglas sees two transit programs - Mojo finds a home - KCFM expands Music of Your Life toMappleton
Florence City Council to transition this evening…
Two city councils and two meetings tonight at Florence City Hall. Both councils will have very similar makeups however. The outgoing council will convene at seven PM, approve the minutes of the December 13th meeting and receive a presentation by the VFW on a fire hydrant painting project then break for a reception in honor of outgoing councilor Alan Burns. Burns is wrapping up his second stint on the council, he first served beginning in 1992 and, other than a two year break in the middle, has been heavily involved in city government the entire time. Following the break, the new council will convene and swear in Phil Brubaker as Mayor and Suzanne Roberts as councilor. Both won reelection in November. First time councilor Brian Jagoe will also be sworn in. The 2011 council will have plenty of work to do. They’ll review the 2010 council goals and consider adopting a new set that they worked on last month. Also up will be approval of a new employment agreement for city manager Bob Willoughby and amendments to planning and building fees.
Residents of the Mapleton Area have another option when it comes to listening to the radio. And it’s an option that could eventually bring access to Mapleton Sailor athletics on a more regular basis. KCFM AM 1250 now has two FM translators… at 104.1 in the Florence and Dunes City Areas, and at 103.1 in Mapleton that provide clear, 24-hour signals, in stereo. Coast Radio Owner and General Manager Jon Thompson says the expansion offers a benefit to Oregon State Beaver fans… KCFM has been the home of Beaver football and basketball, but in the old days, AM 1250 had to reduce power at sundown, limiting the coverage… now both translators offer full power, 24-hours a day and provide the Music of Your Life from the Peterson Tunnel on Highway 126 to Sea Lion Caves and the Lane County-Douglas County lines.
Douglas County is seeking written comments on a variety of transportation programs, including two that will affect Reedsport, Gardiner and Winchester Bay. Funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation will provide inter-city bus service between Coos Bay and Reedsport. That money, $16-thousand, would go to Coos County Transit. A sea otter rescued from an Alaska beach has found a new home at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Mojo was found in Homer, Alaska in October, officials say the six-month old otter appeard to have been hit by a boat, suffering a broken jaw and several cuts. After quarantine and recuperation he was deemed unsuitable to be returned to the wild. He was introduced to the aquarium’s otter habitat for the first time last Thursday.

of Interstate 5 just south of Grants Pass. State Police say a car
went out of control on an icy stretch of pavement around 6:30 a.m.
Saturday as trooper Eric Tholberg and a colleague were
investigating a crash. The driver wasn't ticketed.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The lumber trade dispute is erupting once
again between the United States and Canada. The Oregonian says,
this time, the fight includes Oregon mill owners, a renegade
Canadian lumber baron and North America's most destructive bark
beetle. The conflict entangles two nations, with two-way trade
exceeding $430 billion a year.
OAKLAND, Ore. (AP) - The 2010 grape harvest on Legacy Vineyards
could have been worse. Considering the wet spring, cool summer and
late harvest marred by the arrival of hundreds of hungry migrating
birds, the 6 tons of tempranillo grapes and 3 tons of pinot noir
were a respectable take. But the Register-Guard reports the best
news for wine growers Kevin and Karen Kohlman was this: Their vines
did not get hit this season by pesticides drifting onto their
property from surrounding private industrial forestlands -- unlike
several previous years.
RENO, Nev. (AP) - Wild horse activists are criticizing BLM
Director Bob Abbey's plans to attend a Las Vegas conference held by
groups that support euthanasia as a way to deal with excess numbers
of the animals. Advocates think it's inappropriate for Abbey to
address groups that seek to profit from horse slaughter. The BLM
manages 38,000 wild horses and burros in Oregon and other western
states.
LEBANON, Ore. (AP) - A project to build a few homes near Lebanon
has been in the works for a decade. It has taken that long for Linn
County commissioners to rule that the 15 acres is not valuable farm
or forest land. The project has been blocked primarily by the
Friends of Linn County, a group that tries to conserve farm and
forest lands.
CHEMULT, Ore. (AP) - A California woman is dead after her car
went out of control U.S. 97 and was struck by another vehicle near
Chemult in central Oregon. State Police said 65-year old Hadley Ann
Alger of Chico was returning home from vacation visiting a relative
in the Bend area.
NEW YORK (AP) - A Canadian real estate company says it's offered
$211 million for the U.S. regional TV and radio station owner
Fisher Communications Inc. but said the offer had been rejected.
Fisher operates a group of 28 broadcast stations in Washington
state, Oregon and Idaho.

Joe Burton’s basket in the lane with 28-seconds remaining, followed by four straight Calvin Haynes freethrows lifted Oregon State to their second straight Pac-Ten win, this one 76-75 at home over the Arizona Wildcats. Haynes had 18 points, Jared Cunningham 17 and Burton 16 for the Beavers who swept the Arizona schools at home for the second straight year. Carrick Felix had 19 points and Arizona State held off Oregon 60-55 Saturday night in the final game at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Oregon men are at oh-and-two in Pac-10 play. They head out on the road this week and will be back at home January 13th when they host USC for the first game at Matthew Knight Arena.
Two undefeated teams are in Phoenix, Arizona this week as they prepare for the BCS National Championship game one week from today. Number One Auburn, at 13-0 and Number Two Oregon, 12-0, will kick off at 5:30 PM Monday, January Tenth.
Two city councils and two meetings tonight at Florence City Hall. Both councils will have very similar makeups however. The outgoing council will convene at seven PM, approve the minutes of the December 13th meeting and receive a presentation by the VFW on a fire hydrant painting project then break for a reception in honor of outgoing councilor Alan Burns. Burns is wrapping up his second stint on the council, he first served beginning in 1992 and, other than a two year break in the middle, has been heavily involved in city government the entire time. Following the break, the new council will convene and swear in Phil Brubaker as Mayor and Suzanne Roberts as councilor. Both won reelection in November. First time councilor Brian Jagoe will also be sworn in. The 2011 council will have plenty of work to do. They’ll review the 2010 council goals and consider adopting a new set that they worked on last month. Also up will be approval of a new employment agreement for city manager Bob Willoughby and amendments to planning and building fees.

Douglas County is seeking written comments on a variety of transportation programs, including two that will affect Reedsport, Gardiner and Winchester Bay.
