Empty Bowls temporarily fill shelves…
Proceeds from the annual “Empty Bowls” fundraiser will be used to help fill the shelves at Florence Food Share… at least for a while. Bonnie MacDuffee, one of the organizers of the annual event, marked it as a success.
205 – “Preliminary numbers it looks like, we were able to bring in just over ten-thousand dollars in bowl sales over the weekend.”
Most of the bowls sold during the two-day event but there were some left over. They’ll be offered up for sale later this week at Grocery Outlet.
206 – “We have about 200 bowls left over so we wanted to make them available to whoever might have missed our sale on Friday and Saturday.”
Florence Food Share director Karen Lyn said while the event was successful in raising cash… that only translates into a few weeks worth of food on the shelves. Lyn said other efforts are very important at this time of year. Food drives like the postal food drive that wraps up this Saturday. Volunteers will be shadowing mail carriers to pick up non-perishable food items left by mail boxes.
Three proposed marine reserves off the Oregon Coast have cleared another hurdle. The Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council on Tuesday in Newport endorsed recommendations to create reserves off Cape Falcon, Cascade Head and Cape Perpetua. Under the terms of legislation enacted in 2009, they each include a core no-fishing zone surrounded by a wider area where bottom trawling and industrial development are limited. The idea is to preserve and scientifically study habitat refuges for marine life. The last hurdle comes in the legislative session next year, when the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks funding to regulate the reserves and conduct research. If approved, it will bring to five the number of reserves in
state waters within three miles of the coast.
The Siuslaw School Board will hold a brief supplemental budget hearing tonight to accommodate a $900-thousand loan that was recently approved for roof repairs. The loan, made available through a state and federal program, was not anticipated when the school’s budget committee was meeting earlier this year. That means the board has to hold a special hearing to make changes to the current year’s budget. The note comes with an attractive interest rate of one-quarter of one-percent. The board meets at district offices at 6:30.
More delays are expected over the Siuslaw River Bridge on highway 101 this week. Crews will be holding traffic for ten to 15 minutes at a time tomorrow as they inspect the new epoxy surface that was applied late this summer and this fall. The Fiber Reinforced Polymer is a relatively new and lightweight material. Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Rick Little says engineers want to evaluate the material’s effectiveness for future bridge deck replacement projects. Traffic will be restricted to one lane over the course of a few hours tomorrow.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon case of a father and son accused
of planting a bomb that killed two police officers is now in the
hands of a jury. Bruce Turnidge and his son, Joshua, are charged
with aggravated murder and other counts stemming from the explosion
at a Woodburn bank two years ago. The Turnidges face the death
penalty if convicted.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A man who lived in the same grassy Ashland,
Ore., field as a homeless man accused of causing a massive wildfire
testified yesterday that he saw John David Thiry stamping at the
ground, "trying to put the fire out." The Mail Tribune reports
that the 40-year-old Thiry has pleaded not guilty to all the
charges in the Aug. 24 fire.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Passions were heated -- and that wasn't
all -- in the wake of last Saturday's 37-20 Oregon win over Oregon
State in the schools' annual football "Civil War" game -- played
this year in Corvallis. Now Oregon State Police want to talk with
the fan whose victory celebration in the center of the Reser
Stadium field may have charred the Oregon State Beavers' logo,
causing an estimated $1,500 damage to the turf -- and perhaps as
much as $5,000 or more.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man has been charged with murder
after the body of the woman who shared a house with him was found
in the back yard.
The Register-Guard reports that 24-year-old Miguel Angel Chavez
was arrested after the body of 55-year-old Deborah Ann Stone was
found in a shallow grave in the back yard of her Eugene home.
Eugene police say the relationship between Chavez and Stone was
unclear.
No details about the death were released.
Police were called to Stone's home on Monday, after a family
member reported her missing. Investigators discovered her body
several hours later.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A 19-year-old gang member who shot up a
Springfield house has been sentenced to four years in federal
prison.
The U.S. attorney's office in Eugene says the Springfield man,
Uriel Gonzalez-Hernandez, was sentenced Tuesday for being an alien
in possession of a firearm. He may be deported after his release.
Police and federal investigators say he fired five shots last
April into a house where a couple and their baby were sleeping.
When he was arrested, Gonzalez-Hernandez admitted he committed the
shooting to send a message.
As he was booked into the Lane County Jail, he was seen to have
a tattoo on his chest identifying him as a member of a Southern
California gang with ties to Mexico, the Surenos.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar meets
today with veterans of Oregon's timber wars to look for ways out of
decades of conflict over logging on federal lands. Representatives
of the timber industry, conservation groups and timber counties
hope to move forward on two pilot logging projects in southwestern
Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A little girl who survived when her mother
threw her and her younger brother off a Portland bridge has helped
dedicate a new Portland Fire Bureau rescue boat named in the
childrens' honor. Trinity Smith is now 8 years old. Her 4-year-old
brother Eldon Smith drowned when they were tossed into the
Willamette River in May 2009. The new fireboat is named the Eldon
Trinity.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Wesley Matthews scored 24 points as the
Portland Trail Blazers rallied to beat Phoenix 106-99 last night,
snapping the Suns' three-game winning streak. The Suns led by as
many as nine early in the fourth quarter but the Blazers battled
back for the win.

Roblan picked as co-speaker nominee...
Roblan tabbed as House Speaker Nominee
The balance of power is evenly split in the Oregon House of Representatives. With 30 Republicans and 30 Democrats in the chamber, party leaders on both sides are negotiating not only who will be in charge of the upcoming legislative session, but how the various bills are brought to the floor. Typically the party in majority selects one of their own to be the Speaker of the House… that person presides over the session and has a great deal of say over committee appointments, bill placement and other administrative issues. With the 30-30 tie, one proposal being worked out right now is the possibility of co-speakers… one from each party. Coos Bay Democrat Arnie Roblan has been picked by his party as the nominee for speaker or at least co-speaker. Roblan, recently elected to his third term in the Oregon House says he’s fully prepared to work for a plan that will “honor the will” of the majority of all House members. Dave Hunt, the speaker in the last session, will continue as the House Democratic Leader. The session is set to convene January 10th.
Florence City Councilors will sit down beginning at three this afternoon to work on goal setting for the coming year. Mayor Phil Brubaker, Councilors Nola Xavier, Sue Roberts and Paul Holman will all be on the panel again beginning in January. Alan Burns’ term is expiring at the end of this month, his position will be filled by Brian Jagoe, both will participate in today’s session. Department heads for the city met last week to hammer out a list of priorities that will be presented to councilors. Councilors will take a break later this afternoon then resume work at seven for their regular agenda… on tap is swearing in Kelli Weese as the new City Recorder and conducting a hearing on a major revision of the city’s Parks Master Plan.
Police in Newport say a man wanted for the rape of at least five young women in that community has been arrested in Central Oregon and will return to Lincoln County to face charges. Michael Williams was taken into custody by Bend Police without incident over the weekend. He was indicted by a Lincoln County Grand Jury on a dozen counts. He disappeared from the coast earlier this year and is believed to have been in Bend for the past six months.
Oregon’s Dungeness Crab harvest has been certified as “sustainable” by the Marine Stewardship Council. The designation is based on a variety of factors including balancing harvest levels with the ability of the crustaceans to replenish themselves. Oregon’s Dungeness Crab harvest topped 23-million pounds last year and was valued at nearly $45-million.

haven't called her a suspect.

permanently in the Salem mansion provided for Oregon governors.
When the Democrat does stay at Mahonia Hall, The Oregonian reports,

24-year-old neighbor of the Islamic center in Corvallis that was
torched two days after a Somalia-born teenager was charged with a

looking into whether the arson was in retaliation for the alleged
bomb plot.

destroyed a vacant restaurant is suspicious. Albany Fire
spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl says the fire yesterday morning is
consistent with other fires in recent weeks because it involved a

nine vacant homes in Albany have been damaged or destroyed by arson
since Oct. 22.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) - State officials say 17 complaints have
been lodged against firewood dealers so far this year, more than
twice what were filed all of last year. Buyers say some of the wood
doesn't burn well or at all, and some gripe about being sold short
of a full cord. Clark Cooney of the Oregon Department of
Agriculture says he's aware of log dealers scamming those who can
afford it the least.

speech recognition took home the top team prize during a
competition honoring the nation's best math and science students.
Akash Krishnan and Matthew Fernandez of Portland won for developing
a computer algorithm that better recognizes a speaker's emotion.

figure out what damaged more than 40,000 acres of wheat fields in
Umatilla and Morrow counties. Umatilla County growers noticed wheat
fields turning yellow and dying early in November. In Morrow
County, officials say more than 30,000 acres of wheat have plants
with discolored yellow or purple tips that sometimes dry out.

Florence Parks Plan hearing set
Parks Plan Face Lift goes to council
The Florence City Council will hear comments Monday night on what’s being called a major face lift to the city’s parks master plan. After a lengthy process that involved several work sessions earlier this year, as well as hearings at the Planning Commission, the plan will make it’s way to the final decision making body, but not until after they hear from the public. The hearing is set for seven pm Monday at City Hall. Written comments can be submitted at any time before then. The plan is available on the city’s website. Florence Senior Planner Wendy Farley says it identifies some priorities for the future. She says residents want to see more walking trails, a dog park and open spaces. Other important findings that came out of the process include the importance of providing parks programming, upgrades to existing facilities and creating additional funding for parks.
Two of the most important events for Florence Food Share are happening this weekend. First up, beginning this evening, the annual Empty Bowls fund-raiser. More than one-thousand hand-crafted bowls, created by local artists and students will be up for sale. Each bowl comes with a coupon good for a cup of soup at any one of about a dozen participating restaurants. That’s from 5:30 to seven at the Florence Events Center this evening, then again tomorrow from ten until two. That event is expected to generate several thousand dollars in cash for the local food box pantry, while a two-weekend event that begins tomorrow will hopefully bring in as much as 12-thousand pounds of non-perishable food. The Cans for Carriers will have a slightly different look. Postal customers are still being asked to place canned food or other non-perishables out next to their mail boxes tomorrow and next Saturday. Instead of the carriers picking it up however, a cadre of local volunteers will be shadowing them and taking the food directly to Food Share.
Tuesday will be the 69th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Backers of the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum will observe the day with a ‘remembrance’ at Three Rivers Casino and Hotel.
217 – “Well we’re going to have a variety of displays, some of them directly tied to the Pearl Harbor attack or the Day of Infamy as referenced in FDR’s speech of back then.”
Museum board member Cal Applebee says the displays will include a typical living room setup from the early 40s, military vehicles and memorabilia and even a display by tribal members showing wartime contributions made by Native Americans. In addition to the displays there will be some very rare images on display.
218 – “Folks will be able to view some of the slides that were found on a brownie camera a few years ago that have been unseen slides by the public. Some pretty stark images.”
That’s at Three Rivers Casino, Sunday from ten until five… there’s no cost to get in.
The Lane Memorial Blood Bank makes regular visits to Florence with a specially equipped motorhome that has four couches and a cooler. It’s the Blood Mobile and it comes to the coast at least every other month. The next visit is about a week away.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Circuit Court judge in Portland has
denied bail for a man accused of killing his wife and dumping her
body in woods east of the city. Brian Cole has been jailed since he
was arrested July 1 at his home in Sagle, Idaho. His wife, Heather
Mallory, had not been seen since March 8, 2008, when investigators
say she had an argument with Cole at their Portland apartment. Her
skeletal remains were found last June. A trial is now set for
March.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police say a suspicious death
reported early yesterday is being investigated as a homicide. The
victim has been identified as 32-year-old Randy Lee Willard. Lt.
Kelli Sheffer says the Multnomah County medical examiner's office
plans an autopsy today. The body was found after a neighbor
reported hearing loud noises.
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - Police in the Portland suburb of
Hillsboro are trying to determine why four 17-year-old high school
students who know each other became ill. Lt. Mike Rouches says
police suspect the four male Liberty High School students may have
taken some type of drug. Rouches says one student did say he took
brown pills but the teens are not commenting beyond that. The
Oregonian says police found no drugs in a search of the school.
BEND, Ore. (AP) - A month after Election Day, Bend businessman
Scott Ramsay has been declared the winner of a City Council seat --
by just three votes. After more than 30,000 ballots were recounted
by hand, Ramsay's victory margin over fellow businessman Chuck
Arnold grew by just one vote. KTVZ says the final tally was 10,503
votes to 10,500.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Layoffs by three unrelated Oregon
employers will hit more than 200 real estate agents, biotech
workers and manufactured home fabricators. Liberty Homes is
shutting down its plant in Sheridan; ZipRealty is ending its
operations in Oregon; bioMerieux is closing its Wilsonville
facility.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon regulators are endorsing Portland
General Electric's plan to close its coal-fired power plant at
Boardman by Dec. 31, 2020. They decided yesterday that the
guaranteed early closure date justifies a smaller investment in new
pollution controls between now and then.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Department of Justice will
remain in charge of the Umatilla County district attorney's office
during an investigation into alleged misconduct by DA Dean Gushwa.
The state attorney general's office has accused Gushwa of
intimidating and threatening two women he supervised into having
sexual relations with him.

The Florence City Council will hear comments Monday night on what’s being called a major face lift to the city’s parks master plan. After a lengthy process that involved several work sessions earlier this year, as well as hearings at the Planning Commission, the plan will make it’s way to the final decision making body, but not until after they hear from the public. The hearing is set for seven pm Monday at City Hall. Written comments can be submitted at any time before then. The plan is available on the city’s website. Florence Senior Planner Wendy Farley says it identifies some priorities for the future. She says residents want to see more walking trails, a dog park and open spaces. Other important findings that came out of the process include the importance of providing parks programming, upgrades to existing facilities and creating additional funding for parks.
Two of the most important events for Florence Food Share are happening this weekend. First up, beginning this evening, the annual Empty Bowls fund-raiser. More than one-thousand hand-crafted bowls, created by local artists and students will be up for sale. Each bowl comes with a coupon good for a cup of soup at any one of about a dozen participating restaurants. That’s from 5:30 to seven at the Florence Events Center this evening, then again tomorrow from ten until two. That event is expected to generate several thousand dollars in cash for the local food box pantry, while a two-weekend event that begins tomorrow will hopefully bring in as much as 12-thousand pounds of non-perishable food. The Cans for Carriers will have a slightly different look. Postal customers are still being asked to place canned food or other non-perishables out next to their mail boxes tomorrow and next Saturday. Instead of the carriers picking it up however, a cadre of local volunteers will be shadowing them and taking the food directly to Food Share.
Tuesday will be the 69th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Backers of the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum will observe the day with a ‘remembrance’ at Three Rivers Casino and Hotel.
217 – “Well we’re going to have a variety of displays, some of them directly tied to the Pearl Harbor attack or the Day of Infamy as referenced in FDR’s speech of back then.”
Museum board member Cal Applebee says the displays will include a typical living room setup from the early 40s, military vehicles and memorabilia and even a display by tribal members showing wartime contributions made by Native Americans. In addition to the displays there will be some very rare images on display.
218 – “Folks will be able to view some of the slides that were found on a brownie camera a few years ago that have been unseen slides by the public. Some pretty stark images.”

The Lane Memorial Blood Bank makes regular visits to Florence with a specially equipped motorhome that has four couches and a cooler. It’s the Blood Mobile and it comes to the coast at least every other month. The next visit is about a week away.

denied bail for a man accused of killing his wife and dumping her
body in woods east of the city. Brian Cole has been jailed since he
was arrested July 1 at his home in Sagle, Idaho. His wife, Heather
Mallory, had not been seen since March 8, 2008, when investigators
say she had an argument with Cole at their Portland apartment. Her
skeletal remains were found last June. A trial is now set for
March.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police say a suspicious death
reported early yesterday is being investigated as a homicide. The
victim has been identified as 32-year-old Randy Lee Willard. Lt.
Kelli Sheffer says the Multnomah County medical examiner's office
plans an autopsy today. The body was found after a neighbor
reported hearing loud noises.
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - Police in the Portland suburb of
Hillsboro are trying to determine why four 17-year-old high school
students who know each other became ill. Lt. Mike Rouches says
police suspect the four male Liberty High School students may have
taken some type of drug. Rouches says one student did say he took
brown pills but the teens are not commenting beyond that. The
Oregonian says police found no drugs in a search of the school.
BEND, Ore. (AP) - A month after Election Day, Bend businessman
Scott Ramsay has been declared the winner of a City Council seat --
by just three votes. After more than 30,000 ballots were recounted
by hand, Ramsay's victory margin over fellow businessman Chuck
Arnold grew by just one vote. KTVZ says the final tally was 10,503
votes to 10,500.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Layoffs by three unrelated Oregon
employers will hit more than 200 real estate agents, biotech
workers and manufactured home fabricators. Liberty Homes is
shutting down its plant in Sheridan; ZipRealty is ending its
operations in Oregon; bioMerieux is closing its Wilsonville
facility.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon regulators are endorsing Portland
General Electric's plan to close its coal-fired power plant at
Boardman by Dec. 31, 2020. They decided yesterday that the
guaranteed early closure date justifies a smaller investment in new
pollution controls between now and then.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Department of Justice will
remain in charge of the Umatilla County district attorney's office
during an investigation into alleged misconduct by DA Dean Gushwa.
The state attorney general's office has accused Gushwa of
intimidating and threatening two women he supervised into having
sexual relations with him.

Community Colleges finances will be tight - Crabbers reach price agreement - Tracking whales by satellite - State Parks passes

Community Colleges looking at another tough revenue picture
Despite the most recent economic forecast that shows some revival in state revenue collections for the coming year, Lane Community College President Mary Spilde says the funding picture shaping up for the next legislative session remains gloomy.
205 – “It’s not going to be a good situation for any state-funded service. Whether it’s K-12, universities, community colleges or human services, corrections, I think it’s going to be a very very tight budget.”
The current state budget included $417-million for community colleges. That’s after mid-session cuts earlier this year.
206 – “I would be very surprised if the final number is any higher than that and I would not be surprised if it’s a good deal lower.”
Spilde says that will likely result in shortfalls for Lane.
207 – “How we respond to those will be a matter of working through our budget process over the next five or six months to see how we can deal with yet another round of budget reductions.”
Increasing tuition may not be a desirable option this time around. The College already has the highest rate of any of Oregon’s Community Colleges.

Oregon crabbers and processors have reached a price agreement for the opening of the lucrative Dungeness crab season. But, details of the agreement are likely to delay the opening which was scheduled for yesterday. The agreed price was $1.65 a pound, considerably higher than processors opening offer of $1.35… but ten cents lower than last year’s. Crabbers can get an extra two-and-a-half-cents a pound if they wait until December 12th to begin harvesting. Either price is dependent on quality testing. If samples don’t show a high enough density of meat negotiations would start all over again.
An Oregon State University scientist is helping a Russian-U.S. research team track an endangered western gray whale by satellite to learn more about migration routes and breeding grounds. Dr. Bruce Mate is director of the Marine Mammal Institute at OSU. He was a pioneer in the use of satellites to track whales beginning more than 30-years ago. He’s helping a team track the western gray whale off the coast of Russia’s Sakhalin Island. Researchers say there are only about 130 of the creatures remaining… and only about 30 to 35 of those are mature, reproductively active females.
Oregonians will be able to transfer Oregon State Parks Day-Use passes to a second vehicle this year. The state charges fees to access 26-different parks. Daily permits are $5 each, but annual passes are $30. Recreation Programs Manager Richard Walkoski says the transferable feature makes it good bargain. Adding to the value… the annual passes are on sale through the end of the year for $25. They can be purchased locally at the Honeyman State Park office on Highway 101 three miles south of Florence.

with a kidnapping and assault that included strapping a teenager
into a wheelchair and beating him. The Mail Tribune reported
yesterday that 33-year-old Nicholas Jackson of Medford and
30-year-old Kekai Kuehu of Ashland were being held at the Jackson
County Jail.
NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - Police have identified a body found on the
rocks of the Yaquina Bay jetty as that of 59-year-old John Delude
of Newport. The Coast Guard spotted the body on Monday. Newport
police responded. They are working to determine how the man died.
Police tell The Oregonian it appeared the body had been in the
water for some time.
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - The Linn County sheriff says a body found
last January in the Santiam Lebanon Canal has been identified as
56-year-old Rickey Dee Garber of Lebanon. Sheriff Tim Mueller said
yesterday the body was badly decomposed when found and bore no
identifying marks. Authorities say the body showed no evidence of
foul play.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Lawyers have wrapped up their defense for the
older half of a father-son duo accused of an Oregon bank bombing
that killed two police officers in 2008. Bruce Turnidge's lawyers
rested their case yesterday. Lawyers for Turnidge's 34-year-old
son, Joshua, presented their case earlier. Closing arguments are
expected Monday.
JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) - An Army sergeant from
Portland charged with shooting at unarmed Afghans has pleaded
guilty in a deal that requires him to testify against other
defendants. Staff Sgt. Robert Stevens admitted to aggravated
assault and other charges at his court-martial yesterday.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A former Nike executive has pleaded guilty
to filing a false federal tax return and failing to declare more
than $20,000 in travelers checks when returning from South Korea.
Federal prosecutors say Ronald Hartfeil of Oregon City will be
sentenced March 8.

laws aimed at curbing gun violence, but critics question whether
the ordinances are constitutional and say they may unfairly target
young blacks. The laws are a result of a resurgence in gang
violence in the past two years.

Postal Food Drive this weekend - gas steady - Our Town to look at LCC - Kiwanis Candy
Mail Food Drive to go on as planned…
When Karen Lyn found out that mail carriers would not be picking up food in the annual “cans for carriers” food drive this year, she didn’t panic. But, was concerned.
204 – “We, um, feel like this is too important of a food drive in too important of a year to let it go.”
Mail carriers said it was just too difficult to handle the increased mail delivery this time of year along with the added chore of collecting as much as 12-thousand pounds of food. So, Lyn, the manager of Florence Food Share came up with a solution.
205 – “This year the Florence post office is sponsoring the drive, but Food Share volunteers are actually picking up the food. This is our absolutely biggest food drive of the year and we really need the food.”
But, Lyn says, they need volunteers to shadow mail carriers both this Saturday and next Saturday, following them on their route and picking up donations that have been left by mailboxes. She says the collections during the postal drive can help stock shelves at Food Share well into the new year.
206 – “And that helps us really go for a while. It helps us a lot. So, we have to. We have to get the food.”
The largest food drive of the year also coincides with the largest fund drive for Food Share… the annual Empty Bowls fund raiser is set for Friday evening and Saturday at the Florence Events Center.
Lane Community College has had a dynamic presence in Florence over the years. Beginning with a ‘skills center’ in borrowed space at Siuslaw High School it eventually moved into a free-standing facility. Recent expansion and improvements to the center include a state of the art science lab and a new ‘smart’ classroom. Once focused on vocational and adult education classes, it now offers opportunities for a variety of accomplishments, including an Associate of Arts Transfer Degree and medical services training… even nursing. This afternoon’s Our Town on KCST will focus on what’s in store next for the center. Also during the program, there’ll be a look at the Lane Memorial Blood Bank; the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum and the annual Community Christmas Basket project… the show airs on KCST from four to six pm.
Prices at the pump haven’t shown much movement this week. The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded, as measured by Triple-A, dropped a cent-and-a-half this week and is at $2.85. The local average fell by a similar amount and is at $2.83 a gallon. Oregon’s Average price, according to Triple-A, held steady at $3.01. In Eugene, the average price is $3.06.
One local service organization had been gearing up to begin their annual Christmas Candy Sale today… But you’ll have to wait until Saturday for some See’s Candy. Once again, the Florence Kiwanis Club will be selling See’s inside the Sears Store across from Safeway. Candy will be available from ten to six Monday through Saturday… 11 to four Sundays… through Christmas Eve… or until they run out.

shot a man during a coffee stand robbery in Eugene. The coffee shop

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Steady rain did little to keep residents
in the Oregon town of Corvallis from showing their support for an
Islamic center where a teenager accused of plotting mass killings
in Portland occasionally worshipped. More than 300 people attended
a vigil yesterday at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center, where an
apparent arson fire was set two days after 19-year-old Mohamed
Osman Mohamud was arrested in Portland in an FBI terrorism sting
operation.
INDEPENDENCE, Calif. (AP) - Rescue crews are searching by ground
and by air for a hiker from Oregon who's missing in the wilderness
near California's Mt. Whitney. Inyo County sheriff's spokeswoman
Carma Roper says 37-year-old Christian Meining of Portland has not
been seen since Friday morning.
NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) - The Yamhill County sheriff's office says it
has suspended the search for a Newberg man believed to have
disappeared last Friday while fishing on the Willamette River.
Sheriff's Capt. Ken Summers cited poor weather, rising water levels
and the risk to divers as the search ended yesterday for
49-year-old Kevin Troy Williams.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland man has been sentenced to more
than 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of
unarmed bank robbery. James Michael Wallace had just been released
from a 12-year federal prison stay for bank robbery when
investigators say he began to rob again.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon may face summer water shortages,
an increased wildfire risk and more extreme weather events if
temperatures keep warming up. That from a new report examining
potential responses to an Oregon climate that may increase in
average temperature by up to one degree Fahrenheit per decade
through this century.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A new study shows the recession hit the
Portland metro area harder than many other big cities around the
world. The Oregonian reports Portland fell from a pre-recession
rank of 45th to 139th during the worst of the recession, one of the
steepest declines among the 150 metros in the survey.

205 – “This year the Florence post office is sponsoring the drive, but Food Share volunteers are actually picking up the food. This is our absolutely biggest food drive of the year and we really need the food.”
But, Lyn says, they need volunteers to shadow mail carriers both this Saturday and next Saturday, following them on their route and picking up donations that have been left by mailboxes. She says the collections during the postal drive can help stock shelves at Food Share well into the new year.

Once focused on vocational and adult education classes, it now offers opportunities for a variety of accomplishments, including an Associate of Arts Transfer Degree and medical services training… even nursing. This afternoon’s Our Town on KCST will focus on what’s in store next for the center. Prices at the pump haven’t shown much movement this week. The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded, as measured by Triple-A, dropped a cent-and-a-half this week and is at $2.85. The local average fell by a similar amount and is at $2.83 a gallon. Oregon’s Average price, according to Triple-A, held steady at $3.01. In Eugene, the average price is $3.06.
One local service organization had been gearing up to begin their annual Christmas Candy Sale today… But you’ll have to wait until Saturday for some See’s Candy. and by air for a hiker from Oregon who's missing in the wilderness
near California's Mt. Whitney. Inyo County sheriff's spokeswoman
Carma Roper says 37-year-old Christian Meining of Portland has not
been seen since Friday morning.
NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) - The Yamhill County sheriff's office says it
has suspended the search for a Newberg man believed to have
disappeared last Friday while fishing on the Willamette River.
Sheriff's Capt. Ken Summers cited poor weather, rising water levels
and the risk to divers as the search ended yesterday for
49-year-old Kevin Troy Williams.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland man has been sentenced to more
than 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of
unarmed bank robbery. James Michael Wallace had just been released
from a 12-year federal prison stay for bank robbery when
investigators say he began to rob again.

an increased wildfire risk and more extreme weather events if
temperatures keep warming up. That from a new report examining
potential responses to an Oregon climate that may increase in
average temperature by up to one degree Fahrenheit per decade
through this century.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A new study shows the recession hit the
Portland metro area harder than many other big cities around the
world. The Oregonian reports Portland fell from a pre-recession
rank of 45th to 139th during the worst of the recession, one of the

A combination of dwindling finances and reduced workload has prompted the City of Florence to combine positions and shift office locations at City Hall. When the former City Recorder, Pat Heinze, gave her notice earlier this month, it created an opportunity to combine some job duties. Kelli Weese has been handling technical and mapping functions in the planning department for the past 2 ½ years. She’ll hang on to those responsibilities, plus add the title of City Recorder. Community Development Director Sandra Belson says building permit functions will move back to the ground floor at City Hall, allowing one person to handle those duties as well as pick up additional planning responsibilities. Belson said in an unrelated decision, after almost 16 years at City Hall, Lane County will be moving building and electrical inspection services to the county’s public works shop on 20th street. That means private residents outside the city needing electrical and building permits must now go to Eugene. Contractors can use an online system.
After more than four years and $1.6-million the new longhouse on Lane Community College main campus is set to open. Officials will conduct a grand opening ceremony Friday morning, and show off the 6,200 square foot building, dedicated for the use of Native American students and community members. It’s only the second Native American longhouse to open at a community college nationally. It’s built of fir and cedar log beams, hand-hewn cedar planking and plenty of skylights. The centerpiece of the hall is the ‘great room’… a large open space framed by rough-hewn logs. Next to that is the Hall of Honor, a small rotunda with a display case for each of the nine federally recognized tribes in Oregon.

Backers of the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum will put together a series of temporary displays depicting life in the United States as it likely was on December 7th and 8th as America was recovering from the Great Depression and preparing for war. It’s part of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day this Sunday, December Fifth at Three Rivers Casino and Hotel. There’s no admission charge… the displays will be open from ten to five.
Expect delays on Highway 101 over the Siuslaw River today as crews attempt to wrap up work on leveling the draw spans in preparation for new lock assemblies. Final work had been scheduled for last week but snow and ice prompted delay. Delays of ten to 15 minutes are expected across the bridge today between one and five.

37-year-old James Charles Tooley should get the death penalty.
SEATTLE (AP) - Several fishing and conservation groups are suing
the EPA for failing to limit the use of six agricultural pesticides
to protect salmon. A lawsuit filed in federal court in Seattle on
Monday alleges the EPA has not taken action on measures that NOAA
Fisheries Service called for in 2008 and 2009.

of Portland's Muslim community and city leaders focused on security
concerns after last week's foiled bomb plot. Mayor Sam Adams says
he urged Muslims to call police about any possible threats to their
community centers or mosques.
VIDA, Ore. (AP) - Lane County, Oregon, officials have received a
$2 million federal transportation grant to fix up one of the
state's best-known covered bridges.
The Register-Guard reports that the Goodpasture covered bridge
near Vida has been limited to vehicles of under 15 tons since
engineers discovered broken and deteriorated sections in its timber
trusses and substructure. The grant will pay to fix those problems,
allowing normal traffic of up to 40 tons.
The 165-foot bridge was built in 1938 across the McKenzie River.
With its architectural detail it's one of the most photographed of
Oregon's 50 covered bridges. Officials say repairs could begin by
2012 and be completed within a year.

Saturday’s show will begin airing at six am and runs three hours. Fans are encouraged to attend. University officials say the quad will be open at 4:30 Saturday morning. Three and a half hours after ESPN GameDay concludes its show, the Beavers will be looking to upset number one Oregon at 12:30. This will be fourth time the Beavers have been a part of GameDay, but the first time they will host it. GameDay has aired from Eugene four times.

FBI says there was no danger in Portland bombing attempt - Peace Harbor Hospice to light up a life 12/11 - Crabbers working on price negotiations
FBI Tipped off to investigate alleged bombing attempt
A Somali-born naturalized U.S. Citizen will be in a Portland courtroom this afternoon facing terrorism charges after a failed bombing attempt Friday night. FBI officials say they began investigating Mohamed Osman Mohamud after receiving a tip in June. Mohamud dialed a cell phone during a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Portland and was immediately arrested by authorities. He thought the call was going to detonate a bomb in a van parked nearby. FBI agents said it wasn’t a bomb, it was dummy explosives they had supplied to the Corvallis teen. The claim Mohamud planned every aspect of the attempt, including where to place the van for “maximum casualties”. In a separate incident over the weekend, the Corvallis Mosque attended occasionally by Mohamud was the target of what officials are saying was an arson-caused blaze.
Peace Harbor Hospice will host their annual “Light Up a Life Celebration” Saturday December 11th at the Florence Events Center. Hospice Director Glen Thelin says in addition to being a fund raiser, it’s a time to remember friends and family members who have passed away in the previous year.
210 – “For each donation they get a star. There’s a celebration that’s an hour and a half, Saturday December 11th. Those stars are then placed on a holiday tree at the Florence Events Center and during the celebration there’s a reading of those names.”

Negotiations between commercial crabbers and processors were suspended late last week after the two sides failed to agree on an opening price for the season set to open this week. Crabbers are seeking $1.75 a pound, the same price they received to begin the season last year. However, processors are seeking lower prices. Further talks are expected this week… crabbers can begin pulling pots Wednesday. The majority of the catch is usually sold during the month of December.
Nearly 200 pounds of turkey, along with all the trimmings were served up Thanksgiving Day as about 260 people enjoyed the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Organizer Kathleen Forbes said about 40 volunteers, mostly Kiwanis Club Members, set up, prepared and served the dinner that was open to everyone.

charged with murder. He's being held at Lane County Jail.

named Eldon Trinity. The Oregonian says now-8-year-old Trinity will
help dedicate it on Dec. 7.

Despite clinching a second straight Pac-10 Championship and at the least a guaranteed return to the Rose Bowl the Oregon Ducks have their sights set higher. Oregon trailed at the half Friday night against Arizona, but took the lead for good on an 85-yard touchdown run by Josh Huff and rolled to a 48-29 win in Eugene. The latest BCS Rankings dropped The Ducks to number two behind Auburn… just two-ten thousandths of a point separate the two teams.
Stanford moved up to number four in the BCS rankings after throttling Oregon State 38-nothing in Palo Alto Saturday evening. Andrew Luck threw four touchdown passes to set a single-season school record. The loss leaves the Beavers at 5-and-6 overall with one game remaining to become bowl eligible… that’s Saturday afternoon at Reser Stadium against the number two ranked Oregon Ducks.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Nets scored a 98-96 win over
Portland last night, the Trail Blazers' third straight loss. The
two teams traded the lead five times during the fourth quarter,
before Devon Harris hit a three-pointer with 1:11 to go. Reserve
Wesley Matthews scored 25 points for the Blazers.

College Football:
Despite clinching a second straight Pac-10 Championship and at the least a guaranteed return to the Rose Bowl the Oregon Ducks have their sights set higher. Oregon trailed at the half Friday night against Arizona, but took the lead for good on an 85-yard touchdown run by Josh Huff and rolled to a 48-29 win in Eugene. The latest BCS Rankings dropped The Ducks to number two behind Auburn… just two-ten thousandths of a point separate the two teams.
Stanford moved up to number four in the BCS rankings after throttling Oregon State 38-nothing in Palo Alto Saturday evening. Andrew Luck threw four touchdown passes to set a single-season school record. The loss leaves the Beavers at 5-and-6 overall with one game remaining to become bowl eligible… that’s Saturday afternoon at Reser Stadium against the number two ranked Oregon Ducks.
College Basketball:
Kyle Singler had 30 points and five rebounds to lead Number One Duke to a 98-71 victory over Oregon Saturday afternoon at the Rose Garden in Portland. Singler’s younger brother E.J. Singler scored 14 points, all in the second half for Oregon.
Oregon State survived a lackluster first half in Washington DC and used a 17-2 second half run to pull away from Howard University 84-74 Saturday.
