Bear the cold a couple more days; A Washington woman is walking to NYC out of gratittude; SHS students in cold water so others can drink fresh H2O.

Cold air to stick around a couple more days…

Overnight low temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing for at least the next two nights according to the National Weather Service. An arctic air mass has settled over the Northwest bringing very cold temperatures. The coast will be the only place in the state with temperatures above freezing until at least Friday when a warmer… and wetter… system is expected to arrive. With weather like this frozen pipes are always possible and Don Moore with Integrity Plumbing has some tips that can help prevent some costly damage. If you haven’t already done this, you may be too late, but better safe than sorry. Disconnect your outside hoses; cover crawl space vents under the house and open the cupboard doors under the sink. That will help keep freezing air out and warmer air in. If your pipes are prone for freezing… leave a faucet on, running slowly when you get to bed.
200 – “A lake will freeze, a river won’t, you know, you got running water it keeps flow through your pipes and prevents freezing that way.”

Most newer homes, he says, have adequate insulation, but don’t take anything for granted. If your pipes do freeze, try to get warm air to it as soon as possible… a space heater placed carefully in the crawl space or some ‘heat tape’ around it. Moore says warm it slowly and never use and open flame such as a torch to thaw pipes.

A Washington woman is in the midst of a walk from Seattle to Los Angeles… and then from there to New York City. Jeana Moore is spreading the word about how easy it is to register as a bone marrow donor.
206 – “My granddaughter was born with acute myloid leukemia. She had a bone marrow transplant at seven months old. She had one match in the world, a 30-year old man from Germany. We’re fortunate that he had a cheek swab so that he could be identified as a match for our data.”

Moore, of Deer Park, Washington says her granddaughter, Jada Bascom is now a health and happy 2 ½ year old because of that match. The family formed a foundation to help raise awareness of the issue and Moore began her walk. She left Seattle October 19th and has covered 380 miles, enrolling 195 new donors and setting up 39 bone marrow drives along the way. Mapleton Fire Fighters put her up for the night Saturday and she’s spending a couple days in Florence courtesy of Western Lane Ambulance. Moore expects to resume her walk Wednesday morning. Information on registering as a bone marrow donor can be found at their website… www.stepstomarrow.com.

There’s a group of students at Siuslaw High School that are hoping for a warming trend by this weekend. But, says John Johnson, that won’t stop them from taking a plunge in Woahink Lake on Saturday morning.
202 – “We’re hoping it’s not too cold. We’re going at nine in the morning so it’s probably going to be pretty chilly, but we’re looking forward to it. We think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Johnson says they’ll be in cold water so others can have fresh water. He’s hoping to have 100 people, at $5 each, lined up on the third bridge on Canary Road to help raise money.
203 – “It’s called Charity Water which digs wells in countries that do not have fresh water available and so this money will be going directly to them.”

The ultimate goal, he says, is to raise $5,000 over the next two months and by doing that they’ll be able to secure a permanent source of drinking water for an entire village. Johnson says you don’t have to get wet to help out.
204 – “I have a feeling there’ll be quite a few people watching. We’re taking donations also, if you want to be a part of it but watch.”

The ‘Polar Bear’ club is open to community members as well as students. To sign up, stop by the high school at lunch time all this week or show up on Canary Road before nine Saturday in your bathing suit… and bring five bucks.

TAKING A LOOK INTO COAST RADIO SPORTS:

Prep Basketball:

Things got underway on the court last night for the Siuslaw Vikings… the Coquille Red Devils came to town and left with a pair of victories. First up in the girls’ game it was Coquille 54 – Siuslaw 25. The Red Devils posted a 37 – 26 victory in the boys’ matchup. Eric Tipler led scoring for the Vikings with 11 points.

On the Schedule:

There’s more prep basketball at Siuslaw as the Vikings host the Bandon Tigers for boys and girls action. Airtime is set for 5:45 with the girls tipping off at six… the boys at around 7:30.

College Football:

Oregon head coach Chip Kelly has accomplished something that hasn’t been done for 15 years in Eugene… he’s taking his team to a Rose Bowl and was also named Pac-10 Coach of the Year. The last Oregon head coach to do both was Rich Brooks in 1994. Brooks also won Coach of the Year honors in 1979. One Oregon player made the all-Pac-10 first team, Ed Dickson picked up that honor, but Oregon State placed the most on the list with seven: Quarterback Sean Canfield; Jacquizz and James Rodgers; Gregg Peat; Stephen Paea (PIE-uh); Keaton Kristick; and Suaesi Tuimaunei (SOO-uh-ESS-ee TOO-ah-MONN-ee).
