A law aimed at saving taxpayers $6-million by reducing the prison time of nonviolent offenders has unwittingly freed hundreds of violent inmates. The Oregonian in Portland examined state corrections data and found nearly 800 of the 2,397 inmates approved for reduced sentences went to prison for serious crimes such as robbery, arson and attempted murder… or had previous convictions for crimes against people. The law, passed by the 2009 Legislature, was intended to make low-risk prisoners eligible for a ten-percent reduction in their sentences. One of the backers of that measure,, Democratic state Senator Floyd Prozanski (pro-ZONN-skee) now says he wants to revise the measure during the February special session.

The body of an unidentified adult male was found on the beach late last week just north of Yachats. Officials say it appeared the body had been in the water for several days but there was no ID. Lt. Gregg Hastings with the Oregon State Police says it’s not known whether or not the body is of one of two fishermen missing since November 18th. Family members and friends of one of the two, Nicky Lutz have planned a memorial service for two PM, Saturday December 19th at Siuslaw High School. Lutz and his boss, Bill Bodewig left to go surf-fishing and never returned. It’s presumed they were swept from the rocks south of Yachats by heavy surf.

The National Weather Service says an arctic front moved into the Northwest yesterday through British Columbia. The cold air mass brought nighttime low temperatures in the teens in the interior portions of the state and lows in the upper 20s along the coast. Daytime highs are expected to remain in the lower 30s today and drop as low as 21 tonight. Along with the cold, gusty east-northeast winds of up to 40 miles an hour are bringing wind chill values significantly lower.
