Bridge work nearing completion - Two national champions, school superintendent and Relay for Life on Our Town - gas holding steady

Bridge work nearly complete…

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Well, actually the end of the bridge. Work on several different highway bridges in Western Lane County is nearing completion and traffic on Highway 126 and on 101 across the Siuslaw River should soon be back to normal. The $5.3 million electrical and mechanical renovation on the 101 bridge is nearly complete. Only a few ‘punchlist’ items remain to be cleared up. East of Florence, on Highway 126, construction of two bridges has been completed. Workers will begin dismantling the detour structures and installing the final touches this month. Later this summer crews will begin repairs on the Wildcat Bridge, five miles west of Walton. Traffic will be flagged one-way through that area during work. A final bridge project a mile west of Green Hill Road on 126 near Eugene is still underway. When that’s complete however, motorists on the Florence-Eugene highway should have clear sailing. The bridge projects have been funded by the Oregon Transportation Reinvestment act and are part of a $53.4-million effort to replace six bridges and repair two others in Lane and Douglas Counties.

A pair of students from Siuslaw High School recently proved themselves to be more capable than anyone else the country, at least in one particular field. Keenan Bishop and Chase Ellison completed a written test, then gleaned information from a ‘mock-interview’ and correctly interpreted an autopsy report to claim the national championship in the forensic medicine category at the Health Occupations Students of America national conference. Bishop, Ellison and eight other students competed at Orlando, Florida last month. The champions, along with their instructor Kathy Haberly will be on this afternoon’s KCST’s Our Town to talk about their experiences. Also on the program: Mapleton minister Joe Brown who has been making the trek to Tijuana, Mexico six to ten times each year for 50-years. He has been ministering and providing aid to the thousands of people who are so poor they are forced to live in a garbage dump. KCST’s Our Town will also include a conversation with Siuslaw School Superintendent Jeff Davis, talk about expanding the number of foreign exchange students and the upcoming American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The show airs from four to six pm this afternoon on KCST.

The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline held steady in Florence for the sixth week running. It’s at $2.81 this week, compared with Oregon’s average price, as measured by Triple-A of Oregon, which held steady at $2.90. The national average price dropped three cents this week to $2.72.

The tidepools near Cape Perpetua, just south of Yachats are regarded by some as some of the best on the Oregon Coast. That’s according to Cape Perpetua Visitor’s Center manager Lori Robertson who says the pools offer a unique habitat for a variety of species. Some of the lowest tides of the summer will be occurring next week so the center will be hosting a special week of exploring life on the rocks. Interpreters will be stationed at the tidepools during early morning low tides all next week to help provide a close-up view of the unique plant and animal life that resides there.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

HARBOR, Ore. (AP) - The Curry County sheriff says a mobile home
park fire in the southern Oregon coastal town of Harbor destroyed
five mobile homes and killed one man. The Oregonian reports that a
40-year-old man was unaccounted for and deputies later found the
remains of a man in the trailer house where he lived.

were arraigned Tuesday on federal charges alleging they set at
least eight range fires on federal lands going back to the 1980s.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A youth soccer coach from Eastern Oregon has
been sentenced to two years in federal prison on charges of selling
methamphetamine in Oregon and Idaho. Martin Romero Mendoza of

people arrested last year in a crackdown on drug trafficking
between eastern Oregon and the Boise area.

DEPOE BAY, Ore. (AP) - A Depoe Bay Fire District spokesman says
a 52-year-old man was trapped under a recreational vehicle when the
supports he was using to lift it for repairs collapsed. Before fire
crews could arrive yesterday, neighbors raised the vehicle with
hydraulic jacks to help the man breathe more easily. Firefighters
then used air bags to lift the vehicle and free the man, who was
taken to a hospital in Lincoln City. The extent of the man's
injuries was not immediately known.

CRATER LAKE, Ore. (AP) - Visitors to Crater Lake National Park
can now take in the sights aboard a natural gas-fueled trolley car,
rather than driving their own cars. The Herald and News reports the
tours were offered over the Fourth of July weekend and are
continuing through the summer to reduce congestion and pollution
from cars driving around the nation's deepest and clearest lake.

TAKING A LOOK INTO COAST RADIO SPORTS:

American Legion Baseball:
Tristan Metcalf started things off with a three-run homerun in the first inning, giving the Three Rivers Sandblasters an early lead. Michael Bennett added a two-run shot, as did Nick Cannaday who was five-for-six overall. But, Richey’s Market came from behind, capitalizing on a half dozen ‘Blasters errors and coming out on top 18 – 16 last night in Corvallis.

The ‘Blasters will be back on the diamond this afternoon at home against the Roseburg Doc Stewarts. That game starts at five but will be joined in progress immediately following KCST’s Our Town.

Northwest League Baseball:
Another one got away from the Emeralds. Eugene held a 3-2 lead going into the ninth inning last night at home, but a walk, three Everett hits and one Eugene error turned into four runs and a 6-3 win for the Aqua-Sox. It was Eugene’s third straight loss. They have today off and will open up tomorrow night in Boise against the Hawks.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - After a chilly, wet spring, hot weather is
arriving this week in Oregon. The National Weather Service has
