Fireworks and celebration every where you turn. No viewing from transient dock. 20-year old murder solved. Crime report mapping available

Fireworks and the Fourth of July every where you turn…

If you work it right, you can see more than one fireworks display, go to several picnics and take in a breakfast or two this weekend. In Florence, the public fireworks display will be fired off the barge in the middle of the Siuslaw River Sunday at 10 PM on the Fourth. Prior to that, there’ll be a raft of activities going on in town starting with a brunch at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. There’ll be a classic car show and chicken barbecue at the Florence Elks Lodge in the afternoon, along with a watermelon and pie eating contest in Historic Old Town at one. The Great Kiwanis Duck Race will happen at two; the Florence-Siuslaw Lions club will be selling hot dogs all afternoon; then later in the evening there’ll be a free concert on the boardwalk. If you need more than one night of fireworks… you can start tonight in Eugene at the Eugene Pro Rodeo. They’ll offer another show tomorrow night as well, or you can go to North Bend’s Mill Casino. Alternative shows on the central coast or in Lane County will be offered up on the fourth in Gardiner, at P-K Park in Eugene following the Emeralds game and in Newport. Fireworks will also shine over downtown Coos Bay to wrap up the Mingus Park Family Fun Day.

Port of Siuslaw officials had initially said there would be limited fireworks viewing opportunities from the new transient dock below the Maple Street Landing. But now, citing safety concerns, they’ve announced it will be closed Sunday evening. Port manager Mark Freeman said a combination of circumstances, including darkness, a swift moving current and the proximity of the dredge working in the area pose too much of a risk.

Florence residents can get up to date information on crimes reported in their neighborhoods by accessing an online service provided by the Florence Police Department. Chief Maury Sanders says his agency is taking advantage of a free 12-month trial offered by crime reports dot com that actually maps the location and type of crime reports filed. The service is available at the department’s website, florencepolice-dot-net. Sanders hopes it will strengthen connections between police and the community. No personal information is offered online, only the type of crime report, the date and approximate location.

A 20-year old missing person case came in from the cold this week when a 40-year old Prineville man was indicted on murder and manslaughter charges in Lincoln County for the death of then 16-year old Walter Thomas Ackerson. Troy August Culver, of Prineville, was assigned to the Angell Job Corps site near Yachats in the spring of 1990. The two were drinking beer in Newport March 24th of that year and Culver assaulted Ackerson. Culver and two others dumped Ackerson’s body off the Yaquina Bay Bridge and returned to Yachats. Ackerson was listed as a runaway for 20-years.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

GRASS VALLEY, Ore. (AP) - A Washington state woman faces
multiple charges after Oregon State Police say she pulled out a
.40-caliber handgun and fired shots after she'd been handcuffed and
placed in the back seat of a police car. Twenty-four-year-old
Candice Sahme of Yakima, Wash., was arrested early yesterday after
a standoff.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - A man accused of shooting at a
Josephine County sheriff's deputy and his dog outside Grants Pass
last week has been arrested. Authorities say Kelly L. Mason was
arrested late Wednesday near Kerby after deputies got a series of
tips and staked out his campsite. Mason surrendered without
incident.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon couple who belong to a faith
healing church have been ordered to surrender their child for
medical treatment. Yesterday Clackamas County Circuit Judge Douglas
Van Dyk gave the state of Oregon temporary custody of the child of
Timothy Wyland and Rebecca Wyland. They are members of the
Followers of Christ church, which relies on faith-healing rituals
to treat illness.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - State police have arrested a 55-year-old
hitchhiker accused of robbing two Portland teenagers who stopped to
pick him up on Interstate 5 in southwest Oregon. A 17-year-old boy
and a 15-year-old girl told police the hitchhiker stole a purse and
threatened to shoot them after they gave him a lift early
Wednesday.

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Scientists from Oregon State University and other universities have returned to the Gulf of Mexico to study the oil spill's effects on whales and other endangered animals. Tags, tissue samples, and sound are among the methods that the scientific crew on the NOAA research ship will use to study
sperm whale and Bryde's (BRU-des) whales.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police say they're taking another
look at the sexual assault allegation against Al Gore because the
department's brass didn't review a decision last year not to press
forward with an investigation. Chief Michael Reese yesterday
elaborated on the department's decision to reopen the case that
began in 2006. A massage therapist has alleged that Gore repeatedly
groped and kissed her during a late-night session at a downtown
hotel.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Conservation groups are trying to stop
federal wildlife agents from carrying out a state kill order on two
wolves in northeastern Oregon that are blamed for killing cattle.
Their lawsuit filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Portland
argues that the federal agency Wildlife Services should have
studied the environmental impacts of killing two out of the 14
wolves believed to be in Oregon.
