Corps of Engineers warns about jetties - Cost of driving to go up - Douglas County assumes Umpqua Lighthouse

Army Corps of Engineers issues jetty warning…

Witnesses watched in horror last month as waves washed a young couple off the South Jetty of Yaquina Bay in Newport. Kathryn and Michael Meyers of Portland had been celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary with a trip to the coast. Both drowned. Two years earlier it was two young men, one lived… the other did not. Eric Bluhm (bloom) is a project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of engnineers, which build jetties… the long rocky structures that help ocean going vessels navigate safely from harbor to seas. Bluhm understands their appeal to beach walkers who want to be closer to the waves. But the Army Corps and Oregon State police are spreading the word… Jetties can be dangerous, even on a nice day.

Operation and maintenance of the distinctive red and white beacon of the Umpqua Lighthouse near Winchester Bay has been officially assumed by the Douglas County Parks department. The light was first lit October 10th, 1857, however it was abandoned seven years later because of unstable footings and the tower actually collapsed a few weeks later. A new light was erected on the present site 30-years later and was lit December 31st, 1894. The U.S. Coast Guard automated operations in the 1960s and continued to operate it until it was determined to be no longer necessary for navigation last year. Rather than see it decommissioned, Douglas County stepped in to assume responsibility earlier this year… the transfer was finalized this week.

It’s going to get more expensive to fill up your gas tank in Oregon after the first of the year. The Oregon legislature, in 2009, approved an increase in gas taxes from 24 to 30 cents per gallon. The hike was tied to economic growth at the time… it wouldn’t become effective until two consecutive quarters of job growth were recorded… that still hasn’t happened, but lawmakers also required that it take effect no later than January First, 2011. The higher tax is expected to add about $30 a year to the average driver’s fuel cost.

If the weather cooperates Monday night, residents in the Pacific Northwest will be able to see a complete eclipse of the moon. Just a few hours before the Winter Solstice, the full moon will move into the shadow of the earth. Lee Dawson, Communications Director for OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, says the “penumbral” eclipse, when the moon moves into the shadow of earth’s atmosphere will begin just before 9:30 Monday evening. The full eclipse itself will begin at 11:40 PM and last for 73 minutes. All effects of the eclipse will be done by 3:04. Dawson says if you miss this one, there’ll be another one exactly one year later.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A man whom Eugene police shot and wounded
after a report of shots fired in a mall parking lot is in critical
condition. Police have identified the man as 27-year-old Michael
Thomas Mason. KVAL-TV says he's the son of a former Eugene police
sergeant who retired in 2003. The Register-Guard says Mason is an
Army veteran who served in Afghanistan.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland fire officials say a boat
participating in the Christmas Ship Parade caught fire last night
at Riverplace Marina on the Willamette River. The five people
aboard escaped safely. KGW-TV says the boat's owner suffered smoke
inhalation but wasn't seriously hurt. Investigators say a leaking
line from a gas can to a generator sparked the fire.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A man whose home was searched after an arson
fire at an Oregon mosque has been charged with disorderly conduct
in an unrelated case. McMinnville police say they arrested
24-year-old Cody Crawford two days earlier. McMinnville is 40 miles
north of Crawford's home in Corvallis. Crawford lives near a mosque
sometimes attended by the teen arrested in an FBI sting on charges
of trying to bomb a Portland Christmas celebration.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man has been charged with arson in
a fire that destroyed the American Legion Hall in Albany last July.
Albany police say they arrested 40-year-old Trent Allen Fox while
he was walking along a highway in Albany. He's being held at the
Linn County Jail. Police are asking the public for information
about Fox or related to the investigation.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - Fire investigators are at the scene of an
overnight fire that may have grown from two separate fires in
adjacent buildings on the Astoria waterfront. The blaze has
consumed a cafe and damaged an adjacent building but no one has
been seriously hurt.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Sen. Ron Wyden says he has prostate cancer
and will undergo surgery next week. The Oregon Democrat said in a
statement yesterday the cancer is in its early stage and that he
expects "a full and speedy recovery." The surgery is scheduled
Monday at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - On the night after Thanksgiving, Jim Newby
was driving home near Eugene when for some reason, he made one turn
20 feet too soon and plowed into a large pond. Paul Yost and Jennah
Litecky of Junction City saw what happened and Yost -- a former
lifeguard -- waded to the car and rescued the 83-year-old Newby.
Reunited this week, Newby said there's no doubt that Yost saved his
life.
