Plenty of openings on local boards and commissions - snow? - Christmas Tree pickup - Taste of the sea at aquarium

Year end vacancies on boards and commissions provide chance for community involvement…

There are plenty of chances for residents in and around Florence and Dunes City to get involved with local government without having to run for elected office. Applications are still being sought for openings on a variety of boards and commissions in the two cities. In Florence there are four openings on the planning commission. One position has been vacant since July when longtime commissioner Chris Atkins moved away from the community. Three more terms expire on January 31st. Mark Tilton, the sole representative on the panel from outside city limits says he’s already reapplied but the other two… longtime commissioners Clarence Lysdale and Jan Nieberlein say they’re still pondering whether or not. Both indicated that they were inclined to not reapply but would reconsider if there were insufficient applicants. Florence has openings on the Environmental Management advisory committee, Florence Events Center Advisory panel, and Airport Advisory Committee. In Dunes City there are openings on the Planning, Roads and Parks and Recreation Commissions as well as a half dozen other committees. Applications can be submitted to each respective city hall by the end of next week.

Heavy rains that began last night, brought by a warm and wet weather system could cause river levels to begin rising in many coastal streams. That rain could begin turning to snow in elevations above 500 feet in the Coast Range according to the National Weather Service. Accumulations of snow near 500 feet are expected to be about one inch, with up to three inches possible at higher elevations before drier weather begins moving into the area by Thursday.

Firefighters with Siuslaw Valley Fire And Rescue will be out tomorrow with a mid-week Christmas tree pickup, the first of three scheduled over the next ten days. Siuslaw Valley Fire Marshall Sean Barrett says by this time trees may have been inside living rooms for as much as three or four weeks and can become a real fire hazard. Volunteers will pickup the trees tomorrow, Sunday January 2nd and then again on Saturday the eighth. A minimum donation of $5 is requested. All trees will be recycled. To schedule a pickup, call Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue during regular business hours.

It’s “fisheries day” tomorrow at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. That institution has teamed up with Oregon Sea Grant to offer information about Oregon’s sustainable Dungeness crab fishery. Visitors between ten am and four pm tomorrow will be able to see fishing gear as well as talk with fishermen about the industry. They’ll also offer samples of the delicacy.
