STEP seeking Wild Coho fishery - Aquarium offers Spring Break alternatives - Redistricting begins - Rotary Art

STEP seeking Wild Coho fishery

A group of local anglers will present a proposal to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission tomorrow when that group meets in Florence.
210 – “We’re asking for a Wild Coho fishery in the Siuslaw since the number of coho have rebounded so great that there’s enough excess fish for us to have a fishery.”

Ron Caputo is the president of the local Salmon Trout Enhancement Program, or STEP. He says the proposal is similar to one approved by the commission several years ago because of healthy Wild Coho runs on two area lakes.
211 – “We did the same in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch several years ago, got a Wild Coho fishery established, and we think we can do the same thing this year.”

The STEP proposal would allow up to one wild fish per day, with a maximum of 20 during the fall season. Caputo says there’s already a Chinook season during that time and many Wild Coho are caught and released with an estimated 20-percent not surviving the experience. Getting state approval is just one hurdle. It’s a question that federal regulators must also approve.
212 – “They have to get the federals to tie on, which is NOAA, has to approve the fishery too since we are fishing on an endangered species.”

STEP members say it would also be an economic benefit to the Florence area. The lure of catching a Wild Coho once again is expected to draw many sports fishermen to the Siuslaw River.

With the price of gas taking such a jump over the past three weeks, that long drive you had planned for spring break just got more expensive. The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is just 50 miles and a few gallons of gas away.
213 – “It’s a great place, hopefully, fingers crossed, it will be sunny. We’ve got all sorts of feeding narrations, come and see the sea lions being fed there. Come and see the aviary discussions. We also have some scuba dive presentations that will take place.”

Melody Clausen is the Education Programs Coordinator for the aquarium. She says they’ve prepared a series of special activities through spring break. They’ve also expanded their hours, opening earlier than usual… at nine am… through that week.

The first of a series of regional public hearings by state legislators on the redistricting process will be held tomorrow at Tillamook Bay Community College. Central coast residents don’t have to go that far to testify and observe though. Oregon Coast Community College locations in Lincoln City and Newport will be open from 11 AM to 2 PM tomorrow with a video teleconference link to the host site. A total of 12 regional hearings will be held across the state on the process to redraw legislative boundaries. One other will be on the Oregon Coast… at Southwestern Community College in Coos Bay on April 2nd.

Florence Rotary always has an impressive array of local art that is put up for sale in their annual fund-raising auction. This year’s auction, set for Saturday evening at the Florence Events Center, is no exception. Several local artists have donated pieces. There are two paintings by the late Katheryn Davis. A water color entitled “Corn Field Still Life” was donated by her husband, a second piece was given by a private donor.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Gov. John Kitzhaber has signed a bill
allowing Oregon businesses to claim $93 million in federal tax
benefits on their state tax returns. Kitzhaber signed the bill into
law yesterday. It allows businesses to accelerate the depreciation
of new equipment for a larger tax benefit upfront. It also allows
for a state tax deduction of up to $4,000 for tuition and other
college-related expenses.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Attorneys for the U.S. Treasury Department
say it would be too much work to inform each person and
organization listed as a global terrorist of the reasons they are
so designated. The attorneys made the argument yesterday before a
federal appeals court in Oregon in a case involving the state
chapter of a Saudi Arabia-based charity called Al Haramain Islamic
Foundation.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon school bus driver fired after
he refused to remove a Confederate battle flag flying from his

group in hopes of getting his job back. The Rutherford Institute of
Charlottesville, Va., sent a letter yesterday to First Student Bus
Transportation Services demanding that Ken Webber of Medford be
reinstated.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon House is scheduled to vote today
on a bill that would remove legal protections for parents who
refuse medical treatment and rely on faith to heal their dying
children. The bill sponsored by Democratic Rep. Carolyn Tomei of
Milwaukie would eliminate faith healing as a defense for murder
charges.

BEND, Ore. (AP) - Deschutes County authorities say they have
found the body of a 26-year-old Bend woman in the Deschutes River
at the lower end of Benham Falls. Police say Carly Phillips had not
been seen since she left her parents' house Tuesday afternoon to
run errands and had not been seen since. A family member found her
car late Tuesday night in a parking area at the falls.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A 15-year-old Labrador-mix is up for a
national Human Society award for helping save his owner when he
suffered a heart attack in his North Portland home. Danny Fincher
tells the Oregonian that Ceili (KAY-lee) was following him around
and acting strangely in the hours before he had the heart attack.
When Fincher collapsed, Ceili alerted his wife, who took him to a
hospital.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland man who made headlines when
he called 911 Monday to report he had broken into a home is in
trouble again, this time in southwest Washington. KPTV reports
24-year-old Timothy James Chapek was arrested and charged with
stealing a car from a Beaverton BMW dealership early yesterday.
