Search continues for missing Veneta Boy - DuneFest 2010 opens - Habitat breaking ground on 18 and 19 - Council to fill vacancy

Search continues for missing five-year old

No word yet this morning on the status of the search for a 5-year old Veneta Boy missing since late yesterday afternoon at Washburne State Park north of Florence. Oregon State Police Sergeant Andy Kenyon said Isaak Benhamin Glenn was at the park with family friends and was playing with several other children about 5:00 yesterday when he was noticed missing. Campers searched the park area for about 30-minutes before calling police. Glenn’s parents were notified as well, and about 30 searchers including firefighters, park employees, volunteers and police began looking for the slender red-head. Kenyon said Lane County Search and Rescue took over the operations late last night and efforts were expected to continue through this morning. Conditions were described as foggy with temperatures in the mid-50s. Glenn was reportedly wearing a blue t-shirt, gray shorts and flip-flops.

The Florence City Council won’t talk about filling the vacancy created by last week’s passing of Dave Franzen until later this month. When they do make an appointment, it will be for 28 months. Under most circumstances a vacancy would be filled only until the next general election, which would be November, but in this case the charter is clear. Because Franzen passed away less than 100 days prior to the election the council is required to post an appointment for the full amount of time remaining in his term.

As work is wrapping up on home number 17 in the Florence area to be built by Habitat for Humanity two more will begin. A groundbreaking ceremony for homes number 18 and 19, a pair of joined townhomes, will be held Saturday morning, 9:30 at the construction sites on Keener Place, just east of the former Booster Senior Center on 15th street. When the homes are done, one will be owned by Amber Dietz and her daughter; the other by Angie Grover and her two children. The dedication for home number 17 is set for August 29th.

It was recently recognized by Oregon Festivals and Events Association as the “best sporting event in Oregon”, DuneFest 2010 got underway yesterday in Winchester Bay. The five-day run will include several ATV racing events and activities, as well as family offerings. Friday and Saturday night will feature “Rock the Dunes” with live music by a variety of artists. The Reedsport Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event, aimed at recognizing the significance of the ATV industry to that area.

sergeant.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - The Washington County, Ore., sheriff's

then felt his eye begin to burn. Doctors say the eye did suffer
some damage.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Nike boosted its CEO's compensation more
than 84 percent in its most recent fiscal year. An Associated Press

down a 7-year-old girl's lemonade stand at a recent art fair in

had to put the public's health first.
