Council to interview council applicant - surfer escapes injury - PeaceHealth moving jobs - Bridge work to cause delays

Council vacancy expected to be filled…

Florence city councilors will meet at six this evening for an interview of the one remaining applicant for the vacancy created when Dave Franzen passed away in July. Because of a City Charter requirement, the position must be filled by appointment, rather than by election. Former councilor Paul Holman will talk with the council this evening. Robert Bare, a planning commission member, had applied, but withdrew his application at the last minute citing travel plans that would hamper his ability to serve on the council. Mayor Phil Brubaker says the council will interview Holman, then discuss during the meeting whether or not to appoint him, or reopen the process to seek more applicants. Whomever is appointed will serve through 2012. Also up for discussion will be whether or not the council would like to proceed with a possible ordinance that would allow social gaming. They’ll also hear a semi-annual report on the management of the Florence Senior Center. The council meets at six for the interviews… the regular session begins at City Hall at seven.

Traffic across the Siuslaw River on the Highway 101 bridge will delayed over the next several days during daylight hours beginning tomorrow as a contractor works to make pavement repairs to the north and south approaches. Motorists should expect ten to 20-minutes delays according to Rick Little with the Oregon Department of Transportation. Knife River Corporation crews will be flagging traffic across the bridge as their crews grind away the accesses and replace them with new pavement. Crews are also expected to try to complete the bridge resurfacing project that began in August.

A 29-year old Coos Bay surfer escaped injury, but his board suffered some damage one day last week when it was attacked by a great white shark as he was surfing near Winchester Bay. David Lowden said it’s not the first time he’s encountered a shark. He estimated this one at about 14-feet long. He told authorities it broke the fins off his board. The attack was the first off the Oregon Coast this year, but the fifth overall on the West Coast.

Peacehealth is considering moving thousands of jobs out of Lane County and into a central processing office in Vancouver, Washington. The governing board of the Catholic sponsored nonprofit health system has tentatively voted to set up the center that would draw jobs away from its several regional offices. PeaceHealth has more than 11,700 employees systemwide. More than 4,800 of them are based in Lane County.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Searchers spent the weekend combing a
northwest Portland island searching for clues that might lead them
to an 8-year-old boy who has been missing for four months. About
160 people helped search Saturday and yesterday for Kyron Horman.
Multnomah County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Mary Lindstrand says
searchers don't have new clues but are being thorough in their
search.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - The suspect in a fatal White City shooting
has been arrested after his family attempted to turn him in to
Medford police. The Jackson County sheriff's office says the
23-year-old Andres Garcia-Palomino said the gun fired accidentally
early Saturday when he handed it to the victim. He's jailed on
manslaughter and weapons charges.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) - The Coast Guard was at the ready when a
56-foot fishing boat capsized crossing the Tillamook entrance bar.
The vessel had contacted the Coast Guard to tell them of the
planned crossing and it sent two lifeboats as a precaution. When
the ship capsized, one of the lifeboats rescued the two people from
the water.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A man rescued from his burning truck after
crashing into a school bus in Eugene has been booked into jail for
suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Police say two bystanders
pulled the man from his truck early Saturday morning, after he ran
a traffic light and crashed. The bus driver wasn't injured.

BEND, Ore. (AP) - Some ranchers are dissatisfied with Oregon's
reevaluation of the state's wolf management plan. The Oregon Fish
and Wildlife Commission's plan relaxes guidelines for ranchers to
"harass" wolves causing problems with livestock. But, some
ranchers want the state to consider easier guidelines for them to
kill wolves that hunt livestock.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Dogs, cats and even a snail lined up at a
Salem church yesterday for the annual blessing of animals. Saint
Paul's Episcopal Church participated in the yearly tradition that
celebrates Saint Francis of Assisi, the 13th century friar known
for his love of animals.

TAKING A LOOK INTO COAST RADIO SPORTS:

Prep Football:
After five lead changes, the Siuslaw Vikings came out on top 35-27 over the Douglas Trojans in Winston Friday night to open the Far West League season. Kaleb Schneider carried the ball 14 times for 62 yards, but two of those were for touchdowns, including a one yard scamper with three minutes remaining to ice the win for the Vikings. In other Far West games Friday night, Brookings-Harbor beat North Bend 27-20 and Sutherlin downed South Umpqua 48-7. In the Mountain West League Mapleton scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat Mohawk 40 -34. It’s the first Sailor victory over the Indians in more than a decade. Micah Espinosa carried the ball 23 times for 296 yards and four touchdowns. Hagen Holmes had 25 carries for 156 yards.

Cross Country:
The Siuslaw Viking girls edged Hidden Valley by three points to claim the team title at the Woahink Cross Country Invitational Saturday. College Football:
Oregon football coach Chip Kelly may have downplayed the significance of his team's win over Stanford, but it certainly helped the Ducks in the national championship conversation. The Ducks overcame a slow start Saturday to beat Stanford 52-31, then jumped over Boise State to No. 3 in the national rankings.

Ryan Katz came of age in Oregon State's 31-28 win over Arizona State on Saturday. Now the question is whether the sophomore quarterback can keep it going. Ninth-ranked Arizona is not likely to make it easy when the teams meet in Tucson next week. The Wildcats rank second nationally in total defense.
