Meet the brewers - Wings and wheels even if it's wet - SMS wood shop hoping for a bright future

It’s Fall Festival Time in Florence…

The music will feature a three-time Grammy nominee in Ellen Whyte and her trio and the Ty Curtis Band, the runner up in last year’s International Blues Challenge. That’s when the Chowder Blues and Brews takes the stage beginning this evening at the Florence Events Center. The music starts at 5:30 with the KUSH Band, followed by Curtis. Tomorrow’s entertainment begins at noon: First Class Blues followed by Jimorra and The Frankie Hernandez Band, before the Ellen Whyte Trio takes the stage at 7:30. In addition to the Blues… there’ll be a half-dozen Oregon micro-brews including Wakonda from Florence as well as Ninkasi, Deschutes, Full Sail, Rogue and Southern Oregon Brewing. A new feature of the festival this year will be a question and answer session with brewers, including tastings, from four to six pm on Saturday. The third leg of the festival is the Oregon Coast Chowder Cookoff. A panel of professional judges will evaluate the entries Saturday morning, then at noon the People’s Choice Tasting will begin. Weekend passes for the festival are $15… one day passes are available as well.

Another part of the Fall Festival this year is the Lions Club ‘Wings and Wheels’ show at the airport. It will feature a fly-in of aircraft as well as classic cars, but it’s much more than that say organizers. While the weather may dampen the attendance of aircraft, several different classic and military vehicles will be on display, food and other demonstrations from ten until three tomorrow. Parking is $2 per car with proceeds being split between the Lions and the Siuslaw Viking Wrestling program.

For 40-years woodshop was a part of the curriculum at Siuslaw Middle School. It was cut this past year as a part of budget reductions but some folks are hoping to bring it back. They’ve entered the program in the Clorox Bright Future Program, offering a $50-thousand payment to the winner in an online poll. Several $20-thousand grants are available for runners up as well. Backers say go to “power a bright future dot com” and vote every day through the end of this month.

There’s another poll of sorts coming up soon. There are seven measures on the November Second general election ballot. A new feature in this year’s Voter’s Pamphlet are explanations and evaluations of two of the measures done by a citizen review panel earlier this year. 24-randomly selected voters reviewed measures 73 and 74, hearting from opponents and supporters, discussed them with experts and deliberated with one another. Ultimately each group wrote a one page evaluation. Voters can review them in the Voter’s Pamphlet that was mailed earlier this week. Ballots will be mailed beginning one week from today.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The percentage of Oregon's public schools
rated as outstanding has increased.
State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo released the annual
state report card Thursday and said high school ratings showed the
most dramatic gains, boosted by higher reading scores.
Of the 1,155 public schools that were judged, 37 percent were
rated outstanding, up three percentage points, 59 percent were
rated satisfactory, down two percentage points and 4 percent were
rated in need of improvement, down a percentage point.
The annual report cards are based on a variety of factors such
as test results, attendance and dropout rates, class sizes and
teacher education and experience.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The former girlfriend of Joshua Turnidge has
told jurors hearing his murder trial that money was a constant
problem when they lived together. The Statesman Journal says Jaime
Lewis testified yesterday that her income as an in-home day care
provider often was their only source of income during their six
years together. Turnidge and his father face aggravated murder
charges in the 2008 bombing of a Woodburn bank.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Multnomah County judge has decided to
delay until Jan. 6 the divorce proceeding between Kaine Horman and
Terri Moulton Horman, the father and stepmother of a boy missing
since June. The Oregonian reports that Judge Keith Meisenheimer
calls the issues "extraordinary, difficult and complex." and
unlike any that's come before state family law court. Kyron Horman
vanished June 4. His 8th birthday was Sept. 9.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a reserve sheriff's deputy is
being sought in the killing of an Eastern Oregon woman. The
attorney general's office said an arrest warrant was issued
yesterday for 29-year-old Steven Montie Crum of Morrow County. He
was last seen the day before in a red or maroon flatbed Dodge
pickup truck from the 1990s. The body of Jessica Rae Killian, a
Hermiston bartender, was found Monday near Ione (EYE'-ohn).

SEATTLE (AP) - The Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad has
agreed to pay a civil penalty of $272,900 for a diesel fuel spill
that went into a salmon stream in Southern Oregon after two
locomotives derailed in 2004. The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency announced the settlement yesterday. Officials say 4,200
gallons of diesel spilled.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Attorney General John Kroger says there's
"vast dissatisfaction" with Oregon's open records and meetings
law, and the Legislature should act to improve government
transparency. But in a new report, Kroger doesn't say exactly what
the Legislature should do in disputes such as how much agencies can
charge for records.
