Governor debate lively - military heritage museum to begin clearing - new state park opens - SOS and DV

Experience one issue highlighted in Governor debate

Democrat John Kitzhaber and Republican Chris Dudley faced off last night in a lively debate that focused on competing narratives in the gubernatorial campaigns. Former governor Kitzhaber sought to portray Dudley as a protector of the wealthy while Dudley said another Kitzhaber administration would be a return to the past.
200 – “Our last two governors have had over 60 years of experience between the two of them, yet here we sit. 47th in job growth, 42nd in employment, 43rd in quality of schools, among the national leaders in hunger and homelessness.”

Kitzhaber showed his experience, at least in political debates. He turned the question around to one of Dudley’s inexperience.
201 – “We have a three billion dollar budget deficit, we need to understand the nature of that budget and I’ve actually proposed a plan that creates thousands of new jobs now while Chris has proposed a plan that actually doesn’t create jobs in the context of this biennium and we just can’t afford that.”

The candidates answered questions from a panel of reporters in the KGW-TV studio for about 30-minutes, then heard questions for the following half hour from undecided voters. The complete hour-long video of the debate can be seen on kgw.com

Ground could be broken as early as this month for a museum that will highlight contributions made by coastal residents to the American military. The Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum is planned for a site near the airport. Backers gained preliminary approval from the city this week to begin clearing ground. Museum president Sam Spayd said “it’s been a two-year process to get this far”. He and others are hoping the work on the site will show progress and help spur more donations. So far they’ve raised just over $50-thousand but an estimated $300-thousand will be needed to complete the building in time for the targeted November 11th, 2011 opening.

Keeping to his initiative of opening a new park every year, Governor Kulongoski will be in Lincoln County this morning to dedicate the latest addition to the Oregon State Parks inventory. The Beaver Creek Natural Area, a 375 acre preserve of uplands, wetlands and waterways is just south of Newport. The park, featuring a new visitor center along with several hiking and kayaking trails is 1.3 miles off Highway 101 at Ona Beach. Access to the area is free.

Siuslaw Outreach Services begins their month-long observance of Domestic Violence Awareness month at one this afternoon with a presentation at Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. Beginning at one pm, a survivor of domestic violence will share a first hand account. Several other activities are planned this month, including the second annual “Men’s March” October 23rd, drawing attention to the issue. The month wraps up October 26th with a special limited seating fund raising dinner at Feast Restaurant.
