City gets grant for FEC generator - gas up - Rhody Court announced - Reedsport man killed

Events Center to get emergency power…

The City of Florence will receive $87-thousand towards purchase and installation of a 300-K-W generator at the Florence Events Center. Police Chief Maury Sanders told the city council this week the grant, from the federal Department of Homeland Security, was actually awarded to Lane County Emergency Management. But, he said, through the coordinated cooperation of county police chiefs Florence will get the money to finalize disaster preparations at the FEC. Sanders said another $10-thousand grant from the city’s insurance carrier, plus $10-thousand raised by the Friends of the Events Center will also be put towards the project. The City will still have to find about $6-thousand to wrap up the project. Emergency managers have targeted the Events Center as being a regional shelter in the event of a widespread area disaster such as a tsunami or earthquake. The center’s size, kitchen facilities and location make it an attractive place to gather people who may be left homeless.

A Reedsport man was found dead near his wrecked vehicle just south of Reedsport early yesterday morning after transportation workers noticed tracks in the gravel shoulder. According to Oregon State Police 44-year old Mark A. Jarrett died at the scene when his southbound Jeep 4x4 left the highway and plunged about 70-feet down an embankment. Police say Jarrett appeared to have been wearing safety restraints, but was apparently ejected from the vehicle.

With Thanksgiving just a week away gas prices are on the rise. According to Triple-A of Oregon the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the state is just over $3. That’s up three cents from last week and about 25-cents higher than a year ago. The national price has gone up 3 ½ cents in the past week and is $2.89. In Florence, individual prices at the seven separate stations have been changed frequently in the past two weeks, but the average remains at $2.82 a gallon. Triple-A spokesperson Marie Dodds says crude oil has dropped slightly, but increased Thanksgiving travel also increases demand.

Five Siuslaw High School Seniors will represent Florence over the next several months as members of the Rhododendron Festival Senior Court. Emma Claussen, Tessa Hagle, Emalee Joslin, Katelyn Barkley and Ashley Valarde were selected this week following an application and interview process. No theme has been selected yet for the 104th Annual Rhododendron Festival set for May 20th through 22nd. But, the Siuslaw River Bridge will play prominently… 2011 is the 75th anniversary of the opening of the span designed by noted engineer Conde McCullouch.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning through late this evening for a storm system expected to bring winds from the south and gusting to 50 miles an hour this afternoon. Forecasters say winds should subside once the frontal system passes onshore. But, they add, heavy rains are expected to continue overnight.
