Honoring the Greatest Generation - Coos County mining drawing opposition - Dead and dying sea lions carry disease

Weather and crowds graced Veterans Parade…

Organizers said it was the largest Veteran’s Parade yet in Florence. Several entries celebrated the “Greatest Generation” Saturday afternoon and hundreds of people lined the parade route down Highway 101 and through Old Town Florence. Entries for the parade came from the Florence area, as well as Reedsport. Two flyovers of military aircraft, including a 1940’s vintage bi-plane and a Coast Guard Helicopter, took place during the parade. One highlight was the “rolling taps” as three buglers stationed along the route on Bay Street heralded the arrival of the parade along the final four blocks in memory of veterans who are no longer with us. Florence’s Veteran’s Day observances will continue this week. The Florence Elks Lodge will hold their traditional ceremony Thursday, November 11th at 11 AM at the lodge on 12th Street.

About 200 Coos County residents are embarking on a spirited opposition to a planned mining operation near Coos Bay. But, the Australian-owned company undertaking the project says the mine will be environmentally safe and bring jobs to a region with an unemployment rate that has lingered above 13-percent. Oregon Resources Corporation is moving forward with construction of a $14-million plant, and negotiations with Coos County continue about expanding the site. The company wants to extract chromite, used in making stainless steel, along with zircon and garnet from several sites between Coos Bay and Bandon.

A sharp increase in the number of dead and dying California sea lions along the Oregon Coast is likely related to a bacterial disease that can spread to humans and their pets. Jim Rice, coordinator of the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network says they’ve been receiving several calls on a daily basis about the sea lions. The OSU scientist says the overall population of sea lions has increased, so it’s difficult to tell if the mortality rate has gone up. But, he says, many of the animals are found to have died from leptospirosis. Rice says the bacterial disease can be found in a variety of species and can be transmitted to humans. Dog owners are advised to keep their pets on a leash and away from sick or dead animals on the beach. Humans are advised not to touch them either.
