Parking in Old Town - don't park in bike lanes - county pulls flood plain proposal - say it with me... Assvassangthong

Old Town Parking…

It seems to be an issue that comes up on a regular basis…
210 – “Parking in the Old Town area has been an issue, as many residents and business owners have known for a long time.”

Shawn Penrod is the Executive Assistant in the City Manager’s Office. He says over the summer and through the fall city hall has been receiving conflicting complaints about parking and city enforcement efforts.
211 – “On one hand we’re getting complaints about we’re not enforcing the parking restrictions enough, and at the same time we’re getting complaints that we’re a little too restrictive and vigorous in our enforcement down there in Old Town.”

Those conflicts prompted officials to schedule a pair of public meetings next Wednesday to hear from anyone who has a thought on parking.
212 – “And so we’re just trying to get all of the stakeholders together, residents, business owners, shoppers, anybody concerned about the Old Town area. And, try to get them all on the same page and try to get out there in a public format what the problems are and what some of our options are and then try to get all of that on the table.”

Penrod says the meetings will be open to anyone… the first will be at eight AM Wednesday, November 11th, the second later that afternoon at 4:30. Both meetings are at City Hall.

Continuing on the subject of parking and enforcement: Florence Police Lieutenant Ray Gutierrez says if you’re going to the Siuslaw Football game tonight, be sure to park in a marked parking area and not along 27th street. The street in that area has delineated bicycle lanes on both sides and, he says, some people tend to park there when there’s a game going on. Officers will highlight the bike lanes again tonight using orange cones as they did last week. Gutierrez says they likely won’t be issuing any citations… he says their efforts are more towards education and voluntary compliance.

Lane County has cancelled a planned public hearing on a proposal that would restrict development and activities in flood plains and near bodies of water in unincorporated areas. The County Commission, on a split 3-2 vote this week, decided to table the proposal for now. It’s turned into a controversial issue. An overflow crowd last week caused officials to cancel the initial planned public hearing on the matter. Now, one of the major proponents, The Eugene Water and Electric Board, has withdrawn its support as well.

Oregon State Fire Marshall Randy Simpson says when you set your clocks back tomorrow night before going to bed… check your batteries in your smoke detectors at the same time. Daylight Savings Time ends overnight tomorrow. Simpson says if your smoke alarms use the 9-volt batteries… go ahead and replace them. They’re inexpensive and can save lives and prevent property damage.

Siuslaw High School students competing in Forensics and Speech competitions in the past few weeks have brought home some hardware. Two weeks ago, four students took part in a ‘Student Congress” at South Albany High School. Blair Pearson was named the ‘outstanding speaker’ during the second session. Last weekend Vorapal Assvassangthong finished first in a prose reading competition at Neah-Kah-Nie High School. Assvassangthong is a foreign exchange student from Thailand, the competition was for students whose first language is something other than English.
