New parking limits in effect in Old Town - Ballots have a new look - Fire station lease extended - PTA Carnival

Too Tall for Old Town…

Seasonal parking restrictions in portions of Old Town Florence go into effect today and you may want to get out your tape measure. As a result of meetings with Bay Street Business operators last month, a new seven-foot height restriction has been imposed along with the three-hour time limit. Florence Code Enforcement Officer Brandon Ott says the seven foot limit was imposed at the request of business owners who complained that tall vehicles blocked the view of their businesses from the street. Other refinements to the parking restrictions have also been implemented: No longer will over-length vehicles such as recreational vehicles or trailers be allowed to take up more than one space on Bay Street between Kingwood and Nopal Street. The limitations also extend one block north on Laurel, Maple and Nopal Streets. That’s a smaller area than in past years when three hour parking restrictions extended as far as Second Street. Police Spokesperson Sarah Huff says employers in the Old Town area are being urged to let their employees and customers know about the rules. Violating them can bring fines that begin at $15 for the first occurrence; but can increase to as much as $50 for the fourth offense within a year. Huff said authorities also want to warn drivers about parking in marked bicycle lanes. She says state law prohibits parking, stopping or standing a vehicle in any such area. The fine for that violation is $142.

Have you looked at your ballot for the May 17th election yet? If so, you may have noticed a slightly different look this time around. County Clerk Cheryl Betschart says a change in the election departments tabulation system means a change in how voters will mark their ballots. Previously, a single line to complete an arrow pointing to the desired candidate was the way to signify your choice. Now, voters will fill in an oval on the ballot next to their selection. Betschart says the old system was no longer being supported in Oregon. 32 other Oregon Counties are using the new system. She doesn’t believe it’s going to be “a huge adjustment” for voters… just something new.

The final terms of an annexation of property within the City of Florence into the Siuslaw Valley Fire District will become effective July First this year. Leases on two city owned fire stations would also end by that date and so the two agencies will extend an “accommodation lease” for five years. Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue will pay one dollar per year for five years and utilize the Old Town Fire Station on Laurel Street behind City Hall and an auxiliary station on Oak Street near Lane Community College. Fire Chief John Buchanan told City Councilors last night the Old Town station actually has more volunteers responding to it than to the main station on Highway 101. He said volunteers living near the Old Town area can respond quickly and more efficiently from there.

Mention a PTA Carnival and it brings about images of cake walks, cotton candy, balloon darts and even a dunk tank. The Florence Community PTA will be hosting their annual carnival this Saturday from 11 to 2 at Siuslaw Middle School with all of the above and a little bit more. Carnival Chair Diane McCalmont says it’s a chance “for families to get out and have some fun for relatively little expense”. There’s no admission charge and all games are only 25-cents. The booths and games are operated by different school clubs, classes and organizations and they all share in the proceeds evenly.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - The Lincoln County district attorney says a
sheriff's deputy was justified in shooting and wounding a
22-year-old man who refused to drop a machete and knife and who
didn't respond to the use of a stun gun. DA Rob Bovett says Newport
Deputy Eric Sorby was in "immediate danger of bodily injury" and
had no choice but to fire. Troy Paul Holmes is hospitalized in fair
condition.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland-area transit agency says
distracting parenting is to blame for a weekend incident in which a
light rail train pulled away with a 2-year-old girl on board while
her father was still on the platform. Kevin James tells The
Oregonian he loaded his daughter and a bicycle on board, then
hopped off to grab a detached bike trailer. That's when the train
left the station with his daughter. TriMet says James was breaking
agency rules by trying to bring the bike trailer on board.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say they clocked a
"visibly intoxicated" driver at 111 mph on Interstate 205 and
weren't impressed with her statement that she was driving a
passenger to a hospital. A trooper says he not only clocked the
1997 Pontiac Firebird speeding but saw it make several unsafe lane
changes. He says 53-year-old Florence Rea of Oregon City was booked
into jail and later released.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Oregon has indefinitely suspended linebacker
Kiko Alonso following his arrest on burglary and trespassing
charges. The Register-Guard reported the junior from Los Gatos,
Calif., was arrested early Sunday after a Eugene woman called 911
to report a strange man pounding on her front door demanding to be
let inside. Alonso was suspended for the entire 2010 season after a
driving while intoxicated citation last winter.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) - When Beaverton police tracked a burglary
suspect to the roof of a duplex last night it wasn't over. Police
say they negotiated with the 40-year-old man for hours, trying to
talk him into climbing down a ladder. The man refused and tried to
push away the ladder with officers still on it. Finally, two
officers climbed to the roof early today and were able to subdue
the man, who was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - A college student from Peru has been
charged with aggravated murder in the stabbing deaths of his
ex-girlfriend and their 1-year-old son in Benton County. A judge
entered not guilty pleas at yesterday's arraignment for Gustavo
David Martinez Aquepucho and ordered him held without bail.
Prosecutors say Kelsey Rozetta Baker and the couple's young son
were killed Friday at their home in Philomath in a suspected double
murder-suicide plot.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Muslims who had planned to celebrate the
death of Osama bin Laden in downtown Portland last night canceled
the event due to threats. The Islamic Society of Greater Portland
says bin Laden's death was a relief to the community because he did
not represent their non-violent beliefs. The group canceled the
gathering in Pioneer Courthouse Square after receiving hateful,
extremist emails.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - There is plenty of snow in the mountains in
Southern Oregon this year. Measurements this week showed the snow
depth at three sites on Mount Ashland was 129 percent of normal
while water content measured 125 percent. The mountain snowpack
reflects how much water will be released to feed summer stream
flows, irrigation and reservoir storage.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Multnomah County sheriff's office says
it has tentatively identified the body of a man in his late 60s
recovered early today from the Columbia River near the I-5 bridge
in Portland. Lt. Mary Lindstrand told The Oregonian it could match
a missing person case.
