Write in candidates for Port of Siuslaw - Fire destroys Dunes City home - Sheriff hopes to warm up cold cases

Write in Race for Port Commission…

Three contested races will be highlighted this afternoon during KCST’s Our Town, the monthly news magazine. Voters will only see candidates’ names on their ballot for two of the highlighted races. That’s because nobody filed for an open position on the Port of Siuslaw Commission currently held by Bud Saulsgiver who opted to not seek re-election. At least three candidates have publicly expressed a desire for voters to write their names in. Two of them will be on the air this afternoon. Bianca Hein is a licensed marine surveyor and writer. Florence has been her ‘home port’ since 1992, but she has only made it her full time residence since 2007. Her past public service experience includes helping to set up Oregon’s office of economic development in the early 1990s. John Murphey is a lifelong resident and also has public experience. He’s currently the chair of the City of Florence Budget Committee and served two terms on the Siuslaw School Board. Hein and Murphey will each answer a series of prepared questions. A third write in candidate, former Lane County Commissioner Bill Fleenor has declined to come on the air and has refused to answer the questions. Fleenor says he believes his decade of serving as an elected official speaks to his – quote – “qualifications and philosophy sufficient for the voters to make an informed decision”. This afternoon’s program features two other races… one for the school board between Tammy Butler and Rob Spooner… the other for the fire district board between Bill Mead and Cindy Spinner. Local authors Judy Fleagle and Dick Smith will also be on the program talking about their new book “Crossings” about the construction of the Siuslaw River Bridge, completed in 1936. The program airs from four to six pm this afternoon.

A major telephone outage in the Reedsport and Winchester Bay left residents there without phone service for several hours yesterday afternoon. Frontier Communications reported the outage also impacted internet connections for many Coos County residents. Reedsport residents were without 911 service for a time, but the Douglas County Sheriff’s office said cell phones were operable… and they had a temporary connection with emergency services in the area until the connection was restored.

Lane County Sheriff Tom Turner is hoping to warm up some cold cases. He’s teamed up with Crime Stoppers to produce a deck of playing cards highlighting seven missing persons and 11 unsolved homicides in Lane County dating back as far as 1968. The cards feature profiles and photos of the people involved in each case. Turner says they’ll be distributed to jails and prisons, including the Oregon State Penitentiary, in the hope of developing new leads. Crime Stoppers will provide a 24-hour tip-line as well as fund rewards. Turner says the playing cards were first used in Florida with success and have spread across the country. They’ll be available for sale at the Sheriff’s Office in Eugene for $5 a deck… proceeds from the sales will go towards the cold case unit.

The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline increased by ten cents this past week and is just three-cents shy of $4 a gallon. Oregon’s average price, as measured by Triple-A, jumped by seven cents this week, it’s at $3.95. In Florence we saw a commensurate jump, but the average continues to track well below the statewide average… it’s at $3.81 a gallon. According to Marie Dodds there could be an adjustment coming. She says a growing number of industry analysts are suggesting crude prices may be inflated and susceptible to a price correction.

Fire destroyed a home on Woodland Lane in Dunes City overnight. The 911 call came in around 12:30 this morning to report the two story home, owned by Siuslaw Track and Field Coach Chris Johnson was completely involved by the time firefighters arrived. Nobody was home at the time, but neighbors reported that Johnson’s black lab made it out ok. The cause of the blaze is not immediately apparent according to Fire Chief John Buchanan. He said local investigators, aided by the State Fire Marshall’s Office are sifting through the rubble today. Firefighters were on scene mopping up several hours. Buchanan said nobody was injured.

of sexually abusing a teenage girl he met on a bus has been

suburban Gresham. The Oregonian says his unoccupied boat was found
motoring in the river channel between north Portland and Hayden
Island last December with no one aboard.

ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) - Columbia County deputies say they've
arrested a former Clatskanie police officer on a burglary charge.
The sheriff's office says a neighbor identified Joseph Harrison as

convictions for break-ins that occurred in 2009 when he was an
officer.

The bill would require people to use hands-free headsets while
talking on a phone, even if they're using the phone in the course
of their work.
