Procession and Celebration of Life mark loss of officer - Oral History to be included in Military Heritage Museum - Get your Rhody "ride on" early.

Woman says she knew she killed a police officer

More than 450 emergency vehicles participated in a procession that wound through Eugene and Springfield Friday afternoon, ending at the Matthew Knight Arena on the University of Oregon Campus. That’s where a community ‘celebration of life’ was held for slain Eugene police officer Chris Kilcullen. He was gunned down while trying to make a traffic stop April 22nd. The woman accused of shooting Kilcullen admitted to police that she knew she had shot a police officer. 56-year old Cheryl D. Kidd also told authorities she believed she was being followed by police before the shooting. During the interview, Kidd reportedly had trouble focusing and would only occasionally answer questions put to her. She reportedly has a developmental disability and a history of mental illness. Kidd has pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated murder, which carries the possibility of the death penalty. Her attorney, Gordon Mallon, says he will file documents with the court related to questions about Kidd’s mental fitness.

Construction on the home of the proposed Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum hasn’t yet begun, but plans are already under way for what will go inside the building. The Western Lane Community Foundation recently awarded a $900 grant to the organization to help pay for audio-visual equipment that will be used for an oral history program. Museum board member Cal Applebee says work on collecting the oral histories will begin in the near future. Local veterans will be encouraged to participate and their histories will not only be shared with the local museum, but will also become part of the national program at the Library of Congress.

It’s still three weeks away, but you can already ‘get your ride on’ at the Davis Carnival at the 104th Rhododendron Festival. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce is offering advance tickets to the carnival at a discounted price. Armbands, each good for a full day of rides at the carnival can be purchased for $21 at the Visitor’s Center… a savings of between one and four dollars depending on which day they’re redeemed. Chamber Executive Director Kady Sneddon says applications can still be submitted for Grand Floral Parade entries. And, she says, advance sign ups for banner carriers and pooper scoopers in the parade are now being taken. Children at least eight-years of age are eligible… participants get a free carnival wristband for their efforts.
