Council gets back to work - County suspends eco dev grant program - Roddy Road Show - Lincoln City abduction

City Council gets back to work…

The Florence City Council has several items on their agenda for tonight’s meeting, including a land swap; new regulations concerning bicycles and motorized wheelchairs; and a ‘cleanup’ of the open burning prohibition. They’ll conduct a public hearing on a proposed land swap with the Parkinson Living Trust, which currently possesses a building lot just south of the airport. It’s in an area zoned “Public Use Airport” and that’s contributed to the inability to sell the property says realtor Jim Hoberg. He initially asked the city to consider changing the zoning, but instead, city officials have offered to trade it for one of two publicly owned parcels in the Rhodo-View Dunes gated subdivision near Munsel Lake Road. The city has owned those for several years and pays homeowners association dues on the land each year. City Manager Bob Willoughby says that would be much simpler than pursuing a possible zone change. Also up for action, revisions to the city code provisions regulating use of motorized wheel chairs and bicycles on city rights of way. The council will also consider changes to the open burning ordinance to clean up language. Also up for consideration: a temporary street closure request to facilitate the annual Rods and Rhodies classic car show scheduled for September. Florence City Council meets this evening, seven pm at City Hall.

The Lane County office that helps support job growth has suspended a key program amid an investigation into questionable activities. The Lane County Community and Economic Development Department says a grant program that has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to growing businesses will be shut down for as long as 12-months. A new department official, interim Economic Development Coordinator Glenda Poling, says spending had gone unchecked in a division that saw the resignation of its manager in April. The department administers Oregon Lottery funds that are distributed to counties for job creation. The program recently awarded a $100-thousand grant to Quality Child Care of Florence for a community child care facility.

Police in Lincoln City are looking for a man they say abducted an 18-year old woman at knifepoint Sunday afternoon. The woman’s name has not been released, but she was able to escape after being driven a mile east of Lincoln City. She was able to run away and call for help, but did suffer some ‘non-life threatening’ knife wounds in the process. Police say she was kidnapped from the parking lot at the Tanger Factory Outlet Center about 4:30 in the afternoon. They also say the man, who is described only as missing several teeth, may have been involved in an attempted abduction of two women earlier in the day.

He’s been called the Prophet of Doom because of the message that he repeats at every available opportunity about getting ready for the “big one”. James Roddey, award winning author and educator, is the Earth Sciences Information Officer with the Oregon Department of Geology. His message: get ready for a possible devastating earthquake and tsunami along the Oregon Coast. He’s teamed up with several partners to bring his message of preparedness to three central coast communities this week. Roddey and the Earthquake Road Show will be at the Yachats Commons this evening at 6:30; the Florence Events Center tomorrow at seven; then the Pacific Auditorium in Reedsport Thursday at 6:30. Roddey will also be on tomorrow afternoon’s July edition of KCST’s Our Town, airing from four to six pm.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The federal lands office has proposed using
high-powered toxic chemicals to kill acres of weeds in Eugene. The
BLM hasn't used herbicides in the Eugene area since a conservation
group's 1984 lawsuit spurred a court injunction that stopped the
practice. But the Eugene Register-Guard reports the bureau has
finalized an environmental-impact study and weed management plan,
and is inviting public comment. Conservation groups oppose the use
of any herbicides.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Fire Department investigators say illegal
fireworks are to blame for a 2-alarm fire in northeast Portland
that caused $100,000 damage to a building housing two businesses.
No one was injured in the fire last night that started when
fireworks landed on the roof. The Oregonian reports the fire caused
extensive damage to a coffee shop and a restaurant.

GASTON, Ore. (AP) - A borrowed barbecue is blamed for starting a
fire that destroyed a Yamhill County home where a church group
planned a Fourth of July picnic for at-risk kids. Fire officials
say the barbecue ignited the siding of the house between Gaston and
Yamhill. The family tried to put it out with a garden hose, but the
flames spread quickly and the house was destroyed. No one was
injured.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Searchers have found the body of an
Oregon-based firefighter who failed to show up at an out-of-state
blaze last week. The Oregonian reports that 32-year-old Steven
Dickerson, a U.S. Forest Service firefighter, was found dead Sunday
northeast of Oakridge in the Willamette National Forest in Oregon.
His body was found after a three-day search.

BEND, Ore. (AP) - Dry grass and brush burned east of Bend and
north of Terrebonne on a busy of Fourth of July for central Oregon
firefighters. KTVZ reports a slash-pile burn got out of control and
burned across a field east of Bend. Neighbors slowed it down before
firefighters arrived. Later, four small fires broke out along a
four-mile stretch of Highway 97 north of Terrebonne. They may have
been started by a car with mechanical problems. The largest fire
burned about 12 acres before it was controlled by Jefferson County
firefighters.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Michael Pineda and three relievers
combined on a three-hitter and Josh Bard hit his first home run of
the season to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 victory over the
Oakland Athletics yesterday. Justin Smoak added a tiebreaking RBI
double in the seventh inning for Seattle, which opened a key
seven-game road trip against division rivals with its third win in
four games.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A 20-year-old Bremerton, Wash., man
remains in fair condition, days after a Portland, Ore., police
officer who believed his gun was loaded with beanbags shot the man
with live rounds. The Oregonian newspaper reported yesterday that
William Monroe has been upgraded to fair condition at a Portland
hospital after being critically injured last Thursday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Investigators say a fire early yesterday
morning at a Portland church was deliberately set. The arson fire
at Sekhet-Maat Lodge caused about $6,000 in damage. Investigators
have not yet identified suspects.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) - When firefighters responded to a
Beaverton house fire last night they found two vehicles burning in
the driveway and the front of the home in flames. The fire
department says the home was lost but firefighters prevented flames
from spreading to a neighboring home. No one was injured in the
fire. The cause remains under investigation but fireworks were
being discharged in the area.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Swin Cash scored 19 points and Sue Bird added
17 as the Seattle Storm won in Washington for the first time since
2006, topping the Mystics 73-63 on Sunday. Tanisha Wright also
scored 17 points for the Storm, who took the lead for good late in
the first quarter and were ahead 35-26 at halftime. Seattle
improved to 5-3 on the season while the Mystics fell to 2-6
overall.
