Fishermen rescued - Mom wants mental health help for son - Volunteers sought for DuneFest

Tuna Fishermen rescued near Florence…

After an extensive air search that lasted four days, two fishermen were rescued Friday morning by crews from the Siuslaw River Coast Guard Station. The men, 54-year old Jim Clayholt of Eugene, and his 23-year old son, Tom Clayholt of Marina, California left Astoria Monday morning on the 40-foot Dahlia looking for tuna. They slept on the boat Monday night, then awoke Tuesday morning to find their battery dead and no way to start their engine. The two were able to send a text message, saying they were adrift about 35-miles offshore Astoria and family members notified the The Coast Guard, who launched a search that included aircraft from Sacramento, California; North Bend and Astoria. The cutter Fir joined the search later in the week. The men made contact with searchers Friday morning about eight AM and a lifeboat from Siuslaw River Station was able to take them under two and bring them into the Port of Siuslaw. Neither men were injured and both were in good health after their 135-mile voyage.

The mother of the Florence man who has twice walked away from jail and twice been arrested, says police keep treating him as if he knows what he’s doing.
Farmer – “He’s recently been diagnosed bi-polar paranoid schizophrenic. I’ve given these guys every bit of information. They don’t want to recognize my son has mental health issues.”

Cindy Farmer says that’s why her son, 24-year old Keith Brown, struggled with officers last week, damaging a patrol car and injuring one officer. Because he doesn’t process information the way most people do, rather than submit, he tries to get away.
Farmer – “That’s where the damage to the new police car happened because they was slammed him into the car and that slammed his head into there and then they started pounding him in the head.”

She doesn’t deny that her son has used methamphetamine, and she says she’s tried to keep him from evading the law. Her main goal right now, though she says, is to get help.
Farmer – “I’m not stopping now, I’m so upset with what’s happening, It’s spiraled so out of control. It’s ridiculous ok?. It shouldn’t be like this.”

Brown is in the Lane County Jail where he faces a multitude of charges including unauthorized departure, parole violation, contempt of court, driving while suspended, possession of Methamphetamine, resisting arrest and two counts of assault on public safety officers.

The 14th edition of DuneFest is gearing up just outside of Winchester Bay in Western Douglas County and organizers have put the call out for additional volunteers. Organizer Joe Mirvis says the festival is aimed at off-road enthusiasts who like to ride the Oregon Dunes… but volunteers don’t need any sand experience.
Mirvis – We have several opportunities. Our registration booth is open 24 hours. And we look for volunteers to help man that booth, to greet the people that are coming into DuneFest, and to get them assigned with their camping and their wristbands from eight until ten at night.”

The five-day DuneFest runs August 3rd through the 7th and draws more than 8-thousand people for sand drag races; moto cross; poker runs; and manufacturer’s displays. Mirvis says there’s a lot going on and volunteers get free access.
Mirvis – “They get a t-shirt and they get a wrist band to come and experience DuneFest.”

Prospective volunteers can contact the Reedsport Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce for details.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

flipped when it hit the ground.

50-50 venture between Oregon and Washington.

yesterday near The Dalles Dam and went aground in the Columbia

batter mistakenly walked on a three-ball count against the Seattle

first base after a 3-1 count in the third inning of Los Angeles'

lost track of the count, and the Seattle dugout didn't protest.

eventually scored the only run in the Mariners' 1-0 loss.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Police believe a man who died after
running from officers in Portland suffered a heart attack. The man
was riding in a car that was pulled over early yesterday because a

cornered behind a house and arrested without a struggle. He stopped
breathing in a police car and was taken to a hospital where he died
about two hours later.
