A new type of computer scam; escapee arrested with a fight; Life is a cabaret old chum

Authorities say they’ve noted a new type of computer scam…

More than a dozen complaints about a new type of computer scam have been reported recently to the Oregon Department of Justice. Attorney General’s Spokesman Tony Green says computer owners get a phone call from someone purporting to be from their internet service provider, warning them about a possible scam.
Green – “Unfortunately they are in fact the scammer that they warn you against. And they want to do is get you to download software that will allow them remote access to your computer where they can steal your credit card numbers, your bank account numbers, in general cause you a lot of trouble.”

Green says at least one Lane County resident has fallen victim.
Green – “What they do is they talk you into it and they say, ‘here, come to our website, download this on your computer, that’ll protect you.’ In reality what you’re downloading is a virus.”

He said the best way for computer users to protect themselves is by following some simple guidelines. If you receive an unsolicited phone call or email claiming your computer is at risk, hang up or delete the mail. Make sure your computer has up to date anti-virus software. Green says ‘pop up’ ads also frequently carry malware or spyware and you should never provide any personal information through one.

A man who has walked away from the Florence jail twice in the past year is in custody once again, but not without a fight. Police had located 24-year old Keith Brown at a location just south of South Loftus Road on Highway 101 just after midnight Tuesday night. They served an arrest warrant, handcuffed Brown and were walking him to the car when he tried to break free. Brown was brought under control and forced into the back of the patrol car, but not before one officer suffered a minor knee injury. Police say the patrol car also sustained some minor damage. Brown had been wanted since he failed to return to the jail after a dental appointment in March. He was transported to the Lane County Jail where he faces several additional charges. The March ‘walk away’ isn’t the first time he’s escaped from custody… while serving time last year in the Florence jail he failed to return following a doctor’s appointment and was taken into custody a few weeks later.

The Last Resort Players, just off their recent run with Angry Housewives is now looking to stage a classic. Auditions will be held this weekend at the Florence United Methodist Church for Cabaret.
Lauria -- "It's about the rise of NAZI Germany and the people in the cabaret are trying to go on with life while ignoring the realities of what's going on around them."

Director David Lauria says he was attracted to Cabaret because of it’s technical challenges, and the dancing.
Lauria -- "There's six principal people in the cast, six principal singers, and of course we all know about Sally Bowles and the Master of Ceremonies, But there are also an American novelist that are actually the focus of the play."

Auditions will be at the Methodist Church, at 2nd and Kingwood, Saturday from ten to two, then again Monday evening from seven to nine pm.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

CANYONVILLE, Ore. (AP) - A spokesman for firefighters battling a
wildfire that charred 88 acres in southwestern Oregon says the fire
was fully contained by 6:00 last night. Douglas Forest Protective
Association spokesman Tom Fields says fire crews spent early
yesterday evening putting out so-called hot spots. No serious
injuries were reported. Beals Creek is about 25 miles southeast of
Roseburg.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A Marion County judge has invalidated his own
execution warrant for an Oregon inmate after the state Supreme
Court demanded he show more proof of the inmate's mental
competence. The Oregon Supreme Court gave Judge Joseph Guimond a
choice: either defend his decision in arguments before the court,
or invalidate the death warrant and hold a competency hearing.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 33-year-old woman is being held in
Oregon on attempted murder charges, awaiting extradition to Utah
where she's accused of spiking her roommate's peach smoothie with
antifreeze three years ago. Selena Irene York was arrested this
week in Eugene, Ore. Police say 78-year-old Ed Zurbuchen of Venal,
Utah, nearly died after York bought the smoothie from a nearby
store, dumped out half of it and poured in antifreeze before he
drank it. The man eventually recovered.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The case of the man who urinated in an
open-air reservoir in Portland has drawn attention, and the
government is taking action to cover such reservoirs. But Josh
Seater's actions last month that prompted the city to drain the
basin isn't the reason. The fear is that a terrorist could get a
toxic chemical into a reservoir and sicken people. Security was
improved after the Sept. 11 attacks and opinions about the extent
of the risk that remains are divided. Rules in place since 2006 are
putting an end to such open-air reservoirs.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Guillermo Moscoso allowed two hits in
seven innings and Scott Sizemore homered and drove in two runs to
help the Oakland Athletics salvage the finale of a three-game
series with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners yesterday.
Sizemore homered in the second inning and added an RBI single in
the fifth against Jason Vargas to give Moscoso more than enough
support to win for the first time since May 29. Moscoso won his
first two starts before going 0-4 in June.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Seattle Mariners' struggling offense
is turning to hot-hitting young infielder Kyle Seager as a possible
solution. The Mariners selected the 23-year-old Seager from
Triple-A Tacoma yesterday following their 2-0 loss in Oakland.
Seager was a third-round pick of the Mariners in 2009 and sprinted
through the minors. The team designated catcher Jose Yepez for
assignment.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a registered sex
offender posed as a woman to enter a women's locker room and hot
tub at the Clackamas Aquatic Park where he talked with children.
Clackamas County deputies say a chaperone spotted Thomas Lee Benson
and chased and held him Friday until deputies arrived. KGW reports
the 39-year-old Gresham man was convicted in 1994 for child sexual
abuse and was directed to have no contact with children.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Firefighters and a Marion County sheriff's
deputy responded to a smoke-filled home in Salem yesterday
afternoon and found a woman dead. The sheriff's office says there
was no one else in the home at the time. Neighbors told the
Statesman Journal a married couple lived in the rental home.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities are looking for an Oregon
State Hospital patient who escaped custody yesterday while in
Portland for a visit to a pain clinic. Officials say Danny Stebbins
walked out of the clinic when the staff member watching him took a
restroom break. Stebbins was committed in 2008 after a robbery
conviction in Jackson County.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A 50-pound pit bull attacked and killed a
small dog in an unfenced back yard last night in Salem. Police say
the small dog's owner suffered a bite wound on her hand, trying to
save her pet. She said the pit bull ran into her back yard, bit the
small dog on the head and began shaking it. The pit bull was later
captured and taken to Marion County Dog Control. Officers went
door-to-door in the area but they did not find the owner.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Nine former students of a shuttered
boarding school in Central Oregon charge in a lawsuit that they
were deprived of sleep, water, food and medical care at a place
where parents paid more than $6,000 a month to straighten out
troubled teenagers. The $14 million suit filed Wednesday in state
court says one girl was forced to disclose to her classmates that
her father sexually abused her and to act out sexual propositions
with classmates and adult staff members.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The Montana Highway Patrol says a
motorcycle collided with a pickup truck turning left off of U.S.
Highway 2 in northwestern Montana, killing the two Oregon residents
on the motorcycle. The Missoulian newspaper reports 59-year-old
Randy Burningham and 55-year-old Brenda Burningham, both of Salem,
were killed in the Tuesday afternoon crash. The patrol is still
investigating the crash, including whether the signals on the truck
and trailer were working.

Taking a look at Coast Radio Sports…

The Eugene Emeralds 14-game winning streak came to an end last night at PK Park as the Vancouver Canadians downed the Ems 11-1. Four Canuck pitchers allowed only four hits and combined to strike out seven in a game that was close until the top of the sixth inning when Vancouver batted around and put seven runs on the board. The Emeralds will stay at home, they’ll host Yakima this evening in Eugene for the first of five.
