Power of Florence; Honeyman idiot vandals; trans plan, Eugene pledge

Get charged up with the Power of Florence…

It’s just a few days away... an area-wide day of volunteering and giving back. It’s called the Power of Florence and everyone, young and old, is being encouraged to get out and make a difference. It’s all the brain-child of 11-year old Kaylee Graham who says she wants everyone to experience the feeling of volunteering. Dozens of events are scheduled for Saturday, and already nearly 200 people have registered events on behalf of themselves or groups. Volunteer events are small… like a lemonade stand on Bay Street staffed by 5-year old Mo Wondra to help raise money for his older brother’s best friend… to car washes, bake sales, food drives and pet adoptions. The day begins with a 7 AM pancake feed at the Florence Methodist Church. There’s a “power” walk at eight, just a short hike up Second Street at the Florence Christian Church; and several different events are scheduled for the Grocery Outlet Parking Lot. The day will wrap up with a “party in the park”. At Miller Park, from four to seven pm there’ll be free hot dogs, while they last, and Green Hit Records recording artist Frankie Hernandez, from Austin, Texas, will perform for all the volunteers… and anyone else that comes out… Marty Adams will open the show at four… the party runs through seven pm. There’s still time to register your event at the Power of Florence website… powerofflorence.com.

Oregon State Police are seeking information about who may have been responsible for what one trooper described as – quote – “idiotic”. Trooper Daryl Sheets says around two AM yesterday morning, vandals broke into the nature center at Honeyman State Park and stole fire extinguishers. It’s what they did with those fire extinguishers that Sheets was referring to when he said idiotic. The vandals went from camp to camp, spraying the dry chemical extinguishers into tents, covering the occupants with the fine powder. Witnesses said in one instance they unzipped a tent, stepped in and blasted some young children directly in the face, causing one young child breathing problems. Medics checked everyone at the scene and didn’t transport any patients; park officials sent the campers to an area hotel; and authorities continue to investigate. Trooper Sheets said they only information they had was that the suspects were two males.

The second in a series of meetings aimed at updating Florence’s Transportation System Plan is set for Thursday morning, 9:30 at City Hall. The process will evaluate the current plan that was adopted in 2002 and make recommendations about possible changes to reflect current and future needs.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The Pledge of Allegiance continues to divide
the Eugene City Council. Yesterday Councilor George Brown declined
to join his seven colleagues and the mayor in saying the oath at
the council meeting. It was the council's first recitation since
voting last month to say the pledge at meetings closest to four
patriotic holidays annually. National coverage of the issue put
Eugene in the spotlight. The Register-Guard reports that lots of
largely angry e-mails and phone calls poured in.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - SeaPort Airlines is dropping service to
Newport and Salem. The Portland-based airline blames market trends
and high fuel costs. The Oregonian reports $4.5 million in
government subsidies enabled SeaPort to start flying out of Astoria
and Newport to Portland in 2009. Flights out of Astoria ended in
March when the subsidies ran out.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Salem police say two men posed as U.S.
marshals to stage a home invasion robbery at a northeast Salem
home. Lt. Steve Birr says two men in black dress clothes showed
badges and handguns and claimed to be U.S. marshals serving a
search warrant for drugs early Sunday. They tied up two men in the
home with zip ties and left with an undisclosed amount of jewelry.

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) - Railroad officials and central Oregon
sheriff's detectives are trying to figure out who pushed large
boulders onto railroad tracks near a Madras, Ore., trestle twice in
recent weeks. A freight train locomotive hit the first boulder and
suffered damage. Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas
says conductors spotted the second boulder last week and stopped in
time.

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners have sent three players to
today's All-Star game in Phoenix. Pitcher Michael Pineda was added
to the American League roster Sunday, replacing Detroit's Justin
Verlander, who pitched Sunday. Pineda joins Seattle ace Felix
Hernandez and reliever Brandon League. But Hernandez won't play in
the All-Star game since he pitched Sunday against the Angels.

SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) - Firefighters called a second alarm for
help battling a house fire last night in Silverton. It took more
than 30 firefighters to control the fire that caused heavy damage
to the three-story house. The Silverton Fire District says five
residents got out safely and no one was hurt. Investigators say a
barbecue grill may have caused the fire.

ENTERPRISE, Ore. (AP) - Oregon fisheries managers say the large
snowpack in Eastern Oregon has made for high water and tough
fishing on the Wallowa and Imnaha rivers, so they're raising bag
limits for adult hatchery spring chinook salmon. The department
says anglers can keep up to four.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - It took about 50 Crater Lake National Park
rangers and others about six hours to complete a complex rescue of
a man who fell about 300 feet from the rim of the mountain into the
caldera. The park says the 27-year-old man from New York was with
friends yesterday when he went beyond a barrier onto a snow bank at
an outlook. The man was airlifted to Rogue Valley Medical Center in
Medford with serious injuries.

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Storm's Sue Bird has been named the
WNBA Western Conference player of the week. The veteran guard
averaged 19 points and nearly seven assists in two games last week
- a loss at Indiana and win at home over Los Angeles. Bird is
averaging nearly 16 points and 6 assists a game. The Storm says
Bird stepped up her scoring in the absence of injured Lauren
Jackson.

DALLAS, Ore. (AP) - The Polk County sheriff's office says a
19-year-old Salem woman who was killed in a crash was not wearing a
seat belt. Adair Kapple was a passenger in a car that collided
head-on with another car last night on a rural road. The drivers
were not seriously injured.

HEPPNER, Ore. (AP) - Don't go in the water at the Willow Creek
Reservoir near Heppner. The Oregon Health Authority and Morrow
County Health Department say toxic blue - green algae has made the
water unsafe for swimming or boating. The East Oregonian reports
the algae toxin can cause numbness, dizziness and trouble
breathing.

SEATTLE (AP) - Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero has been
voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North
American Soccer Reporters. Montero scored two goals to help Seattle
came from behind twice to beat the Timbers 3-2 on Sunday in
Portland. He also won player of the week awards in 2009 and 2010.
Seattle defender Jeff Parke won the award earlier this season.
