Step back… it could hit the fan.
It promises to be a contentious meeting the next time the Dunes City Council gets together. It was clear last night there were several differences of opinion regarding two competing septic tank ordinances; both of which would repeal an existing law that has been requiring an inventory and inspection of all septic systems in the city. Dunes City held public hearings on the two ordinances. Ordinance 210 would revise the current code and was submitted by the city’s Ordinance Review Committee. It was given the task of easing some of the regulatory requirements in the current code. Planning Commissioner and Ordinance Review Committee member George Burke spoke in favor, saying the current code was originally intended to govern a five year process that is coming to an end next year. A competing ordinance; labeled as number 211 was written by Councilor Duke Wells. It was openly supported by at least one other councilor and would get Dunes City out of septic regulation entirely, leaving it all to the State of Oregon and Lane County. One Councilor, Richard Koehler, stated his opposition to both ordinances. He was one of the authors of the current plan and he said it needs to be retained. Several residents testified on both sides of the issues last night. No final action was taken, Dunes City Councilors will resume hearings on both proposals next month.
One thing’s for sure… there’s a lot going on in the Florence Area tomorrow. The first ever “Power of Florence” will officially begin tomorrow morning with a pancake feed at the Methodist Church and a power walk at Florence Christian Church. From there, it will be a day of dog grooming, car washing, weed pulling and lemonade selling. Proposed earlier this year by 11-year old Kaylee Graham the Power of Florence is intended to be a day when everyone… no matter the age or physical limitation… does something for someone else. Groups and individuals have registered their events online at the Power of Florence-dot-com. It all wraps up from four to seven pm at Miller Park with the “Party in the Park” to thank all the volunteers. It’s open to everyone, and in addition to free hot dogs, will include the music of Marty Adams followed by Green Hits recording artist Frankie Hernandez from 5:30 to seven.
He hasn’t officially received his detective’s badge, but Florence Police officer Gabe Glowacki will be recognized Monday night for his work in recovering stolen property and arresting a suspect in a series of recent burglaries. Glowacki joined the department in 2007 as a patrol officer. He’ll formally assume detective duties September 1st, replacing John Brejska who retired earlier this year. Police Chief Maury Sanders will present Glowacki with his badge Monday night during the Florence City Council meeting.
Naturalists at the Cape Perpetua Scenic area will be out early for the next three days. A series of exceptionally low tides in the early morning hours means visitors to tidepools will get great access and viewing according to visitor center director Lori Robertson. She and her staff are inviting visitors to explore the intertidal zone tomorrow between eight and 11 am; then again Sunday and Monday between nine and noon.
