Fire Service Surveys due back January 30th

When the Florence City Council met in their first meeting of the year last week they reviewed a list of goals for 2010.
200 – “I think number one is to find a way to have sustainable revenue for city fire services.”

Although Mayor Phil Brubaker said all 12 goals on the list were presented equally, the fire service question will certainly receive a lot of attention in the coming year. In fact, the city has begun the year with a “Community Attitude Survey” on fire protection.
201 – “We hope to get a generous response. These are consultant, a consultant survey that was prepared and they’re saying maybe 20 percent would be terrific.”

The Mayor hopes for as much as a 50-percent return. The green surveys have been mailed to every household inside city limits. Plus, he says, there are extras available at City Hall.
202 – “I would hope that our residents read it, fill it out, respond to it. Drop it in the mail box, there’s no return postage necessary, we’ve taken care of that. So that we can get a good read of the city fire services for the decisions we have to make later this year.”

The survey is intended to gauge community understanding of the level of fire service as much as attitudes about how to pay for it. For the past ten years the city has contracted with Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. They’ve said they would like to pursue a formal annexation of the city into the district.

The Florence Boys and Girls Club is facing an uncertain future. The economy has had a negative effect on donations and fundraising over the past two years. Board President Eric Tanikawa describes the club’s current situation as being – quote – ‘crisis’ and they’ve already had to make operational cuts. Tanikawa says the group is looking at all options to keep the club open and meet the needs of the 500-plus children served each year. Volunteers are being called on to perform some of the duties previously handled by paid staff and they’re seeking cash donations to handle day to day expenses.

Each year the Western Lane Community Foundation provides grants totaling as much as $200-thousand to local arts, civic, education and medical groups in the Florence area. The grants will vary in size from a few hundred dollars to as many as several thousand depending on the organization and the project. The deadline for this year’s grant application cycle is coming up Friday afternoon. Application information can be picked up at the foundation office at 1525 12th Street or online at www.wlcfonline.com.

Officials in Tillamook County are investigating more than $50-thousand in damage done to a 120-year old lighthouse. Someone drove down a blocked maintenance road over the weekend, tearing up the grounds, then fired several gunshots into the Cape Meares Lighthouse. 15 windows were broken and the historic lenses, made in Paris, were damaged. Oregon State Police are seeking information on who may have been responsible. A $1000 reward has been posted.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SANDY, Ore. (AP) - A 27-year-old Oregon man and his 24-year-old
fiancee have been arraigned on murder by abuse charges in the
weekend death of the man's 3-year-old daughter. Donald Cockrell and
Michelle Smith did not enter pleas during yesterday's hearing in
Clackamas County Circuit Court. The Oregon state medical examiner's
office says Alexis Pounder died from physical and nutritional child
abuse. She was found dead on Saturday.

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) - A state medical examiner says the death
of a 6-year-old McMinnville girl was a suicide. The first-grader
had lost consciousness when she was discovered at her home with a
child's blanket and a belt wrapped around her neck Dec. 2. Police
say the girl's mother and three sisters were home at the time.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A man whose actions alarmed a commercial
jet pilot and cut short a flight to Hawaii last week has made his

56-year-old Joseph Hedlund Johnson of Salem with interfering with
the crew of a Hawaiian Airlines jetliner. He's due back in court
next week.

RUCH, Ore. (AP) - Two southern Oregon adults and two children
have been rescued after getting stuck in the snow and spending part
of a cold night outdoors. Authorities say the four set out about
noon Sunday to play in the snow, planning on returning in the
evening. They were reported missing when they were three hours
late.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A 3-year-old child was killed in a traffic
collision yesterday afternoon in Veneta. The Lane County sheriff's
office did not release the child's name. Deputy Fred Swank said 38-year old Stephanie Schiffgens was the driver of the car with the child. 26-year old Shea Neverick was driving another car that collided with Schiffgens vehicle. Both were taken to Sacred Heart RiverBend Hospital in Sprigfield.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The body of a missing Eugene woman was found
when her car was pulled from the Willamette River. Relatives had
reported 57-year-old Katherine Ann Jones missing on Sunday. Lane
County sheriff's deputies spotted the car in the river, and divers
helped recover it yesterday. Deputies believe alcohol may have been
a factor in the crash.

BANDON, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a 49-year-old Bandon

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A Springfield man who killed his father last
year has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Adam Clark, who

husband was abusive, and believes that's why her son shot him.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - One of three homeless people allegedly
beaten by a pair of Corvallis teenagers has changed his story.
Matthew Edwards told police he was attacked by 18-year-old Jonathan
Appelt and 19-yeard-old Robert Lee Griffin. But Benton County
prosecutors say the 18-year-old Edwards now admits the story was
fake. Griffin and Appelt remain accused of beating 55-year-old
Stephen Surdyka and 60-year-old Jonathan Leasure.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The city of Portland has asked a federal
judge to move the trial involving the death of James Chasse out of
state. The city says potential jurors have been tainted by
"inflammatory" media coverage of the homeless man's death in
police custody.

BEND, Ore. (AP) - A small dog found tied up inside a plastic
garbage bag has been adopted and will be going to its new home
today. The dog was discovered northeast of Bend by a motorist who
