Former Commissioner considering run; California Sea Lions escaping earthquakes?; A 6.5 hits NoCal; and dial 541!

Former Commissioner pondering run…

With the news two weeks ago that incumbent West Lane County Commissioner Bill Fleenor had dropped out of the race once again, supporters began looking for someone else they felt would represent their views.
215 -- "Some folks from Florence said, hey we want to talk to you about the County Commissionship. And so, I went in and I agreed to take a look at it."

That's Jerry Rust, a former Commissioner who spent five terms… 20 years in all… at Harris Hall in Eugene before stepping down from that position to mount an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1996. While it's been a decade and a half since he's been involved in county government, Rust says it appears that the major issues are still the same.
217 -- "Well you know it is interesting what comes around and it comes in cycles. I think probably the fiscal situation right now is as bad as it's ever been maybe. "

Rust has lived in the Florence area for about six years. If he opts to run, he'll be one of five who have publicly said they want the seat now held by Fleenor. Mapleton resident Fred Starr filed for the position late last week.

They began showing up on the beaches and rocks around Sea Lion Caves sometime after Thanksgiving… before that, the estimated four-thousand California Sea Lions had been a prominent fixture in San Francisco Bay.
219 -- "In 1989 the Sea Lions showed down at that pier in San Francisco, pier 39, unexpectedly and inhabited that pier for the last 20 years continuously."

Sea Lion Caves General Manager Dan Harkins said they showed up on Pier 39 immediately following the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. Some scientists are wondering if their disappearance means another quake is imminent. Whatever the reason, the sea lion migration to the Oregon Coast has generated a media storm, drawing interview requests from all over the world.
220 -- "Of course that's a big tourist attraction, it got a lot of biologists interested in what happened and then it also got the geologists interested in is this going to be something else that is going to be cataclysmic down in that area happening."

Some scientists say the most likely reason for the animals appearance in Oregon is because they’re following food.

Felt as far away as Roseburg and Central Oregon, a 6.5 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Northern California Saturday afternoon. The US Geologic Survey said it hit about 4:30 in the afternoon and was centered 27-miles west of Eureka. Scientists said it did not generate a tsunami. Four aftershocks came within 40-minutes, the largest a 3.8. Two smaller earthquakes rolled through the San Francisco Bay Area Thursday and Friday.

If you picked up the phone to make a local call yesterday or even today, chances are you're like many Oregonians that heard this:
200 – “This local call requires ten digits. It is not necessary to dial a one when calling this number. Please redial using the correct area code.”

The Oregon Public Utilities Commission made the change early last year, making it effective over the weekend, because phone companies were running out of seven digit numbers in the 541 area code. The move is in preparation for the addition of an 'overlay' code… 458… that will begin being issued sometime in the next three months.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Gov. Ted Kulongoski has sent a staff
member to Portland to try to win agreement on an I-5 bridge over
the Columbia River. Planning to replace the bridge has been under
way for years, but significant differences haven't been resolved.
Kulongoski's deputy legislative director Hans Bernard will move to
the Portland region to work on the project.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A Lane County judge has refused to trim
sentences for a woman who was convicted of arranging to have two
gang members kill a teenager who planned to testify against her
son. The sentence reductions would have applied to nonviolent
crimes that Mary Louise Thompson was convicted of in 1996. She's
also serving a 25-year sentence for aggravated murder.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown has
warned the lobbyist heading a campaign against two state tax
increases about a recent mailer that mimics official ballots. Brown
said yesterday the state didn't act when lobbyist Mark Nelson sent
similar mailers in 2002 and 2004. So, he won't be penalized for the
one he sent a few days ago.

SANDY, Ore. (AP) - A Sandy man and his fiancee have been
arrested and jailed in connection with the death of the man's
3-year-old child, whose body was found at their home on Saturday.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective Jim Strovink
says 27-year-old Donald Cockrell and 24-year-old Michelle N. Smith
were arrested last night and taken to the Clackamas County Jail.
Arraignment for the couple is scheduled for today.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) - Jury selection is set to begin today in
the trial of an Oregon City couple accused in the faith-healing
death of their son. The Oregonian reports Jeff and Marci Beagley
are charged with criminally negligent homicide for not providing
medical treatment to their 16-year-old son, Neil, who died of an
untreated urinary tract blockage in June 2008. The Beagley's
granddaughter, Ava Worthington, died three months earlier.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - It could be a while before Montana doctors
are willing to help terminally ill patients die even though the
state Supreme Court says nothing in state law prevents
physician-assisted suicide. Montana is the third state to make it
legal but has no specific laws outlining guidelines for doctors as
in Oregon and Washington.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State University has uncovered
windows at Gill Coliseum that were blocked decades ago. The
university has restored 14 large picture windows on the building's
east and west sides. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports the
windows were painted over sometime during the 1960s to block out
light.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Gov. Ted Kulongoski appointed Rebecca Duncan
to a seat on the Oregon Court of Appeals. She has worked as a
public defender the past 10 years. The Statesman Journal reports
she succeeds Walt Edmonds who retired last month. Duncan will have
to run in November for a full six-year term.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Obama administration today will
announce funding for nine projects designed to increase fuel
efficiency in heavy trucks and passenger vehicles. One of the
companies selected to receive the stimulus money is Daimler Trucks
North America of Portland. It will get nearly $40 million.

KENO, Ore. (AP) - Sheriff's deputies arrested a 19-year-old
Klamath County man accused of having sexual encounters with
underage girls - one 13, the other 15. Curtis Bernier of Keno was
lodged in the county jail on charges of rape, sodomy and giving
liquor to a minor.
