Successes in the new year; Myrtle Point mourns; hundreds of Cali tourists at Sea Lion Caves; and Oregon Basketball with a big finish.

Looking back… going forward…

Looking back at the past year, Florence City Manager BobWilloughby is happy with many of the things that came together for Florence.
205 – “Well I think some good things did happen. Some things that we’ve been trying for years to accomplish. A couple come to mind, probably at the top of the list was getting the senior center under construction.”

He noted the project is currently about five weeks ahead of schedule. Another long term goal…
206 – “Getting the first of our pedestrian crossings on highway 101 was a notable accomplishment so I think that was real progress.”

The city and O-DOT will cooperate on four or five additional similar crossings beginning in early 2010. But, Willoughby says, they can’t sit back and reflect too long.
207 – “We have some real challenges for the next few months in terms of revitalizing the economy and filling some empty storefronts and I think we’ve made some progress in several areas in that regard as well but there’s a lot more work to do, obviously.”

Willoughby says he also wants to work on strengthening relationships with Heceta Water District and Lane County in the coming year.

It’s not unusual for tourists from California to flock to Sea Lion Caves. But recently there’ve been as many as 400 of them and instead of driving up Highway 101, they’ve come by sea. They’re California Sea Lions and they usually spend this time of year off the Central California Coast. Dan Harkins at Sea Lion Caves said they’re most likely following food… cold water fish heading north into colder waters.

More than 1.7-million Oregon Voters’ Pamphlets went out in the mail this week. Most of the 92-page booklets should have already arrived at their designations. Each contains a total of 204 arguments for and against Measures 66 and 67. 66 would raise taxes on people with household incomes of $250-thousand or more. Measure 67 uses a sliding scale to raise the state’s minimum corporate tax. The deadline for registering to vote in the January 26th special election is next Tuesday… Ballots will begin to be mailed a week from today.

Residents in Myrtle Point are grieving the unexplained death of 18-year old Nick Harrison. The popular high school senior died Tuesday evening at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. Myrtle Point School District spokesperson Bruce Shull said basketball and wrestling scheduled for tomorrow at the school have been cancelled. In their place a ‘celebration of life’ in Harrison’s memory will be held at the Myrtle Point Christian Assembly at two pm.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - An 18-year-old woman has been accused of
theft after organizing a car-wash for her jailed boyfriend while

Vancouver police say Mallory Ewart raised about $500 under the
guise the car wash was in benefit of the family of Gordon
Patterson, a local teacher struck and killed by a car while he was
riding his bike. Police say Antonio E. Cellestine hit Petterson,
then drove away.
Charging documents say Ewart told Cellestine she got about $500

entered a not guilty plea in court last month.

approved a proposal to install six wind turbines on land north of
Huntington.

June 2007. He is chairman of the Baker County planning commission
and its renewable energy committee. He says the turbines could be
in place by October.
The Lime project would be the first wind farm in Baker County,
and the first such development built on BLM land in Oregon.
The $5 million wind farm is expected to produce enough
electricity to power about 800 homes.
The electricity will be sold to Idaho Power Co.
