Armed Forces Day to be observed; School roof to be parsed; 9th Street to be resurfaced; and gas prices drop

Armed Forces Day in Florence…

It was created by Congress in 1949… the Third Saturday in May of every year was set aside as Armed Forces Day, intended to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. Military branches. In Florence there will be a particular focus on Veterans. The Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum has organized an observance for the west end of Bay Street with displays of vintage military vehicles and several veteran’s groups from 11 to 3:00. Saturday evening at seven, the Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble will present a special concert at the Florence Events Center…
210 – “You know, we’ve put together some special music, including some home front world war II tunes. We’re doing the military service tunes. We’ve got a number of Sousa marches, We’re doing a lot of concert band music with a World War II and Veteran theme, just a great concert band concert.”

Tom Payn is a trumpeter with the group. He’s personally underwritten the cost of the center for the night so all money raised will go towards the museum. Organizers say they’ve already raised more than $14-hundred. Free tickets are available at several location, the suggested donation is $10.

The Siuslaw School Board will meet this evening at the Elementary School Library to hear the final recommendation of the Budget Committee on the coming year. One item not included in the budget however, but could have serious future repercussions, is the roof for the elementary school. Facilities supervisor Mark Mueller will present a report presenting several options ranging in cost from $440-thousand to $1.6-million. The Budget Committee meets at 6:30, the board immediately following.

A $200-thousand Federal Economic Stimulus project has disrupted traffic on one of the busiest arterials in Florence this week. Florence Public Works Director Mike Miller says the grinding and resurfacing of 4 ½ blocks of Ninth Street between Highway 101 and Juniper Street is expected to be complete by the end of next week. Motorists have faced detours on either end of Ninth as workers have been grinding the old pavement off and patching what Miller called ‘soft spots’. An overlay should be completed this week with striping and final details next week. Miller says the last component will be the traffic light sensors at Highway 101. They should be complete by the 21st.

Florence’s average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fell by two-cents this week to $2.84, six cents below the national average and 14-cents less than Oregon’s average price. Marie Dodds with Triple-A says crude oil prices tumbled this week, falling from a high of $87 a barrel to around $75 on Friday. Then, as of yesterday it was trading at $77.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - University of Oregon President Richard
Lariviere (lah-RIV'-ee-air) says it's time to try a new way of

Northwest waters but typically stay far out to sea.

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) - Officials in North Bend say the city will
lose almost $200,000 in the next fiscal year after the Coquille

federal trust. The city sued but a mediator ruled in favor of the
tribe.
