County Commission Candidate responds to finance…

Lane County Commission candidate Jerry Rust said he acted immediately to correct his campaign finance report when confronted with an April 28th complaint filed with the Secretary of State’s office.
210 – “I believe in these rules of reporting and we blew it on this one. As soon as we found out about it, we corrected it. As far as I know right now, we’re completely… all of our reporting is now up to date.”

But, as of yesterday, Rust still hadn’t heard about a second complaint, filed May 4th by Sandra Mattson of Eugene alleging three dozen entries were between one and 33 days late.
211 – “I’ve had a flurry of small donations and you know, you have to report every single transaction whether it’s an expenditure or it’s a received check.”

Rust said his campaign treasurer was laid up in the hospital for a time and that caused disruption in the reporting process. He said the reporting errors were just that, errors and not intentional. He also said while some people want to focus on this aspect of the political process, it’s not an avenue he’s going down.
212 – “I personally am not expending one single moment of our precious campaign time looking into other people’s, uh, things.”

Rust said the campaign finance rules are quite complex. He illustrated that by saying the Secretary of State’s office told him they have at least a one-year backlog in investigating these types of complaints.

The Siuslaw School District Budget Committee did not reach a final decision this week, that’s expected to come May 12th. Superintendent Jeff Davis said the panel heard testimony from supporters of the Metals program at the high school, including the instructor Mark Durbin. That program, along with Durbin’s job, is targeted for elimination to bring the budget into balance. Davis says there’s another capital item not under consideration…
213 – “The budget does not address our elementary roof. That might surface as a question because I do think the district and the community does have to monitor that situation. And, uh, I want to be vigilant and I know the board does to.”

Cost estimates for that roof range between $440-thousand and $1.6-million. The school board will hear a report on that Wednesday night… they’re also expected to take final action on the budget for the coming year.

Think of it as a sort of “reverse take-out”. Instead of pulling up, rolling down the window and someone handing you food, you hand it to them instead. Members of the Siuslaw Ministerial Association will be holding their annual Pastor’s Drive-By Food Drive tomorrow from nine to 11 at the Florence Events Center. Pastors, ministers and priests will be standing at the curb to receive non-perishable food donations that will make their way to the shelves of Florence Food Share.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) - A 33-year-old man accused of killing his
mother and her boyfriend near Bandon has pleaded not guilty to two
counts of aggravated murder. Gabriel Morris told a Coos County
judge yesterday that he couldn't afford a lawyer. Corvallis
attorney Peter Fahy will represent him, as will another lawyer with
death penalty experience. Morris is charged in the Feb. 8 deaths of
Robin Anstey and Robert Kennelly. Bail is set at $5 million.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a 20-year-old
Oregon State University student has reported being sexually
assaulted in a dorm room. OSP spokesman Lt. Jeff Lanz says the man
apparently walked into the dorm room on the Corvallis campus early
Tuesday. The Oregonian says detectives investigate several cases of
sexual assault on the OSU campus each year, but that Lanz says it's
very rare to have a case where the victim doesn't appear to have
any acquaintance with the attacker.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna
wants state Attorney General John Kroger to release all documents
relating to his former special counsel for environmental affairs,
who resigned last month. Brent Foster resigned after telling Kroger
he misrepresented his involvement in the investigation of water
pollution allegations against the owner of Hood River Juice.

ENTERPRISE, Ore. (AP) - Federal and Oregon state wildlife
officials say one or more wolves has killed a calf on private
property in the Zumwalt area of northeast Oregon's Wallowa County.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy
says a state wildlife employee found the dead calf Wednesday.
Agents examined tracks and bite marks to determine what happened.

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) - Two Coos Bay businessmen have bought the
century-old Chandler Hotel with plans to reopen it before the end
of summer. The World newspaper reports that Melvin Lesher and James
Tarantino plan to offer retail space and apartments. The Chandler
was built in 1909 and was a hotel until the 1980s, when it was
converted to low-income housing.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The city of Eugene is becoming a little more
modest. The city is replacing the five-year-old slogan, "The
world's greatest city for the arts and outdoors" with the more
humble "A great city for the arts and outdoors." City Community
Relations Director Jan Bohman says it's not an official change,
just a little different expression.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Former Oregon State quarterback Lyle
Moevao (MOY-vow) and two other Beavers have pleaded not guilty to
accusations they stole a golf cart that belonged to the athletic
department.
The Gazette-Times reports the black and orange cart was reported
stolen March 14. Four days later, Oregon State Police found the
cart damaged.
Charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle are the 23-year-old
Moevao, 22-year-old Brennan Olander and 21-year-old Keaton
Kristick.
Kristick, a linebacker, played four seasons at Oregon State and
recently signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
Olander is a defensive tackle on the current squad.
Moevao was 11-4 as a starter for the Beavers, but his career was
curtailed by injuries.

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) - A municipal court jury in Cottage
Grove exonerated a former high school teacher accused of groping a
teenage girl while she was drunk at a party.
The Register-Guard reports the jury deliberated about 45 minutes
Thursday before returning the verdict on a misdemeanor sex-abuse
charge.
Shane Adrian Mast testified on his own behalf during the one-day
trial. The 32-year-old Drain resident faces another trial in
November in Roseburg where he is accused of contributing to the
delinquency of a minor.
Mast taught social studies at Cottage Grove High and coached
boys basketball at North Douglas High School in Drain. He resigned
in 2008 to focus on missionary work in Africa.
