Kitzhaber stands by 'ungovernable' claim; Reedsport branch library earns grant funding; Siuslaw to compete at state auto skills again

Former Governor doesn’t back down from eight year old statement…

Former Governor John Kitzhaber is not apologizing for calling Oregon “ungovernable” when he finished his second term at the beginning of the decade. Now that he’s seeking an unprecedented third term as governor after eight years out of office, Kitzhaber is taking criticism from Republicans who are calling attention to his old comment. But, the Emergency Room Physician-turned-politician has responded by saying he believes it’s still true… and that it’s time for somebody with his experience to try and fix problems before Oregon falls into political and economic gridlock. Kitzhaber told the Associated Press in a recent interview the next two years will determine whether the state can find ways to solve its political and fiscal problems. He’s in a primary race with former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury for the Democratic nomination.

Twenty of the state’s best Auto Tech students will be competing under the hood later this week in Gresham for the honor of representing Oregon at the national finals of the Ford –Triple-A Auto Skills Competition. Jorge Loza and Josh Barton from Siuslaw High School were among the highest scorer’s in the online exam portion of the competition. Now they’ll race the clock, along with nine other teams, to fix as many intentional glitches on identical Mercury Milan vehicles as they can. Student participants are competing for prizes and scholarships. The winning team will compete in Dearborn, Michigan June 13th through the 15th.

A pair of grants with a combined total of $72-thousand will help further renovations the the Reedsport Branch of the Douglas County Library. The library received $22-thousand from the Whipple Foundation for new windows and the Ford Family Foundation granted $50-thousand for siding. That money will be used as the local match for a possible Community Development Block Grant. The City of Reedsport is sponsoring many of the grant applications for the total $350-thousand renovation project.

A U.S. Army private in Iraq with local connections received a Mother’s Day gift from a total stranger yesterday. PFC Nadja (NAW-d’ya) Warren called her parents on Mother’s Day. About 20-minutes later, her dad, Pete Warren, checked his email and spotted a message from Pay-Pal, the online payment system, crediting him back $20 for the AT&T calling card his daughter had used to make the call. A subsequent e-mail explained the credit. Shelly Reberg said the cards were her gift “for your sacrifice for your country. If you are a mother, consider it my Mother’s Day gift. If not, for your mother’s sacrifice to not be able to see you in person”. Reberg went on to explain that her sister, Lt. Holly E. Griffith, also served in Iraq and came home safely.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) - Eastern Oregon University officials say a
football player from Montana has died of injuries suffered during
the team's spring game. A spokesman says Dylan Steigers took a blow
to the head in Saturday's scrimmage. He walked off the field, but
later vomited on the sidelines, a sign of concussion. He died at a
hospital yesterday. Steigers graduated from Sentinel High School in
2006.

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - More low-income school kids could soon

District of Columbia.

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (AP) - Ex-NBA player Chris Dudley once battled
the likes of Shaquille O'Neal and David Robinson. Now he's in a
different kind of contest. The 45-year-old Republican wants to
become Oregon's next governor. Political insiders say name
recognition could be enough to lift Dudley into a general election
race against former Gov. John Kitzhaber or former secretary of
state Bill Bradbury.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Fire officials are investigating a blaze
at a century-old vacant building in northwest Portland that caused
nearly a quarter-million dollars worth of damage. Firefighters were

structure that once housed Molly Maguire's Bar and Grill. The
Oregonian reports that the blaze apparently started in the basement
of the boarded-up building. No injuries were reported.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - A 61-year-old Terrebonne man is walking on
foot across Oregon to push for higher speed limits on Oregon
highways. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports Ted Carlin began his
trek by stepping into the Pacific Ocean at Newport on May 3. He
plans to finish June 11 at the Snake River in Ontario. He'll cover
about 456 miles walking about 15 miles per day. Carlin says he's
frustrated with the 55 mph limit on state highways.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Claims that a Portland psychic scammed
$150,000 from a man by telling him that she could get rid of
"negative energy" has led to an investigation into a potential
fraud conspiracy. Portland had filed aggravated theft charges
against Cathy Stevens, but they were dropped pending more
investigation. Stevens' attorney says she's the victim of religious
persecution.

WHEELER, Ore. (AP) - A pharmacy on the Oregon coast is being
forced to close after one of its employees was arrested on drug

operated by pharmacist Jeff Collett since 1973. But federal agents

leading to the arrest of pharmacy technician Florence West.

BEND, Ore. (AP) - A Bend man faces 219 child pornography and sex
abuse charges after Bend police got a call from their Port Orford

County warrants for felon in possession of a firearm and failure to

a raid they conducted led to the additional charges.

WILLIAMS, Ore. (AP) - Josephine County sheriff's officers say a
Williams man has been killed by his own car. A deputy found Albert
Darcangelo under his car's front left tire in a roadside turnout on
Williams Highway. Investigators say the emergency brake on the car
failed and it rolled forward, knocking him over after he got out of
the car.
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) - This time, the fire came to
firefighters. A Carlton man whose truck started belching smoke
drove to the McMinnville Fire Station, where firefighters opened
the hood and found the engine ablaze. They were able to douse the
flames with a hose and have since joked about their new "drive-up
service."
