Lane County Administrator gets lukewarm assessment…

The Lane County Board of Commissioners delivered their assessment this week of the job performance by chief executive Jeff Spartz. Commission chair Bill Fleenor delivered a lukewarm verdict saying Spartz is doing a – quote – “sufficient job”. Fleenor also says the job evaluation will continue through September as the board tries to determine what they consider to be an ‘acceptable’ level of performance. Spartz has overseen the operations of the county during a turbulent financial time. He’s had to offer up potential solutions to recurring fiscal slumps. In 2008 he dealt with an 8-percent reduction in workforce. A year later he was instrumental in gaining additional staffing for the county jail that allowed lodging an extra 84 inmates despite a heated debate over what that could do to the county’s long term financial stability. Spartz did not comment directly on the evaluation. He did say his average work week is more than 50-hours… 30 of which he spends in meetings with the board. Spartz also supervises 15 department heads and is the primary budget officer for the county.

The next step in adopting updates to the Florence Parks Master Plan will begin Tuesday evening with a hearing before the Florence Planning Commission. Some components of the current plan are more than 25-years old and the city’s demographics and economic factors have changed dramatically in that time. Adopted in 1988, the current plan identified an ambitious goal of adding 30 new parks to the system, but only two have been created. A series of workshops and outreach programs contributed to the plan under consideration. The Planning Commission will hear from residents this Tuesday. The City Council is expected to review it later this summer. Residents can view it now at City Hall or online.

The fireworks season in Oregon begins June 23rd and state fire officials are saying keep it legal and keep it safe. Oregon law forbids any fireworks that fly, explode or travel more than six feet on the ground or 12-inches in the air. Bottle rockets, roman candles and firecrackers are illegal. Moreover, there are prohibitions against all fireworks at most public areas. State parks, Oregon beaches, Federal lands and, new this year, public areas in Old Town Florence are off limits to even the occasional sparkler. The fire marshal’s office licenses all retail fireworks establishments in Oregon. This year there are 765 locations that will offer them for sale between June 23rd and July 6th.
