Graduation Rites set; Florence to take up fireworks ban again; Free Camping day; Fire cuts ribbon on comm facility

Diplomas set to be delivered…

The school year is winding down and seniors at area high schools are getting ready for graduation. The last day of classes for seniors at Siuslaw and Reedsport is today, but for the 11 graduating seniors at Mapleton High School they’ve been done since last week. They’ll walk the aisle tomorrow afternoon at two pm and receive their diplomas at Mapleton High School. The graduates have invited retired elementary teacher Vern Eastburn to deliver the commencement address. Two student speakers will also be at the podium. Student Body Vice President Kevin Harry is the Valedictorian. The Salutatorian is Chad Walker. Commencement exercises at Siuslaw High School will take place a week from today. Reedsport graduates receive their diplomas on Sunday, June 13th.

The Florence City Council is set to revisit an earlier proposal to ban legal fireworks in much of the Old Town area. Councilors delayed action in April to give more time for supporters of the proposal to weigh in. The Port of Siuslaw Commission has reaffirmed their support of the matter. The Council will discuss it during their regular meeting Monday evening.

Local emergency officials will cut the ribbon this afternoon on a new communications complex that includes a 180-foot tall transmission tower and two equipment buildings. Because the facilities are several miles out of town in the Coast Range, the ceremony will be held at Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. There will be a photo tour projected on the screen in the training room at the fire station so people attending can get a sense of the accomplishment. The tower and accessories were paid for in part by $431-thousand FEMA grant, along with $109-thousand provided locally. The communications site will serve several different emergency response agencies in Western Lane County and will also connect those agencies to a statewide network. The ribbon cutting ceremony is set from three to five.

Oregon State Parks will charge no day-use fee, and camping fees at most campsites will be waived tomorrow, as part of the 13th annual State Parks Day in Oregon. There’s no charge for individual tent or rv sites at any state park, and many of them will be offering special programs to recognize the day. In Coos County, Shore Acres will be showing off the roses in bloom in the botanical garden. North of Florence at Washburne State Park staff will guide an afternoon trail walk focusing on area history, then lead an evening stroll at nearby Heceta Head Lighthouse.

Kidnapping charge against Eagle Scout dismissed

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Prosecutors have dropped a second-degree
kidnapping charge that was filed against a 23-year-old Eagle Scout
accused of trying to abduct a 2-year-old boy from a Boy Scout
family carnival near Eugene.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Patty Perlow said Thursday that
prosecutors found insufficient evidence to prove the charge at a
trial that had been scheduled for later this month.
Azoulas Yurashunas says he's an innocent man who has been
"demonized." He told police he only tried to help the boy after
seeing him accidentally hit his head on a sign.
Defense lawyer Joe Metcalfe says police knew all the facts the
day of the arrest "and they didn't have a case from day one."
Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin says police acted
appropriately.
