Two sought after weekend shooting south of Florence; Medicare checks bring out the scammers; School board to take final action on deficit.

Woman shot, man injured, two more sought for questioning…

A 27-year old woman suffered a shotgun wound to her abdomen and Oregon State Police are seeking two people for questioning following an altercation that also injured a 26-year old man south of Florence early Sunday morning. Lieutenant Gregg Hastings said the names of the two injured have not been released out of interest for their safety. The man and woman, along with a young child were at a residence on Green Gate Road, just off Canary Road south of Florence late Saturday night. Hastings said an argument ensued resulting in the woman being shot and the man struck in the head with tht shotgun about one AM Sunday. The man drove the injured woman and the child to a nearby gas station where he called 9-1-1. Troopers, assisted by Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies surrounded the home and when they gained entry just before six AM found it unoccupied. They’re seeking 46-year old Victor Glen Caron and his girlfriend, 40-year old Tanya Mintey. The two are possibly driving a dark blue 2000 Dodge Durango sport utility and are known to have connections in Nevada and Northern California. The injured woman was transported yesterday to Sacred Heart Riverbend with serious injuries.

The results of votes by two school employee unions are expected to be released and Siuslaw School Board members will then take final action tonight on a list of five options dealing with a $504-thousand revenue shortfall for the coming year. The board meets in a special session at 5:30 this evening at District Offices on Oak Street. The shortfall is Siuslaw’s share of a statewide $577-million deficit expected because of still-lagging income tax collections. Board members could shorten the school year by 4-days next year and forego filling two vacancies created by retirements. If employees don’t agree to the reductions, there could be three additional teaching positions lost due to layoff.

Many Medicare recipients will be getting a special $250 rebate check and Oregon’s Attorney General says watch out for the scam artists who are already lining up to take advantage of the situation. A-G John Kroger says scammers are spreading misinformation about the payment, intended to help fill a part of the gap created by the so-called ‘doughnut hole’ in Part D coverage. Kroger says seniors eligible for the payment don’t have to do anything, they’ll receive the payment automatically. There are no special forms to fill out, it’s not taxable income and seniors need to be cautious about providing personal information to anyone saying it’s needed to get the money.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Ten days after a 7-year-old Portland boy
disappeared, Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton says the search
has been reclassified as a criminal investigation. Until now, Kyron
Horman has been considered a "missing endangered child," a
designation that spans a range of possibilities including that a
lost minor is in danger. Staton also said yesterday a $25,000
reward is offered for information that leads to Kyron.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Overcrowding at Oregon's prison for women at
Wilsonville has spurred a decision to reopen a women's facility at
Salem. The Coffee Creek prison is packed with nearly 1,150 inmates,
forcing double-bunking of inmates and the use of nearly 60
makeshift beds. Officials plan to shift some inmates to Salem in a
fenced compound that formerly was the Oregon Women's Correctional
Center.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Vehicle registrations in Oregon have
fallen by the largest amount in recent state history last year. The
Oregonian reports that nearly every county saw decreases, with more
than 32,000 fewer registered passenger vehicles statewide in 2009
than in 2008. State officials say the drop probably is due to the
bad economy, as people buy fewer new cars and don't renew tabs for
some old ones.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - A 76-year-old Waldport man who says a
10-inch wire was left in his chest after heart surgery is suing
Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, a surgeon and a physician's
assistant. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that Ben Sebastiani
is seeking $20,000 in economic damages and $250,000 for pain and
suffering, plus legal fees. The hospital had no comment on the
lawsuit.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Transportation Department says
about 20 gallons of sodium hydroxide - caustic soda - spilled when
a vehicle overturned on northbound Interstate 5 in Albany. Traffic
was restricted early this morning for a hazmat cleanup. There were
no injuries.

DIAMOND LAKE, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police have cited a
Redmond-area man after a jet sled knocked a 62-year-old woman off a
dock and into Diamond Lake. Police say Colleen Savage of Salem was
walking on the dock Saturday afternoon when the craft jumped onto
the dock and struck her. Later police arrested the 30-year-old man
who was operating the jet sled.

DEPOE BAY, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a man pulled from
the water in Depoe Bay on the coast has died. The roommate of
Dennis Keith Brockus says he apparently fell into the water after
climbing onto a rocky outcropping to retrieve a kite. He was
unresponsive when the Coast Guard pulled him from the water and was
pronounced dead at a Lincoln City hospital on Friday.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Eugene residents will soon be able to sweep
away fines from traffic tickets or misdemeanors by doing some work
for the city. Some of the jobs include removing litter from
downtown sidewalks and eliminating graffiti. The program starts in
about a week.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Heavy spring rain has forced the
Bonneville Power Administration to give away some surplus
hydropower, reduce generation at other power plants and fill
reservoirs for migrating fish. The late rain has challenged BPA
managers, who were issuing warnings about summer water shortages
just a month ago.

EUGENE (AP) – Texas A&M won both the women’s and men’s team titles at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the second straight year. The women were boosted by a 1-2 finish in the 200 meters to the disappointment of the home crowd of 12,800 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene. Oregon’s women finished second… the men third.
