Siuslaw Schools looking at cutting 4 days; grads to get diplomas; Forest road facing renovation; Airport gets fed grant

Siuslaw looking at pay cuts and staff reductions…

Five options on dealing with a half-million-dollar revenue shortfall for the coming year are under consideration by the Siuslaw School Board. All of them involve staff reductions, two of them shorten the school year. Superintendent Jeff Davis says his preferred alternative is to clip four days off the end of next year, and forego filling two vacancies created by staff retirements. Those moves along with a $224-thousand reduction in the amount of money to be set aside for future retirements would be enough to offset the latest shortfall, Siuslaw’s share of a statewide $577-million deficit. Option two would mean the loss of only two days, but would cost one additional job. Both would require approval of teachers and support staff who would have to agree to changes in their contracts reducing their pay. If that doesn’t come, Davis says the other three alternatives could eliminate up to three current positions plus the two retirements. This latest round of cuts will be on top of reductions already taken during the budget process that saw the elimination of the high school metals program and one-and-a-half teaching positions. The school board will meet Monday evening to hear from employees and consider their options.

153 area high school graduates will get their diplomas this weekend. 101 will walk the aisle tonight at Siuslaw High School during the 8:00 commencement. Hannah Hodulik and McKenna Holmes are class Valedictorians; Morgan Siegel is Salutatorian. In Reedsport the Valedictorian is Duncan Law; the Salutatorian Kayla Monroe. They and the 49 other grads will receive their diplomas at two pm Sunday afternoon.

A key forest road between Mapleton and Highway 101 south will be closed for six weeks beginning Monday. Reconstruction work on the 24-hundred road linking Sweet Creek road to Canary will begin June 14th and run through July 31st. Central Coast District Ranger Pam Gardner says the forest service road will be open on weekends between five pm Fridays and six am Mondays during the project. Gardner says the only alternative route is Highway 126 to 101 South. The project will repair and replace road beds, pavement and culverts and is funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

A federal grant from the Department of Transportation will fund preliminary work at the Florence Municipal Airport that will see completion of the perimeter security fence and expand the airport’s main apron. A $109-thousand grant was announced yesterday by U.S. Senator Ron Wyden’s office.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A National Guard helicopter and searchers
on horses have joined about 125 volunteers slogging through the
rain-soaked brush and steep woods around a Portland school where a
7-year-old boy vanished nearly a week ago. Authorities reported no
results yesterday in their search and investigation into the
disappearance of second-grader Kyron Horman, who was last seen on
June 4 at Skyline Elementary School.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A former Reynolds High School girls
basketball coach accused of having sex with a 17-year-old player
has pleaded not guilty to six counts of second-degree sexual abuse.
Twenty-six-year-old Dorian Rudolph Gibson entered his pleas
yesterday in Multnomah County Circuit Court. The Oregonian reports
the case is among the first brought under a new state law that
enhances penalties for coaches who sexually abuse athletes. Police
say the sex is considered nonconsensual since the player is younger
than 18 and the coach is older than 21.

RILEY, Ore. (AP) - State Police say a man is dead after his
motorcycle left U.S. 395 in Eastern Oregon and crashed into a
ditch, hitting several boulders. The man was not identified pending
notification of relatives. Lt. Gregg Hastings says a group of
motorcyclists was spread out over a couple of miles as they rode
north on the highway to a rally in Halfway.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - The general manager of a Costco scheduled
to open near Roseburg this summer says the store has received about
3,000 applications for 100 jobs. A spokesman says the rest of the
staff will arrive via transfers or promotions from within the
Costco system. Job applications are still being accepted.
Interviews begin June 21.

MOLALLA, Ore. (AP) - Maple Grove Elementary school in Molalla
has been a tradition in Claire Ferlan's family for most of the past
century. All nine of her brothers and sisters attended. So did her
husband and all of their 10 children. So did her father-in-law, who
also drove the school bus. That tradition ended yesterday --
district officials say they can no longer justify operating such a
remote school that serves so few students.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) - The Pac-10 conference says Colorado
has accepted an invitation to become the league's 11th member.
The conference announced its first expansion since adding
Arizona and Arizona State in 1978 on Thursday. More teams could
follow Colorado from the Big 12 to the Pac-10. Reports say Texas,
Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State could accept
invitations soon.
Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott announced in February that the
conference was exploring possible expansion. He was given the
authority last weekend from the schools to offer invitations to
potential new members.
