Florence Council resumes fireworks ban discussion; Read for the need plants seeds in fertile soil; Boys and Girls Club benefits from golf tourney

Second Reading for Fireworks Ban on Agenda Tonight…

The Florence City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance banning the use of all fireworks… legal and illegal… in most of Old Town in March, then delayed the second reading April 5th to give supporters of the move time to provide input. Up until that time most of the input had been in opposition. Since then there have been several letters, emails and notes submitted for the record, some opposed, but more in favor. Roxy Nivens lives on First Street, across from the Port of Siuslaw parking lot. She opposes the ban saying it was – quote – “an unfair attempt by a few to dictate how we celebrate in a legal and appropriate manner”. Those in support of the ban cited a variety of reasons. Ron Hogeland is an owner of commercial property in Old Town. He voiced concern for the safety of people as well as the many wooden buildings that may be at risk. Hogeland admitted he found the extension of the ban to surrounding private property as being a “grey area” and saw no problem with private residents using legal fireworks on non-commercial property. The council will take up the second reading of the ordinance tonight.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County capitalized on the weather and what appeared to be a pent-up demand for a day in the sunshine. The organization raised more than $22-thousand Saturday in the “fore-kids” golf tournament. Volunteer club director Cindy Cable expressed her delight in the totals. 120-golfers hit the course… donated for the day by Sandpines Golf… and several more attended an afternoon barbecue to wrap up the day.

$5,100 was raised for Food For Lane County during Saturday’s “Read for the Need” book sale. Started by Florence Middle Schooler Taylor Graham four years ago, the sale moved this year to Prairie Mountain Elementary School in West Eugene. Graham’s mom, Shannon Graham said Taylor was concerned that the total wasn’t as much as in previous years but said the success came from her son’s inspiration of 90 fifth graders who rallied to mount a book drive and then ultimately the sale. Graham says she believes they “planted seeds into fertile soil” that will prompt others to get involved, volunteer and create other programs that will help even more people.

The Florence Urban Renewal Agency will be meeting Wednesday evening to consider 14 grant applications for the Preservation and Rehabilitation Program. The total amount of grant funding requested is just over $65-thousand that would go towards improving the exterior appearances of several buildings. Projects include scraping and painting several buildings; new signs and awnings; several landscaping projects; and repairs to concrete sidewalks.

Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Detectives have begun interviewing parents
and students of Skyline Elementary School as the search goes on for
a missing 7-year-old boy. The Oregonian reports that parents and
classmates of second-grader Kyron Horman met with authorities
yesterday. Kyron disappeared Friday morning near his school in
northwest Portland. His stepmother reported last seeing him walk
down a hallway toward his classroom.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Marion County firefighters have rescued a
74-year-old woman who was trapped in her burning home. The
Statesman Journal says the woman's daughter reported the fire at
about 12:10 a.m. yesterday and alerted Marion County emergency
responders that her mother was inside the house. Firefighters
rushed in and pulled her from the home. Both women were taken to
Salem Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A jury has sided with Lane County in a
dispute over funding being cut off to a Springfield mental health
agency. The Lane County Circuit Court jury determined that the
county did not improperly break its contract with SAFE Inc., a
nonprofit agency that operated Valia Health Resources -- which
treats the mentally ill. SAFE sued last year after county officials
announced they would discontinue the agency's Medicaid coverage.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - The Linn Benton Lincoln Education Service
District has approved layoffs if necessary to plug a $700,000 hole
in their 2010-11 budget. The budget shortfall is the district's
share of a 9 percent spending cut ordered by Gov. Ted Kulongoski
(koo-luhn-GAH'-skee). There are 245 full-time-equivalent employees
in the district.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Even as companies close in the struggling
economy, an Oregon program that pays workers wages lost from
shuttered employers is not seeing an increase in demand. Officials
think it's because not many people know about the program. The
state provides a maximum of $4,000 in wages. The balance in the
Wage Security Fund is more than $2.3 million.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - The grand opening of the Oregon Film Museum
in Astoria attracted "Goonies" fans from all over. Over 100
Goonies fans were at the opening Saturday morning -- the 25th
anniversary of the film. Instead of a typical ribbon-cutting
ceremony, Clatsop County Historical Society executive director Mac
Burns had the ribbon cutters lined up with the clappers used in
filming that signal "Action!"

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Medical Board has fined four
Eugene heart surgeons for allegedly overbiling Medicare. The
doctors agreed to each pay a $10,000 fine and serve 100 hours of
community service. At issue is the way the surgeons helped one
another before, during and after surgeries, and how they billed
federal agencies.

REDMOND, Ore. (AP) - The Redmond School District will end the
school year three days early after two unions representing district
staff approved about $2.6 million in budget cuts. The move is
designed to overcome a multimillion-dollar deficit resulting from
across-the-board cuts recently announced by the state.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The FBI has joined in the search for a
7-year-old boy last seen walking toward his classroom at a Portland
school Friday morning. Police say the boy's stepmother reported
last seeing him. School staff say he didn't make it to class.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say an intoxicated
man led troopers on a chase that ended Friday when he crashed into
a parked state patrol car in Springfield. Police say John Tejeda
fled from a trooper who had stopped him for traffic violations. He
was treated for minor injuries after the crash.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Sarah Palin helped boost fundraising for
Oregon Republicans by more than $250,000 with her appearance in
Eugene in April. The April 23 speech was also a bargain for $35,000
- less than half the standard fee Palin has been reported to charge
for West Coast appearances.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The State Board of Higher Education has
raised tuition and fees at Oregon's seven state universities. At
the biggest schools - Portland State, Oregon State and Oregon - the
charges will increase by 6 percent. Other schools will see
increases between 2.6 and 8.8 percent.
